History: (Blonde Phantom#12/3 (fb) - BTS) - Professor Morte's assistant was an exceptional researcher. He performed his own experiments, hidden from Prof. Morte, on spiders, and discovered a treatment to grow spiders bigger and stronger than men. Blinded by mad dreams of world domination the assistant started to create his own army of giant spiders.

The spiders needed human blood, so the assistant killed many people and used them as food for his pets. To divert attention from himself he also perfectly disguised as Professor Morte during his crimes.

(Blonde Phantom#12/3) - One night during one of his hunts the assistant captured a new victim but was interrupted by Miss America, who was passing casually in the country. The assistant surprised Miss America with a double kick and fled.
Shortly after the assistant and Professor Morte went to the police to help their chemist to study the green web used by the killer. The professor stated, as he had done before, that the people killed and the web had one possible source: giant, bloodsucking spiders! Miss America noticed the resemblance between the killer and Professor Morte, but waited before making any allegations.
Infact, a few minutes later, outside the police headquarters, she was attacked again by the killer, and this time she saw him very well. She was almost captured in a spider web, but still managed to have him run away. It was actually the disguised assistant, who had framed Professor Morte.
Shortly after Miss America flew to Professor Morte's house and accused him of the crimes. This time she had her guard down and was captured by the assistant. The mad scientist showed to his master his work: giant bloodsucking spiders that he would command to conquer the world! When he was ready to stab Miss America she kicked him and he shattered the glass cells of the spiders. Attracted by his blood the spiders ate him.
Miss America and Professor Morte fled and the spiders were killed by the police.

Comments: Created by Charles Nicholas (artist).

The evil scientist never called himself "Spiderman," the name was only given in the title. It is unrevealed how the madman controlled the spiders, but they probably obeyed him because he fed them. It is likely that he used other factors in the treatment to grow them, something that included a sort of mind control, etc.

Professor Morte's name was a clear attempt to divert the reader's attention on the wrong suspect, "morte"means "death" in Italian.

Professor Morte

Professor Morte was an important entomologist. He had an assistant and was unaware of his plans and bloody works.

Professor Morte was contacted by the police about the many cases of people killed and eaten by unrecognized animals. Morte was quite right in identifying the killer. Even if he knew that giant spiders didn't exist, he realized that they could be the only cause.

Days later he had further proof after examining the web taken by Miss America.
He was however also the main suspect.

He was almost killed by his assistant and was saved by Miss America.

giant spiders

The giant spiders were stronger than a normal human, ate human blood and produced a green, glowing, sticky web that their creator used as a weapon to entangle and entrap his victims. They were almost invulnerable to conventional weapons, as bullets didn't harm them, but they were affected by poison.

The spiders were hidden in the basement of Professor Morte's house.
They were rather calm in their glass spheres, and waited for their bloody meal. The mad scientist fed human blood.

But when the assistant fell onto the glass, breaking it, he was wounded, and the smell of his blood attracted the giant arachnids, which assaulted and killed him in a very horrible way. They also swarmed through the secret laboratory, blocking the stairs and tried to attack Miss America and Professor Morte, but the heroine flew through a window with the scientist.

Later the police found them prowling in the country. They killed the spiders using poison gas.
