History: After drawing Thor and his allies to Hell, Mephisto summoned his Legion of the Lost and sent them against Thor. Despite the large number of soldiers and/or warriors servings under each member, and the weapons of war they used, Thor defeated them all, though it did take him "hours." When the sounds of battle ceased, Mephisto assumed his warriors had triumphed, and was most surprised when Thor burst into his chambers and confronted him anew.

None of the character's are identified by name, but many of them are very recognizable.
I've contacted Gerry Conway in the past, and he was very nice, but didn't have further details to supply on 30 year old! plots (understandable).
If anyone wants to give it a whirl, asking Gerry Conway (or maybe Roy Thomas). John Buscema died several years ago.

Ghenghis Khan: Seems to be a pretty strong consensus on this one
    ancestor of the Mandarin, legacy claimed by the Yellow Claw and Doctor Fu Manchu as well per Agents of Atlas, also appeared in Amazing High Adventure#2, faced the Human Meteor and Tommy Tyme.
    It would be interesting if this was Khengor or Black Khengor from the Hyborian Age, though

I believe the pirate was Blackbeard; the rest were probably generic badguys drawn up by John from a general suggestion, ie: Let's see Hitler, Genghis Khan, Backbeard, Attila the Hun, and some other nasty historical villains. You get the idea.

• Blackbeard never wore an eye patch as shown on the art. (Although I think John Buscema probably intended the character to be Blackbeard).Blackbeard could be replaced with my own Boute-Feu (see Captain Tyger entry) -- he didn't have a patch either, but at least we free to suppose he acquired one later, unlike the real-life Blackbeard.
  Come to think of it, when the Thing impersonated Blackbeard in FF#5 he also wore a patch (what is it with Marvel and eye patches?) so maybe the real Blackbeard wore a patch in the Marvel U! I give up! :-)
  Anyway, Blackbeard is my final vote.

• Maybe Buscema didn't do proper historical research. That was the problem; I was trying to guess creator intent.
  Any easy explanation is that perhaps in Mephisto's Hell, there is a sort of Valhalla arrangement, where these fellows fight each other constantly, with simulated "injuries" occurring that are later "healed".
  Eyepatch aside, I guess that was supposed to be Blackbeard. If not, I got a list of pirates including Lepanto, Pierre Legrand, Jean-David Nau, Henry Morgan, William Fly, and Henry Every.

• Also of note, the pirate may or may not be Blackbeard because in the image he appears to have ribbons in his beard. The real Blackbeard wore gunpowder fuses that he would light up during a fight to instill fear in his enemies (maybe the ribbons held the fuses after all).

  It would be interesting if this was one of the Nordheimr Aesir or Vanir of the Hyborian Age.

• The Viking may not be a Viking but somebody else such as the famous Gaul leader, Vercingtorix, maybe even some other Celtic leaders. Two come to mind, Bolgius and Brennus who sacked Rome.

Attila the Hun met Tommy Tyme, was opposed by Torgo, appeared in Eternals Annual#1, appeared in a Destroyer story

    The Horror Handbook 2005 notes that Tom Malverne went to Hell.

• Tamerlane raises an interesting issue: while a bloody conqueror, he is still revered in his part of the world and children are still named after him. He wasn't any more awful than Richard the Lionheart or the French Crusader Kings.

• Actually, Tamerlane was largely a guess because of the Edgar Allan Poe poem; I had thought it might be Saladin. I guess it would be in Gerry Conway's mind, as he seems somewhat well-versed in prose horror (notice his occasional references to Lovecraft in his writing). I had alternately suggested one of Dracula's Ottoman enemies, since Conway has written Dracula. Again, I was guessing that Saladin would might be a choice because Conway might not have done much historical research for this.

  Since this issue came out before Claremont introduced his version of the Hellfire Club, I am guessing this was probably supposed to represent Sir Francis Dashwood, and not Sir Patrick Clemens.

• The Marquis de Sade's wig, costume etc. would look completely different from what is depicted; The man on the picture looks more like someone contemporary with Jane Austen's Mister Darcy rather than someone from 1800s France.
  The Mr. Darcy-lookalike could be one of the founders of the Hellfire Club (the fictional Marvel version). Very appropriate. And he's definitely holding a dueling sword.

• That is why I also suggested somebody from the Hellfire Club such as Sir Francis Dashwood (since this is Earth-616, I would suggest Sir Patrick Clemens if this ever gets addressed in a Handbook). I would have suggested Dorian Gray from the Oscar Wilde novel, but I did not think that the writer was bringing in *fictional* rogues. However, as you suggest, we should probably remove the marquis as a consideration.

• I thought that this could be Rasputin, but he never had a hook-hand either, to my knowledge, which kind of limits possibilities. I was mainly considering "evil guy with beard"... if it weren't for the hook, I guess he could also be Judas Iscariot.

• The guy with the long-knife and hook (and it looks to me as his right-hand is missing, not that he is holding a hook) can't be a Spanish Inquisitor -- the costume, the methods of torture, etc. everything argues against it. Has anyone considered he might be Captain James Hook? In the Disney animated version the hook was on his left arm, but in the Spielberg live action, it was on his right arm. I'm too lazy to dig up James Barrie's version and check if Barrie specifies which hand the crocodile ate.

    I find it hard to accept some of the hypothetical identities suggest by John. I don't mean to be politically correct, but depicting General Sherman or Ulysses Grant in Hell might raise questions in this country, and I think we should similarly respect other cultures' historical figures.I know it's a fine line from, say, Hitler (universally reviled) to Attila, to Genghis Khan, to Tamerlane, to Napoleon, but still. A Russian will easily place Napoleon in Hell; a Frenchman not likely.One of the nice things about Marv Wolfman's Dracula is that Marv never forgot Drac's nobility and national pride and valorous deeds. He wasn't one of Hell's minions. I don't have any particular alternatives to offer; but I thought I would  register my problem with the entry as it stands presently.

    It is too bad that none of the State Shinto Militarists such as Tojo ever make these cameos in Hell, as much of Japanese society at least does not actively support these malcontents today, but are rather indifferent to them (especially now, with China and other countries bringing up Unit 731, the Comfort Women, et al.)
I think the most neutral thing to do if this is ever officialized in say a Handbook is declare some of these people to be figures from the Hyborian Age such as Yezdigerd, Yildiz, Khengor, Black Khengor, and so forth. Joe May (Spidermay) put together a list of Hyborian Era kings.

    One wonders why historical figures who weren't Christians (like Genghis Khan etc.) are in Mephisto's Hell -- if Nero or Caligula are in Pluto's Hades, say, why would Attila or Genghis Khan be in Mephisto's realm?
I like the idea of using fictional characters as opposed to historical  ones, but I'm not inflexible (rules are meant to be broken after all).
Leaving that aside, replacing "Genghis Khan/Mongol guy" by Yezdizgerd, for example, "Attila/guy with stone axe" by one of the Leader of the Killer Folk who plagued Moon-Boy (like Seven Scars?) and "Tamerlane/guy with spear" with one of the first Black Knight enemies (not Mordred who's still floating around, or is he?)

    I am glad that Vlad the Impaler has never made quick cameos in anybody's trip to the various Hell dimensions, otherwise we would have to justify his presence. We already have not one but two appearances of an apparent Adolf Hitler (Hell's Angel#2 and Thor I#205) that took place while
he was either the Hate-Monger or stuck in the Cosmic Cube.

    I'd suggest that it could be that Mephisto just re-shaped a bunch of demons into the appearance of characters thought to be evil by a US-centric mind...but most of the characters present there were Asgardians, and Thor was the only one doing the fighting. That being said, I have zero interest in being politically correct but rather trying to report the original writer's intentions. I've e-mailed Gerry Conway to see if he can shed any light on the subject. John Buscema died several years ago, IIRC. Perhaps Roy Thomas might have some insight to this? He was editor, after all. JML...care to run it past him?
