Twoyoungmen had
unspecified mystic abilities native to a Sarcee mystic. After his
death, his
skull emitted a mystic warning of danger that Shaman could sense
whenever a
threat was looming. He later took on a ghostly form that appeared before
his grandson, Michael.
History:
(Alpha
Flight
I#5/2 (fb)) - Grandfather Twoyoungmen was
visited by his grandson, Dr. Michael Twoyoungmen, who announced that he
was
turning his back on the old mystic ways of the Sarcee. Grandfather
tried to
remind Michael that he could deny his own heritage and that Michael's
path was
pre-ordained. Michael shrugged off the attempts to dissuade him,
explaining to
Grandfather that the present day was an age of science and that he was
a doctor
with a wife and child. Michael then asked Grandfather if he would have
Michael
sacrifice all of those things for something that Grandfather alone
believed, to
which Grandfather replied that Michael must, as the ancient Sarcee
knowledge
had to be passed from blood to blood. Michael quickly reminded
Grandfather that
Michael's father had died, freeing Michael of his bond to Grandfather
and the
old ways. He then said goodbye to Grandfather as Grandfather spoke that
Michael
knew what he was turning away from. Grandfather then proclaimed that
the white
man's ways had clouded Michael's wisdom and that a time of great
testing way
ahead. Grandfather Twoyoungmen later passed away on the same day that
Michael's
wife Katheryn died.
(Alpha Flight I#1) - When the Great Beast Tundra's arrival on the Earthly plane loomed, Michael (now known as Alpha Flight's Shaman) sensed an approaching danger. Hearing Grandfather's voice, Michael took a box down from his office shelf and opened it, revealing Grandfather Twoyoungmen's skull. Mystically speaking to the skull, Michael bade the skull to speak to him and explained that he awaited the words of his grandfather.
(Alpha
Flight I#31) - Michael Twoyoungmen arrived at the cabin he had spent
several years at and found his Grandfather's skull. His Grandfather's
voice spoke of Michael's rejection of his mystical heritage fueled by
personal doubts. The spirit of his Grandfather then appeared and
Michael declared that he now sought to reclaim his powers. Grandfather
next made them all vanish.
(Alpha Flight I#34) - Now in the barren lands, near the ancient Sarcee shaman cairns, the ghostly form of Grandfather attended his grandson Michael, showing the path where he would be tested in reclaiming his powers.
(Alpha Flight I#35) - Grandfather's ghost told Michael that animal spirits would appear to test him on his spirit journey. Later, once Michael had completed his initial spirit journey, Grandfather passed the sacred relics of the eagle crest and caribou cloak that allowed Michael to reclaim his magical powers. Grandfather told him that his last test was to avenge his ancestors against the Vikings who once stole the ancient artifacts.
Comments: Created by John
Byrne (writer & artist).
Grandfather called Michael the 40th in a long line of Sarcee mystics, marking himself as the 38th in that line.
Grandfather
Twoyoungmen's first
name was never revealed.
The images show him sitting in front of a fire, hence the yellow glow.
Thanks to Grendel Prime for adding the AF#31, 34 & 35 appearances.
