Powers/Abilities: The
Auctioneer does not possess any
superhuman powers but was a skilled manipulator. He used psychotropic
drugs to
place victims under his thrall and carried a cane which could project
plexiwrap
that could cover his victim. The plexiwrap allowed air to enter but
pheromones
could not escape. The Auctioneer also rode in a specially designed
limousine
that was equipped with a plexishield to divide the front seat from the
back
seat and psychotropic gas projectors.
History:
(Alpha Flight I#42) - When Purple Girl and a mind-controlled Madison Jeffries escaped Alpha Flight and flew to Toronto, the Auctioneer noticed them and confronted Purple Girl on the streets of Toronto. Introducing himself, the Auctioneer promised to teach Purple Girl how to use her then-newfound powers to make herself rich and announced that he was out on the town to visit a special auction. Inviting Purple Girl into his car, the Auctioneer raised the plexishield in the limo and sprayed Purple Girl and Jeffries with psychotropic gas. Later, at a criminal weapons auction, the Auctioneer revealed that he had Purple Girl and Madison Jeffries up for auction. Using psychotropic drugs to control Purple Girl, the Auctioneer forced her to force Jeffries to demonstrate his powers for the criminals. When Purple Girl began resisting the drugs, the Auctioneer trapped her in plexiwrap projected from his cane. He then revealed that the captured Melanie Killgrave, Purple Girl’s mother, and exclaimed that if Purple Girl could not be influenced by drugs then he would force her hand with more crude means. With Purple Girl trapped in plexiwrap, Madison Jeffries was able to shake off her control and signal the nearby Alpha Flight, who had tracked Purple Girl to Toronto. While Alpha Flight made quick work of the criminals and rescued Melanie Killgrave, Purple Girl managed to tear her plexiwrap on a nail and, using her powers, ordered the Auctioneer to drop dead. His heart seizing, the Auctioneer fell to the ground. Worried that she might have actually killed him, Purple Girl began to think herself a menace but Puck found a heartbeat and pulse on the Auctioneer, revealing that he still lived. Still unsure what to do with Purple Girl, Vindicator ordered Alpha Flight to leave the Auctioneer for the mounties.

CLARIFICATIONS:
The
Auctioneer has no known connections to
James was the chauffeur for the Auctioneer. He left the car waiting when the Auctioneer manipulated Purple Girl into the car and after the Auctioneer gassed Purple Girl and Madison Jeffries, the Auctioneer ordered James to take him to the criminal weapons auction. At the auction, when Purple Girl resisted his drugs, the Auctioneer ordered his bodyguard and James to bring out Melanie Killgrave, Purple Girl’s mother. James was presumably knocked unconscious with many of the other criminals when Alpha Flight disrupted the auction.
