INTERDIMENSIONAL SCANNER

Classification: Terrestrial technology

Creator: Tony Stark

User/Possessors: Black Panther (T'Challa), Iron Man (Tony Stark), Thor Odinson

First Appearance: Avengers I#86 (March, 1971)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: Powered by the energies of Thor's hammer, the Interdimensional Scanner was designed to scan the multiverse for myriad alternate realities and project them onto a video screen, allowing the device’s operators to observe other dimensions.

History:
(Avengers I#85) - Following an adventure in Arkon's extradimensional realm of Polemachus, Thor used his hammer to transport himself and the other Avengers back home; but four of the group--Goliath (Clint Barton), Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Vision--were instead transported to Earth-712 (see comments).

(Avengers I#86) - Attempting to locate their missing teammates, Iron Man activated the Interdimensional Scanner while Thor used his hammer to power the device--upon the Scanner's initial activation, Iron Man warned Thor to limit the energy he released, because the device was on the verge of exploding from the tremendous power build-up. They then began searching alternate realities to locate where their four teammates could be.

Meanwhile, the missing quartet was helping members of the Squadron Supreme battle Brain-Child, who was attempting to destroy their world.

Coincidentally, after the menace was over and Earth-712 was spared, Iron Man had Thor conjure up a dimensional portal, and the four Avengers were whisked away back to their native Earth.

Upon their return to their home-world, the formerly-missing Avengers decided to join their teammates for coffee, leaving Vision behind to ponder whether they had truly arrived on Earth-616, or perhaps some other alternate reality that was identical to their own.

Comments: Created by Roy Thomas, Sal Buscema and Jim Mooney.

Given its large size, the Interdimensional Scanner is probably behind-the-scenes in every appearance of Avengers Mansion from Avengers I#86 until the Mansion’s later destruction. Then again, it’s just as possible that Iron Man could have dismantled it at some point and put something else in its location within Avengers Mansion ... the world may never know.

Or it's possible that Iron Man later rebuilt and/or modified the device to a smaller size, and it was somewhere in the background.

And it was never explained why the four Avengers just happened to appear on Earth-712--maybe Professor Imam conjured them there to save the world because all the other Squadron members had initially been duped into helping Brain Child.--Ron Fredricks
