MOBILE FALLOUT SHELTER
Classification: Terrestrial technology
Creator: SHIELD technicians
User/Possessors: SHIELD emergency responders
First Appearance: Strange Tales I#144/1 (May, 1966)
Powers/Abilities/Functions: The exact specifications of the Mobile Fallout Shelter are unknown, but presumably it could withstand the effects of an atomic explosion. It could hold at least ten occupants, and it was probably stocked with enough food, water, and supplies to last the two weeks necessary for radioactive fallout to decay to safe levels following a nuclear detonation.
History:
(Strange Tales I#143/1) - The Druid sent a flying Satan's Egg to destroy a SHIELD aircraft which was equipped with a new type of atomic reactor -- the crew survived by ejecting in time, but the plane crashed.
(Strange Tales I#144/1 (fb) - BTS) - Emergency responders and equipment were dispatched to the scene of the plane crash, including the Mobile Fallout Shelter.
(Strange Tales I#144/1) - The emergency team was working to get the fire under control as Nick Fury went into the plane wreckage to shut down the reactor before it exploded. With only seconds remaining until the reactor overloaded, and seeing the situation as dire, the rest of the emergency team had no choice but to take refuge in the Mobile Fallout Shelter, but Dum-Dum Dugan refused and stayed outside to wait for Fury. Fury successfully shut down the reactor before it exploded and thus averted a disaster.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Howard Purcell.
I gotta wonder -- considering the size of the Mobile Fallout Shelter, how did they ever get something that big out to the crash site so fast? (...and I don't even want to think about what kind of mileage it gets.)
