URSAA race
Classification: Semi-humanoid extraterrestrial race
Location/Base of Operations: Unspecified location on a
"traders' planet"
(it is unrevealed whether they are native to this world, and, if not, what
percentage of the total population is represented by the Ursaa on this world);
if the starting point on the map shown after they were picked
up by Karel indicates the location from which Karel picked up Bishop and
Deathbird, then they are at least active in "Badwu"?
Known Members: None identified
Affiliations: Chnitt race
Enemies: Lucas Bishop, Deathbird (Cal'syee Neramani),
Karel,
others unidentified
possibly the
Chnitt race
First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men#358 (August, 1998)
Powers/Abilities: The Ursaa did not demonstrate any
special abilities in their limited appearances. Their teeth look like they might
be able to do some damage.
They carried hand-held weapons that fired harpoon-like
projectiles -- apparently attached to a long cable that maintained their
connection to the gun -- able to pierce freighter hulls. They could also launch
explosives (or perhaps one of their harpoons caused Deathbird's ship's fuel tank
to explode). One of the Ursaa could be incapacitated by a single punch from an
(apparently) uncharged Lucas Bishop (athletic strength, experienced fighter).
Traits: The Ursaa are scavengers, traveling in packs, looting wreckages and selling prisoners to take to the Chnitt. According to Karel they are "a cowardly race." Where one group goes, a colony soon follows.
Type: Apparently bilaterally symmetric semi-humanoid bipeds
Eyes: Two (on head; glowing red color shown)
Fingers: Apparently three (plus an opposing
thumb)
Toes: Unrevealed (none had their feet shown)
Skin color: Orange
Average height: Unrevealed (they are roughly human-sized, and the one
Bishop punched seemed just a little smaller than him, so perhaps 6' tall?)
History:
(Uncanny X-Men#358 (fb) - BTS) - It is unrevealed whether the Ursaa originated
on the planet thus far only unidentified as a "traders' planet."
(Uncanny X-Men#358 (fb) - BTS) - The Ursaa sold prisoners they captured during their scavenging raids to the Chnitt.
(Uncanny X-Men#358) - A trio (at least) of Ursaa assaulted the Shi'ar Deathbird and the human mutant Lucas Bishop after their ship crashed on the traders' planet, shot down by the orbiting Chnitt mothership. The Ursaa blew up Deathbird's ship, then -- from close range -- fired a harpoon weapon, which lodged in Bishop's side. Nonetheless, Bishop punched out the Ursaa holding the weapon attached to the harpoon, while Deathbird fired on them with an energy blaster. Seeking allies to escape the traders' planet, Karel approached them in a air-cruiser, offering Bishop and Deathbird to "come...if you want to live." Pulling the harpoon from his side, Bishop accepted the offer, and Karel took them aboard and departed with them.
Comments: Created by Steve Seagle, Joseph Harris, Chris Bachalo, and Tim Townsend.
Ursa means "bear." Not sure whether that has any significance to this race at all.
