History:
(Rawhide Kid I#64/1 (fb) - BTS) - Zamora and his outlaws preyed on a small village of farmers, stealing food supplies and valuables under threat of damage and death. Zamora lusted after one of the villagers, Maria, who always resisted his amorous advances.
(Rawhide Kid I#64/1) - One villager, Mendoza, was able to recruit the Rawhide Kid to aid them against Zamora and his outlaws. However, at the same time, Zamora once more raided the farming village, his band of outlaws attacking the villagers and forcefully taking more food. He demanded Maria marry him but she angrily slapped his face instead. Later, Mendoza returned to his village with the Rawhide Kid, who taught the locals how to defend themselves. Elsewhere, Zamora had roped a man in another village, who reluctantly told him of an American gunslinging defender. Angered, Zamora led his desperadoes in a charge against Maria's village, firing at the agile Rawhide Kid, but missing. Maria suddenly came out of hiding and Zamora captured her, holding her hostage so that the Rawhide Kid would surrender. Zamora then had the disarmed Rawhide Kid tied and mounted on a horse, intending to parade the heroic gunslinger in other villages to demonstrate what would happen to those who opposed him. The next day, Zamora and his men set up camp, but Maria had secretly followed, freeing the prisoner from his bonds and handing the Rawhide Kid his guns. He challenged Zamora and his outlaws, who tried to gun him down, but the Rawhide Kid instead shot them down.
Comments: Created by Larry Lieber (writer & pencils) and Herb Trimpe (inks).
It's not revealed if the Rawhide Kid actually killed Zamora in the shoot-out, or was just wounded and later imprisoned.
This story was later reprinted in Rawhide Kid I#142/1, which is where the images are from.
