History:
(Uncanny X-Men I#267 - BTS) - On the run from Nanny
and the Orphan
Maker, Gambit (Remy LeBeau) took the preteen Storm (Ororo Munroe)
to New Orleans, where he arranged quarters for them in the Big Easy's
illustrious French Quarter.
(Uncanny X-Men I#267) - After sleeping for most of the day
(due to the fact she'd overexerted her
young form using her powers lifting a plane to escape Nanny),
Storm woke up hungry. Gambit took her to "Granny Gumbo's" restaurant where
the two enjoyed the delights of typical Cajun cuisine. Feeling full
after finishing Granny's gumbo, the old cook insisted the two had a bowl
of her special bread pudding. Ignoring Ororo's pleas that she'd burst if
she'd even tried to have another bite, Granny ladened up the delicacy
anyway. She watched how her young guest finished the sizeable bowl of
pudding before returning to her kitchen, while a thoroughly stuffed
Storm admitted to Gambit she doubted she could ever walk, let alone fly
again.

Though she was never named on panel, I'd like to offer the
name "Granny Gumbo", consider it as an homage to a great 'nawlans dish
and fine alliteration in the mighty Marvel métier. Yours truly first
learned of gumbo and bread pudding through this comic, but since this
was at least a decade or so before the internet I had no idea what it
was or how to prepare it... But it must be tasty if Storm liked it. When
I finally figured out what it was and how to make it (using this fine,
though hardly traditional recipe),
I never looked back. So, my hat's off to Chris Claremont for writing
tiny, borderline insignicant tidbits that live on in the minds of the
readership... Me, my clogged arteries and my cardiologist thank you.
