Powers/Abilities: As his reality's Totem,
Spider-Monkey possessed all the superhuman abilities most commonly
associated with Spider-Totems throughout the multiverse. Among those
abilities were superhuman strength (class 10, possibly higher),
increased stamina, superhuman reflexes and an early warning
"spider-sense." Spider-Monkey had a prehensile tale he used in combat
for a variety of purposes. Like all inhabitants of Earth-95019,
Spider-Monkey was decidedly more bloodthirsty, prone to bouts of excess
violence and not above killing opponents who showed no intention of
reforming.

History: (Marvel Apes: Amazing Spider-Monkey I#1 (fb)) -
Peter Parker was a meek primate, living with his aunt and uncle.
Visiting a science exhibit on a school trip one day, a radioactive
spider happened to find its way to the bunch of bananas that Peter had
brought for lunch. Peter was eventually bitten by the spider when
reaching for a banana and quickly discovered he had superpowers. At
first, he used these powers to become Spider-Monkey, the latest,
greatest television star and show performer. However, when his Uncle Ben
was killed by a robber, he vowed to use his powers to help all ape-kind. Eventually,
he teamed up with the Apevengers against the extradimensional intruders
Marty Blank and Fiona Fitzhugh of Earth-38831. Suspecting that Marty
Blank was growing nervous on Earth-95019, Spider-Monkey confronted him
and the two discussed some of Spider-Monkey's history and how Blank was
nervous due to the excessive violence that the Earth-95019 heroes were
showing criminals. Spider-Monkey attempted to explain that criminals
deserved such an end but Marty angrily replied that Spider-Monkey was
nothing like the Spider-Man of Marty's world. Shortly thereafter, when
the Apevengers discovered that their "Captain America" was actually the
vampire Baron Blood. Spider-Monkey then joined the Apevengers in
purging the vampire menace and his vampirized Invaders.
(Marvel Apes: Speedball Special I#1 - BTS) - While
Speedball-95019 was on Earth-38331, he had a dream in which he was
returned to Earth-95019, where Spider-Monkey and the Apevengers
attacked him for being a traitor.
(Marvel Apes: Amazing Spider-Monkey I#1) - Recent events led Spider-Monkey to do a considerable amount of soul-searching. Thinking back to an encounter he had with 38831's Gibbon, who told him he was nowhere near the hero "his" Spider-Man was, Parker began to doubt the Apevengers' mission to invade Earth-38331. His doubts grew when he joined the Apevengers in opposing Shang Chi-Chi's new Master Brotherhood of Evil Apes. During the fight, Shang asked Spider-Monkey to join them and, much to his own amazement, he momentarily considered the offer. However, after witnessing his teammates brutally slaughtering their opponents, he realized their planned invasion had to stop. Back at Apevengers Tower, he witnessed how Iron Mandrill used the dimensional technology left behind by Fiona Fitzhugh-38331 to establish a connection with Earth-38331, also causing the return of their wayward, rebellious member Speedball and his companion, Earth-38331's Red Ghost, to Earth-95019. Wolverine planned to execute Speedball for his actions but found both arrivals were still intangible as part of the portal's process. Spider-Monkey, finally realizing his teammates' desire for violence was excessive, pulled out the flux capacitor and shut down the portal. When the Red Ghost used his phasing powers to escape with Speedball, the Apevengers turned their fury towards Spider-Monkey. After quickly taking out Captain America, Spider-Monkey succesfully created a distraction by forcing Doctor Bruce Bananner to turn into the mindless, outraged Hulk. Spider-Monkey made his escape and went into hiding, strengthened by the belief that by doing what he felt was the right thing, he'd become a little more like Earth-38331's Spider-Man.
(Marvel Apes: Amazing Spider-Monkey I#1 - BTS) -
Spider-Monkey's actions became public knowledge. Two days after he'd
become a renegade, New York newspaper the Daily Banana had him on the
cover, asking whether the "Der-Mon" was a threat or menace.
(Marvel Zombies: Evil Evolution I#1 (fb)) - Spider-Monkey arrived in time to save Speedball and the Earth-38331 Red Ghost, who were being chased by Earth-21050's zombified heroes, who had followed the dimensional energy signature left behind by Speedball and Red Ghost-38331. He then joined the Apevengers in opposing the zombies, eventually forcing them back through the dimensional gate with which they had accessed Earth-95019. Spider-Monkey and Speedball then made themselves scarce, seeing as they were still hated by the vengeful Apevengers. However, they did see Iron Mandrill taking the arm of the zombie Triton back to his lab. Intrigued, the duo began to shadow Stark Industries and noticed something was wrong when, over the next several days, numerous women went in to see Stark, only to never come out again while a putrid stench started to seep from the building. Correctly assuming the worst, Spider-Monkey and Speedball succesfully lured the Apevengers to Stark's labs. There, it was revealed Iron Mandrill had been infected during the team's initial fight against the zombies and had been busy constructing a dimensional gateway to the zombie's native universe using Triton's severed arm as a homing beacon and his dates for food. The Mandrill was quickly slain and the ferocious, revenge-oriented Apevengers declared all-out war on the zombieworld, planning a pre-emptive strike, determined to annihilate their enemy before their enemy annihilated them.
(Marvel
Zombies: Evil Evolution I#1) - Spider-Monkey and Speedball called a
temporary truce with the Apevengers as they prepared for the invasion
of the zombieverse. Joined by the Outsiders, the Fantastic Four and
Alpha Flight, the apes arrived on Earth-21050 in time to prevent the
zombies from tearing apart Earth-38331's Red Ghost, the Super-Apes, the
Gibbon, Gorilla Girl, Jane Potter and Ape X, who had been transported
to Earth-21050 due to a transdimensional transfer mishap. Spider-Monkey
did his best
to prevent anyone's deaths, saving Speedball once again, only to be
severely injured by the zombified Doctor Doom's energy blasts. In
retaliation, the Red Ghost's magnetic monkey Peotor used his powers to
crush Doom within his own armor. Perhaps through this display of force,
Spider-Monkey, Peotor, Speedball, Gibbon, Jane and Ape X fell through
the concrete into a SHIELD base, where Magneto was monitoring the
situation. Before they could explain the situation to the still
unaffected master of magnetism, Jane Potter was attacked by the severed
head of zombie Mr. Fantastic, who threatened to bite her if the heroes
attacked. Reed forced Spider-Monkey and the other apes to recount how
the simians and the Earth-38331 natives had wound up on his world. The
FF's decapitated head then suggested a bold plan using both the
dimensional transporter and his time machine to go back a few days and
prevent this mix up from occuring in all three dimensions (Earth-95019,
Earth-21050 and Earth-38331). While trying
to get to the Baxter Building through the air, the heroes were attacked
by zombies, who claimed both Speedball and Gibbon. After reaching the
FF's headquarters, Zombie Reed began work on modifying the platform and
dimensional portal. He then announced someone had to go through, back
to Earth-95019's past to destroy the Iron Mandrill's initial gateway
that drew the zombies' attention when the Apevengers tried to get
Speedball back. Spider-Monkey suddenly realized the proposed plan would
cause a temporal paradox: while they would be protected from the
effects of the changing timelines, whoever went back to carry out the
mission would not be coming back. Ape X, realizing he was the
only one fit to go, killed zombie Reed before he left, much to the
injured Spider-Monkey's relief. Then, X's girlfriend Gorilla Girl
punched Roy out and took his place on the already prepped platform.
Spider-Monkey sent her back to the recent past of Earth-8101 (a world
in which the Earth-21050 zombies did not invade the ape world), where
she used the
wrench she'd recently taken from the deceased Apevenger Wrencher to
bash in the Iron Mandrill's portal. As planned, this event altered the
timeline sufficiently, preventing the three universes from ever
connecting on that Earth.

Now, I'm no expert on temporal mechanics but for my money (and
headache), it might have been a whole lot easier if Earth-8101 had
never spun off to create reality-95019 (when the zombies invaded). It's
needlessly confusing, especially when you consider the reset button was
eventually pushed (or rather, bashed in after the gateway was
destroyed) on the original Earth-8101, preventing the divergence.
Keeping four seperate and distinctive Earths apart with their own, hard
to remember, designation wasn't exactly easy, especially when
characters and events started to intersect, intercede and interact in a
manner most silly. But, while writing profiles like this, one can do
little more than grind your teeth and remember the songwriting wisdom
of the legendary Irving Cohen... "Da-da-da, dee-dee-dee, ah, whatever
da hell else ya wanna put in dere." And look ma, I'm even doing it
without yelling
for a bouncy C.
Unless otherwise stated, everyone mentioned in this profile is the counterpart native to Earth-95019.
While the events
that occurred in the flashback in Marvel Apes: The Amazing
Spider-Monkey I#1 mirrored the events that occurred in Marvel Apes
I#1-4, the events seen in that mini-series are the events as they
occurred on Earth-8101. This profile is focused on the Earth-95019
Spider-Monkey and therefore, only the events seen in flashbacks in
issues pertaining to Earth-95019 (Marvel Apes: Speedball Special I#1,
Marvel Apes: The Amazing Spider-Monkey I#1, Marvel Apes: Prime Eight
Special I#1 & Marvel Zombies: Evil Evolution I#1) are included in
this profile. Speaking of which, Spider-Monkey does appear in the last
2-page spread of Marvel Apes: Prime Eight Special I#1 but that last
2-spread is merely a pinup of Earth-95019 had it become truly overrun
by the 21050 zombies and therefore, is not an actual appearance.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Spider-Monkey should not be confused with
Ben and May Parker were a happily married primate couple without any
offspring. They happily took care of their orphaned nephew Peter and
raised them as their own. Though meek and easily intimidated, the youth
was an excellent student. Ben taught Peter that with great power came
great responsibility while the doting May enjoyed spoiling him by making
sure the boy always had a fresh bunch of bananas for lunch. During a visit
to a science exhibit, a radioactive spider nestled among those bananas and
bit Peter, giving him superpowers. Unbeknownst to Ben and May, he began
using these abilities to launch himself as a TV star. Newfound celebrity
made him vain and arrogant, refusing to help a cop stop a criminal he
could have easily apprehended. Not too long after that incident, the same
criminal tried to rob the Parker home, killing Ben Parker in the process.
When Spider-Monkey tracked the killer down, he was stunned to find it was
the man he could have sent to prison earlier. This tragedy made him
dedicate his life to become a true hero.
