PROTECTOR
Real Name: Protector
Identity/Class: Extraterrestrial (Rhunian) android
Occupation: Protector of Rhunian space
Group Membership: Protectors
Enemies: Invaders of Rhunian space, notably Avalon, Thor
Known Relatives: Inapplicable
Aliases: None
Base of Operations: Black Stars
First Appearance: Thor I#219 (January, 1974)
Powers/Abilities: The Protector was a humanoid android that was self-aware. It stood about 10 feet tall and was capable of self-guided flight; it could also deliver powerful blasts from its hands and was durable enough to withstand Thor's blows from his hammer, although its visor proved to be its weak spot.
History:
(Thor I#219 (fb) - BTS) - Dracus created tiny androids to protect the space-roving Black Stars from invaders and to maintain peace.
(Thor I#219) - Thor and Avalon stood on the surface of the space scoop that collected space debris to fuel the Black Stars. This triggered the launch of the Protector, which emerged from within a sphere once it was near its target. The Protector blasted Avalon and then knocked him down by ramming his chest. Thor declared that he would carry this fight and so the Protector attacked him next, but the android withstood a direct blow from Thor's mallet, then punched the Asgardian back. As the Protector attempted to crush Thor's head, Thor smashed once more, ripping apart the android's visor before throwing the Protector into space where it exploded.
Comments: Created by Gerry Conway (script), John Buscema (pencils) and Mike Esposito (inks).
Dracus, the creator of the tiny androids that helped protect and take care of the space scoops, indicated that he expected the powers of his creations to have changed across the years, so this Protector's form and abilities may have changed since their inception.
Initially described as the Protector, the next issue reveals that there are many.
