CLOUDMEN
Classification: Human mutates (1950s era)
Location/Base of Operations: Mobile in the atmosphere, Earth
Known Members: All unnamed
Affiliations: None
First Appearance: Astonishing#5/4 (August, 1951)
Powers/Abilities: Cloudmen were originally normal humans who had been transformed via a body-dissolving treatment called X-2-A into small cherub-like humanoids that could float high up in the air. They were intangible and resembled small puffs of cloud.
Traits: The Cloudmen gathered in small groups and liked to abduct humans flying in planes in the air, taunting them just before they were changed into more cloud-like people. A senior Cloudman had dreams of conquering the Earth by replacing humans on the surface. They liked to wear colored togas that must've been intangible as well.
History:
(Astonishing#5/4 (fb) - BTS) - The origin of the Cloudmen is unknown. The Cloudmen's numbers began to increase when warplane airmen and airliner passengers were kidnapped and forced treatment to dissolve their human forms into semi-intangible impish bodies that then lived in the clouds.
(Astonishing#5/4) - 30,000 feet in the skies above Korea, a lone US jet pilot's plane was pulled down to land on a cloud bank. Incredulous, the pilot donned his air breathing equipment to investigate and opened the canopy, only to be set upon by a gang of Cloudmen, who sought to rip off his oxygen mask. The pilot struggled, his firearm's bullets passing right through them. The little beings managed to pull off his mask and applied the flesh and bone-dissolving solution X-2-A. The pilot was unable to properly escape as his body began to slowly lose solidity and he turned into a Cloudman. Later, he watched over the landscape as a giant face in the clouds.

Perhaps the reason why they were never heard from again is because the pilot maintained enough of his own will and thwarted their dire plans of world conquest, possibly explaining why he didn't take on an impish form. Or they split into different factions: the cirrus faction, the cumulus faction, nimbostratus, etc. Or they just got blown about so much they never had a chance to properly organize into a cohesive attack force. Or they gave up and admitted it was a daft idea. Still, it makes you wonder what a rain shower might actually be...
