MAGNETIC
SPACE-COMMUNICATOR
Classification: Terrestrial
technological device
Creator: Dane Whitman
User/Possessors: Dane Whitman, Norris
First
Appearance: Avengers I#47
(December, 1967)
Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Magnetic
Space-Communicator could
project magnetic rays as far as outer space and could absorb magnetic
rays upon
their return to Earth, essentially acting a sort of sonar system via
magnetic
energy. It could also transmit encoded messages via the magnetic rays.
To keep
the machine from overloading during an instance where large amounts of
magnetic
rays were being intercepted, it was also equipped with an
Electro-Stabilizer to
help stabilize the machine.
History:
(Avengers
I#47) –
Inside Garrett Castle, Dane Whitman
used the Magnetic Space-Communicator in an attempt to communicate with
extraterrestrial beings. Unbeknownst to Whitman, the magnetic rays
given off by
the Magnetic Space-Communicator were received by Magneto, who was
exiled to a
remote planet by the enigmatic Stranger. Despite warnings from his
assistant
Norris, Dane Whitman remained in contact with what he thought was an
alien
being claiming for peace with Earth, hoping to prove himself to science
and
make up for his uncle's criminal activities as the Black Knight. When
the
Magnetic Space-Communicator began intercepting large amounts of
magnetic rays,
Dane asked for Norris' help in working the device but Norris, desiring
fame and
fortune for himself, knocked out Whitman just as Magneto and Toad
arrived on
Earth, having following the rays to their source. Magneto immediately
ordered
Norris to show him how the Magnetic Space-Communicator worked but when
Norris
tried to trick Magneto and send him back via the magnetic rays, Magneto
attacked
Norris for his deception, placing him in the Garrett Castle dungeons.
(Avengers
I#48) – Upon regaining
consciousness, Dane Whitman quietly made his way to the chamber that
housed the
Magnetic Space-Communicator, contemplating how his own designs had
brought
Magneto to Earth.
Comments: Created by Roy
Thomas, John Buscema and
George Tuska.
One
could argue that, since the
Magnetic Space-Communicator was not destroyed in its original story,
that it
could be behind-the-scenes somewhere in every appearance of Garrett
Castle...
