History: (X-Factor III#6 (fb) - BTS) - Mrs. Charnoff ran the St. Joan Orphanage in the Bowery section of New York, where Layla Miller had been taken when her parents died in an auto accident. After some incidents involving the mutant Layla and some of the other kids freaking out, Layla ran away and Mrs. Charnoff grew worried about Layla's disappearance, unaware that Layla had actually ran away by choice. A short time later, Layla Miller phoned Mrs. Charnoff, who immediately rushed to Layla.
(X-Factor III#6) - Finding Layla sitting on the stoop
of the X-Factor Investigations building in Mutant Town, Mrs. Charnoff
found herself relieved that X-Factor Investigations had been taking
care of Layla. After briefly explaining to the nearby Wolfsbane about
Layla's past incidents with the other orphans due to her mutant nature,
Charnoff commented that she knew there wouldn't be any future incidents
since Layla had lost her mutant powers. Charnoff then took Layla back
to the orphanage, where Charnoff happily welcomed Layla back despite
the other kids not being so thrilled. Unsure of what to think about
Layla leaving, Wolfsbane informed her teammate Madrox and the two
decided to pay a visit to St. Joan's Orphanage, where they asked Mrs.
Charnoff to see Layla. Mrs. Charnoff nervously explained that it wasn't
a good time to see Layla but Madrox and Wolfsbane pressed and Wolfsbane
eventually decided to transform into her wolf form and picked up
Layla's scent. Soon tracking Layla to one of the orphanage's rooms,
Wolfsbane and Madrox found Layla's face covered in bruises. Returning
to Mrs. Charnoff, Madrox and Wolfsbane explained their plans to take
Layla back with them. Mrs. Charnoff somewhat condescendingly informed
them that she could not legally turn Layla over to a non-existent
family and that Madrox and Wolfsbane would have to be vetted before she
could turn Layla over to them. She continued, stating that she was
quite certain Madrox and Wolfsbane would not be approved as foster
posters for Layla and explained that Layla was essentially stuck at St.
Joan's until she was of age. Wolfsbane replied that they would fight
St. Joan's attempts to keep Layla and Charnoff responded that they
would lose the legal fight. Before Madrox and Wolfsbane left, Charnoff
nervously commented that she "hoped" Layla did not escape again, as it
was easy to leave unobserved and that if Layla escaped on her own or in
the company of adults, Charnoff would know where to begin looking. She
further mentioned that with all of the paperwork piling up on her desk,
Charnoff wasn't sure when she would have a chance to report Layla's
disappearance and that she could slip through the cracks. Picking Mrs.
Charnoff's not-too-subtle hints, Madrox and Wolfsbane returned to
X-Factor Investigations with Layla Miller in tow.
