History:

(X-Men I#63 (fb) - BTS) - Using untapped radiations in the Savage Land, Magneto built a machine and turned several of the local indigenous people there into super-powered Mutates (Amphibius, Barbarus, Brainchild, Equilibrius, Gaza, Lupo, Piper) who were loyal to him.

(X-Men I#62) - Magneto captured the Angel (Warren Worthington) and briefly convinced him that the Mutates were a misunderstood minority like the X-Men. The Mutates continued working for Magneto, capturing natives and helping him amass power. Equilibrius and Piper came to blows with the X-Men and Ka-Zar.

(X-Men I#63) - The Mutates fought Ka-Zar and the X-Men as Magneto and Brainchild saw Lorelei created. The X-Men attacked and the male members were put under Lorelei's spell, but Marvel Girl managed to defeat Magneto and the Mutates were devolved.

(Avengers I#110 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto returned to the Savage Land and restored the Mutates' powers to them, though they had no memory of him doing this.

(Avengers I#105 (fb) - BTS) - The Mutates now calling themselves the Beast Brood (Amphibius, Barbarus, Brainchild, Equilibrius, Gaza, Lorelei, Lupo) kidnapped some scientists from South America and returned them to the Savage Land. They hoped to use the scientists to create more Mutates, eventually planning to rule the world.

(Avengers I#105) - The Avengers (Hawkeye (Clint Barton), Iron Man (Tony Stark), Scarlet Witch, Thor, Vision), Black Panther (T'Challa), and Sif came to the Savage Land and defeated the Mutates, freeing the scientists.

(Marvel Fanfare I#1 (fb) - BTS) - The Mutates (Amphibius, Barbarus, Brainchild, Gaza, Vertigo) took over Garokk's abandoned citadel and followers. With the goal of ruling the Savage Land, Brainchild restored the genetic transformer that Magneto had used to power the Mutates and created the mutate Vertigo.

(Marvel Fanfare I#1) - Angel (Warren Worthington), Spider-Man (Peter Parker), and Tanya Anderssen, who were in the Savage Land looking for Karl Lykos (the alter ego of Sauron) were captured by the Mutates and devolved.

(Marvel Fanfare I#2) - The devolved heroes joined the Mutates in attacking the Fall People, but Ka-Zar and Lykos attacked and destroyed Brainchild's machine. Lykos returned the heroes to their natural states by draining the machine's energies from them.

(Marvel Fanfare I#3 (fb) - BTS) - Sauron allied with Zaladane and the Mutates (Amphibius, Barbarus, Brainchild, Gaza, Timberius, Vertigo) and built a large citadel, which sapped the will of anyone else who approached it, in the Savage Land, and they planned to rule the Savage Land together. Brainchild constructed another machine, calling this one his mutant energy accelerator.

(Marvel Fanfare I#3) - The X-Men (Angel, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Storm, Wolverine) attacked the Mutates and defeated them, but Sauron saw all but the Angel captured and devolved in Brainchild's machine.

(Marvel Fanfare I#4 (fb) - BTS) - Tanya and Shanna the She-Devil were captured, devolved, and imprisoned.

(Marvel Fanfare I#4) - Ka-Zar Zabu defeated Zaladane, freed the X-Men, and quickly apprehended the rest of the Mutates. After defeating Sauron, they used the accelerator to devolve all the Mutates to their original states, then destroyed the machine.

(Uncanny X-Men Annual I#12) - With Zaladane at their head, the Mutates (Amphibius, Barbarus, Brainchild, Gaza, Lupo) joined forces with the High Evolutionary as he restored the recently devastated Savage Land. He departed immediately after and the Mutates and Zaladane plotted to seek their own power.

(Uncanny X-Men I#249 (fb) - BTS) - Brainchild created new mutates Whiteout and Worm. Worm placed many under his power, giving Zaladane an army.

(Uncanny X-Men I#249) - Zaladane led the Mutates to Chile to capture Polaris. While there, they battled the X-Men (Colossus, Dazzler, Havok, Psylocke).

(Uncanny X-Men I#250) - Zaladane stole Polaris' powers and had Havok captured. The X-Men attacked and liberated their teammates, defeating the Mutates and Zaladane and destroying their base.

(Uncanny X-Men I#274 (fb) - BTS) - Zaladane began amassing power across the Savage Land. She took over the High Evolutionary's former base, took control of the Savage Land Mutates (Amphibius, Barbarus, Brainchild, Gaza, Lupo, Worm). Worm amassed another army for her. She made it so all technology not used by her was defective in the Savage Land, rendering a SHIELD transport (including Nick Fury) was stranded there.

(Uncanny X-Men I#274) - The Mutates captured a weakened Magneto for Zaladane, though several of them were defeated by he and a powerless Rogue.

(Uncanny X-Men I#275) - Zaladane tried draining Magneto's powers, but he escaped and murdered Zaladane. Rogue (with her powers back), Ka-Zar, and Fury defeated the rest of the Mutates and destroyed their base again.

(Wolverine II#69 (fb) - BTS) - Sauron took control of the Mutates (Amphibius, Barbarus, Brainchild, Equilibrius, Gaza) and amassed an army. They worked to capture all of the Fall People for Sauron to drain their life forces.

(Wolverine II#69-71) - Wolverine, Rogue, and Jubilee attacked Sauron and the Mutates. Sauron and Wolverine engaged in a deadly battle that Wolverine eventually won. Sauron hypnotically convinced the heroes to leave peacefully.

(X-Men Unlimited I#6 (fb) - BTS) - Still in control of the Mutates (Barbarus, Brainchild, Gaza, Lupo, Whiteout, Worm) and growing more mentally unstable, Sauron sought a stable energy source for his hunger. He ordered Whiteout and Worm to capture Havok and return him to the Savage Land.

(X-Men Unlimited I#6) - Whiteout and Worm returned with Havok, who was pursued by his teammates Cyclops, Phoenix (Jean Grey), and Polaris. Sauron drained the life from Tuval, the last of the Mutates' captives, and started going mad, causing many of the Mutates to question him. Though the X-Men were briefly defeated, they quickly overpowered Sauron, who was left a mindless beast. Brainchild took over the Mutates and the X-Men departed.

(X-Treme X-Men: Savage Land#1 (fb) - BTS) - Brainchild created two more Mutates, Leash and Lupa. The Mutates (Amphibius, Barbarus, Gaza, Leash, Lupa, Vertigo, Whiteout) plotted to get revenge on the X-Men (Beast (Henry McCoy), Bishop, Rogue, Sage, Storm, Thunderbird (Neal Shaara)), luring many of them to the Savage Land, and to gain as much power as possible.

(X-Treme X-Men: Savage Land#1) - Brainchild monitored a group of X-Men (Beast (Henry McCoy), Bishop, Rogue, Sage, Storm, Thunderbird (Neal Shaara)) aiding the race of Saurids (including C'rel and Khadar) through an underground trench into the Savage Land. Seeking revenge on the mutants, he flooded the tunnel, allowing the ocean to break through.

(X-Treme X-Men: Savage Land#2) - The X-Men and Saurids made it into the Savage Land, though many of them were wounded and scattered. Brainchild found Storm and began experimenting on her. Lupa used her powers on Beast and began controlling him, taking him back to Delage's city.

(X-Treme X-Men: Savage Land#3) - Brainchild turned Storm into a primal version of herself and unleashed her on the Savage Land.

(X-Treme X-Men: Savage Land#4) - The Mutates attacked the X-Men, the Saurids, and the united tribes. After a deadly battle, the Mutates were defeated and placed into custody.

(Uncanny X-Men I#458 - BTS) - When the Savage Land was overrun by the other-dimensional Hauk'ka (sentient evolved dinosaurs), the Mutates (Amphibius, Barbarus, Brainchild, Gaza, Leash, Lupo, Vertigo, Whiteout) were freed and offered pardons in return for their help against the Hauk'ka. They allied with Ka-Zar and Zabu as well.

(Uncanny X-Men I#457 - BTS) - They then met Psylocke and X-23 of the X-Men and joined forces.

(Uncanny X-Men I#457) - Psylocke and X-23 lead their new allies to recently freed captives Bishop, Nightcrawler, and several humans and Saurids (including Jimi, M'kai, S'gur, and Viri). They fought off R'chel (the transformed Marvel Girl) and Ma'sa'no of the Hauk'ka.

(Uncanny X-Men I#458) - The X-Men reluctantly agreed to ally with the Mutates and they engaged in a savage battle against the Hauk'ka. The Hauk'ka turned Storm into a primal version of herself again, and a dangerously powerful weather system struck the Savage Land.

(Uncanny X-Men I#459) - In the heat of the battle, Brainchild tried taking control of Storm's genome, betraying his temporary allies, but X-23 stopped him. The Hauk'ka were soon defeated.

(New Avengers I#5 (fb) - BTS) - The Mutates (Amphibius, Barbarus, Brainchild, Lupo, Vertigo, Whiteout, Worm) tried hiring the Scorcher to break Lykos out of jail, but he refused. They weren't aware that Scorcher notified Wolverine about this contact.

(New Avengers I#1) - Elektra (a Skrull) and the Hand hired Electro to break Lykos out of prison, instructing him to do so as soon as possible. They paid him half the cash then, and promised to send the other half after it was done. He later shut down all power at the Raft, allowing all the super villains there out of their cells.

(New Avengers I#2 - BTS) - In the chaos of the breakout, Lykos slipped quietly away and returned to the Mutates.

(New Avengers I#4 - BTS) - The New Avengers (Luke Cage, Captain America (Steve Rogers), Iron Man (Tony Stark), Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew)) thought the Mutates were behind the breakout. (Spider-Man claimed to have fought Sauron before). To apprehend Lykos, they traveled to the Savage Land, where Wolverine was also.

(New Avengers I#5) - The Mutates captured the Avengers, who swiftly escaped and defeated the villains. Sauron was turned back over to SHIELD.

(Sentinel Squad O*N*E#4 (fb) - BTS) - Brainchild had the Mutates build a new complex, and he began experimenting on Tyrannosaurs, increasing their brain size, ferocity, size, and strength, and he gave each a harness that gave the dinosaur telekinetic powers and lasers. Though initially planning on taking over the Savage Land, he altered his plans to include world domination.

(Sentinel Squad O*N*E#1 - BTS) - A group of Sentinels from the Office of National Emergency was contacted to investigate the happenings in the Savage Land.

(Sentinel Squad O*N*E#3 (fb) - BTS) - The Sentinels, including Randall Nixon, were destroyed by the Tyrannosaurs.

(Sentinel Squad O*N*E#3) - Brainchild, Barbarus, and Amphibius recovered two of the Sentinel pilots who were still living, James Rhodes and Tracy Skylark. Several more Sentinels, piloted by Alexander Lexington, Emil Winston, Nathaniel Briggs, Jake Slayton, Meld, and Rajani Dhama, attacked.

(Sentinel Squad O*N*E#4) - While the unpiloted Sentinel robots distracted the dinosaurs, Lexington and Meld snuck into the Mutates' lair. They freed their allies, defeated the Mutates, and destroyed the headquarters.

(Cable & Deadpool#49 (fb) – BTS) – Brianchild led the Mutates (Amphibius, Barbarus, Lorelei, Piper) in taking over Magneto’s old base. From there, he planned to use the technology to disrupt electrical signals all over the world and expand the Savage Land’s prehistoric dominion. Deadpool captured Shanna, had Lorelei subvert Ka-Zar’s will, and had Piper surround the base with dinosaurs and take over Zabu.

(Cable & Deadpool#49) – Deadpool and his allies Weasel and Bob the Hydra agent stormed the base, where Lorelei ordered Ka-Zar to stab Deadpool through the head, though his healing factor quickly repaired him. Lorelei then took over Bob and Weasel, but Deadpool, with a knife through his ears, was immune to her powers and managed to knock her down, freeing the others. Piper and Lorelei went running for it and Brainchild sought to stop the heroes. He sent Amphibius and Barbarus to stop Ka-Zar and had Piper send a group of dinosaurs to battle Bob and Weasel, but Brainchild could not figure out where Deadpool had gone. Using the sewer systems, Deadpool managed to get to the control tower, where Bob and Weasel teleported to him. When they accessed Brainchild’s private pornography files, he sensed where they were and had Piper send more dinosaurs after them, but they teleported the dinosaurs to New York. Ka-Zar broke Piper’s pipe, then the Mutates sought to escape on the back of pterodactyls. Amphibius and Barbarus got safely away, but Deadpool shot the pterodactyl carrying Brainchild, Lorelei, and Piper, and left them falling into a group of dinosaurs below them.

(Marvel Comics Presents II#6/2) - When Roxxon and hired criminals Plunderer (Parnival Plunder), Killer Shrike (Simon Maddicks), Manticore, and Saboteur, as well as several Mandroids, invaded the Savage Land, the Mutates (Amphibius, Barbarus, Brainchild, Lorelei) joined Ka-Zar, Shanna, Zabu, Devil Dinosaur, Moonboy, and Stegron in fighting them off. Brainchild was initially reluctant to trust Ka-Zar until he reminded them of the seriousness of the stakes. A deadly battle broke out and a lot of Stegron's dinosaurs were killed.

(Marvel Comics Presents II#7/2) - Using a device that Brainchild had modified, Stegron revived the dinosaurs as zombies and battle resumed. The tides quickly turned when Lorelei took over the minds of the male enemies and Roxxon was quickly chased out of the Savage Land.

(New Mutants IV#10 (fb) - BTS) - Amphibius, claiming that the sea had spoken to him and that Magneto's Asteroid M had risen to the surface, told his fellow Mutates about this, but they didn't want to go find him. Worm put Sauron, Barbarus, and Lupo under his control, and they commandeered a ship to find Magneto.

(New Mutants IV#10) - When threatened by the military at Kitakyushu, Japan, Sauron destroyed an armed vehicle, creating an international incident. The New Mutants (Cannonball, Sunspot, Warlock) investigated and found the Mutates on the deck of the ship. In the skies, Cannonball attacked Sauron, mindful of what had happened the last time they'd fought. While battle broke out on the boat, Karma realized the Mutates were immune to her powers of psychic possession. Barbarus got Sunspot in a hold while Cypher and Warlock dodged the blows of Amphibius and Lupo, respectively. Worm went scuttling to the bows of the ship. Cannonball defeated Sauron by plowing him through the ship, and the New Mutants swiftly defeated the other three Mutates. Worm spread his slime through Barbarus, soon getting Cannonball and Sunspot under his control. After breaching the hull of the ship, exposing Worm's hiding place, Karma and Moonstar attacked and Moonstar swiftly defeated Worm with a kick, allowing Karma to get the others under her control. Worm battled Karma for control of his mind, but she entered his mind and learned why they were there. Karma convinced a disbelieving Worm that the X-Men were in charge of the Asteroid, and of Magneto, and Worm ordered the Mutates to return to the Savage Land.

SECRET WARS III HAPPENED

(Secret Empire: Underground#1 (fb) - BTS) - Sauron returned to the Savage Land and hypnotized the Savage Land Mutates (Vertigo, Lupa, Gaza, Piper, Whiteout) into following him, and with their help he claimed power. Sauron began imprisoning anyone who offended or opposed him, though he kept the three Mutate women at his side as he liked to look at them. Lupa found a Cosmic Cube fragment and it increased her power, allowing her to control dinosaurs as well; with the help of Whiteout and Vertigo, she overthrew Sauron and took over ruling her people.

(Secret Empire: Underground#1) - The Underground (Ant-Man, Captain America (Sam Wilson), Hercules, Iron Man (Tony Stark A.I.), Mockingbird, Quicksilver)  formed a tentative alliance with Sauron to retrieve the fragment. Gaza and Piper attacked them on the backs of dinosaurs, then were defeated. Mockingbird approached the three women solo and found them reasonable as rulers, but they refused to give up the fragment, so the Underground attacked. Lupa unleashed her wolves against the team, and she fought Hercules himself as Whiteout blinded Quicksilver (before a wolf was thrown against her) and Vertigo impacted Captain America. Vertigo attacked Sauron directly, revealing how she’d found the cloning tanks and had realized she was a clone with memories of her past selves dying, and he badly wounded her again. Ant-Man liberated the fragment from Lupa, but Sauron stole it until Vertigo and Whiteout unleashed massive powers against him and Quicksilver stole the fragment. The Underground left peacefully.

(X-Men Annual IV#1) - Brainchild weaponized dinosaurs and, with Gaza and other tribesmen at his side, attacked Central Park and tried to annex parks for his control in New York City. The X-Men (Forge, Havok, Iceman, Magik, Marvel Girl, Synch) and Spider-Man (Miles Morales) defeated him.

The Savage Land Mutates (Barbarus, Gaza, Lupo, Amphibius, Brainchild and Vertigo) appeared in David Smeds' novel "X-Men: Law of the Jungle." This novel's plot entails Brain-Child finding a copy of Three Faces of Eve in Magento's laboratory and deciding to revive Sauron, but this time mold him psychologically so as to diminish his impulsive and tactically indiscreet tendencies. After he succeeded, Sauron ordered Brain-Child to began raids on Tongah's tribe and other Savage Land tribes. The Savage Land Mutates have no initiative due to Magneto's psychological conditioning, so they readily followed Sauron. Sauron ordered these raids to draw the X-Men to the Savage Land to feed on them.
