History:
(Generation X#0.5 (fb) - BTS) - Growing up poor in the barrios of East
Lost Angeles, Miguela Tores proved to be tough. She managed to form a
street gang around her, even when she was in her early teens. She also
befriended Angelo Espinosa, a local boy who only wanted to do good but
was slowly drawn into their criminal lifestyle.
(Generation X#0.5) - Angelo's religious mother Estella didn't
care for Tores and did everything she could to keep her son away from
her. However, the smitten boy joined Tores and her gang (D., Gordo and
Lupo) for a car trip into their rival gang's turf.
(Generation X#34 (fb) ) - Angelo didn't care for going
into the Figueroa street boys' neighborhood, but was handed a hand gun
by Lupo either way.
(Generation X#34 ~ Generation X#0.5) - Tores planned
to make amends but she hadn't counted on Lupo's thirst for revenge after
the Figs killed a member of his family. As soon as Tores steered their
car into the Fig neighborhood, Lupo pulled his gun, killing several gang
members within moments
(Generation X#0.5) - The remaining hoodlums opened fire, killing
Gordo. Both Tores and Angelo were so stunned by the unexpected turn of
events they manifested their mutant powers. Tores was so overwhelmed by
her newfound psionic emergence, she lost control over the wheel and
crashed the vehicle. She was saved by Lupo, even as a bum moved into the
car wreck to rob the unconscious Angelo and Gordo. Angelo came to in
time to escape before the car blew up. The bodies of Gordo and the bum
were scorched beyond identification, leading the authorities to believe
the robber was Espinosa because his wallet was found on him. Not wanting
to involve Tores or the others, Angelo fled LA, eventually joining up
with Generation X.
(Generation X#21) - A year after his apparent death, signified by the
fact the burned bum had been buried in his place, Angelo decided he
needed to go back to make amends. He was joined by his Generation X team
member Chamber and Howard the Duck, who had given the unlikely duo a
lift to Bud's Bar. Keeping himself hidden, Skin watched as Chamber and
Howard caused a bar fight to attract Tores' attention. Before she could
show, Angelo ran off. Tores confronted Howard and Jonothon, wondering
what they wanted with her. The two friends were left dumbstruck. Some
time later, Tores visited "Angelo's" grave, leaving flowers at the site
while seemingly unaware that the elderly man sitting on a nearby bench
was actually a disguised Skin.
(Generation X#25 - BTS) - Through unrevealed ways, Tores was contacted by Emma Frost who proposed an unspecified deal.
(Generation X#25) - Annoyed with Tores' stance, Frost called Miguela on her way back to the Massachusetts Academy. A boastful Tores, playing some pool at Bud's Bar, spit back that they'd now be playing by her new rules, using her powers to destroy a cue ball before hanging up.
(Generation X#29 (fb) - BTS) - Tores allied herself with
Operation: Zero Tolerance, promising to deliver Angelo and Generation X
to them.
(Generation X#29
- BTS) - Visiting
Venice Beach,
Generation X
were enjoying
themselves
among the
weird and
outlandish
looking
residents
before going
to Skin's
cousin Gil's
house. The team
was not aware
they were being
monitored by
several
undercover Prime
Sentinels, who
had been
informed by
Skin's former
girlfriend Tores
that the mutants
would probably
convene at
Gil's.
(Generation
X#29) - After a
fun filled
evening,
feasting on
cereal, coke and
Beach Boy songs,
Generation X
woke up the next
morning to find
Torres and her
gang had barged
into Gil's place
to exact revenge
on Skin. Before
she could cut
his neck with
her knife,
Torres was
surprised by the
Prime Sentinels
who attacked
without warning
and blew up the
house. Synch and
Husk were
knocked out by
the explosion
and carried away
by their
teammates.
Tores, who
realized she was
a mutant when
the Prime
Sentinels
targeted her as
well, joined
them as they ran
off. Tores led
them into the
sewers, figuring
they'd be safe
there but the
Sentinels
relentlessly
continued their
pursuit.
(Generation X#31 - BTS) - While Generation X and Tores took on the Prime Sentinel battalion, Gil Espinosa was downstairs siphoning gas from all the cars to create a makeshift explosion.
(Generation
X#31) - Faced
by numerous
Prime
Sentinels,
Tores subconsciously
activated her
psionic
powers,
blasting one
of the cyborgs
with her
debilitating
spikes. Even
though Tores
realized all
it did was
annoy her
assailant, it
allowed her and
Skin to get to
temporary
safety. The
two former
lovers
prepared to
take the fight
to their foes,
when
Generation X
burst in to
join the
battle. After
some initial
success, with
Tores blasting
Sentinels left
and right, the
team was about
to get overrun.
In the end,
Gil saved the
day by
detonating the
improvised gasoline
explosive.
Synch was also
able to
protect Tores
and the others
using his
mutant aura.
(Generation X#0.5) - Skin
took Jubilee
and Husk back
to the LA
neighborhood
ran by Tores
to clear the
air. Even
though Angelo
did his best
to engage his
old lover in
conversation,
both were
stunned to see
the unexpected
return of
Lupo. The thug
explained he
was the one
responsible
for opening
fire on the
Figs,
indirectly
causing the
deaths of the
rival gang and
Gordo. Lupo
planned to
kill Angelo
for real, but
Husk saved
him. In the
end, Tores
used her
pionic powers
to completely
evaporate
Lupo. Already
distraught for
having taken a
life, she was
surprised by
the arrival of
Angelo
Espinosa's
mother (Gen X
kept
themselves
hidden). The
woman cursed
Tores for her
powers, but
when Miguela
tried to
explain her
powers weren't
black magic,
just something
she was born
with like
Angelo, Mrs.
Espinosa spat
at her feet to
show her
disgust,
before turning
away.

Miguela Tores' history is a bit of a mess, even though Larry Hama tried his best to clear up much of the confusion in Generation X#0.5, a 1998 freebee with Wizard#81. For all intents and purposes, Tores believed Angelo had died, there's no reason for a small time LA crimeboss to ally herself with Operation: Zero Tolerance. Add to that the fact that according to the flashbacks in Generation X#0.5 she was unconscious when Angelo's powers manifested themselves, so she didn't even know for sure he was a mutant... Also, she probably knew she was one herself, so why join forces with the killer cyborgs out to decimate your kind?
There is also the unexplained link between Emma Frost and Tores, seen in Generation X#25, Emma calls Tores to make sure she lays off. Presumably, she meant Angelo but why would the White Queen actively stir up trouble by confirming to a possible foe that Skin was still around? It would make far more sense for Emma to simply make Tores forget about the whole affair with a subtle, mental nudge.
