Powers/Abilities: Alpha could manifest a number of superhuman abilities, including superhuman strength and durability, energy projection, energy absorption, force-field projection, super-speed, flight, low-level telekinesis, matter manipulation, enhanced hearing, and x-ray vision. Initially, he could only manifest one of these abilities at a time but this limitation soon faded. Alpha's powers are linked to the fabric of the universe and continued to increase over time. At the height of his powers, he could fly thousands of miles per second and lift hundreds of tons. Most recently, he could fly at approximately 50 miles per hour and lift up to five tons. When used in concentrated form, Alpha's energies caused cancerous cells to form in living tissue.

History: (Amazing Spider-Man II#592/1) - The product of two disinterested, neglectful parents, Andy Maguire was a C-student at Midtown High. Never a member of any social group, he was content to be ignored by the rest of his fellow students, save for Chrissy Chen, who he had a crush on but was unwilling to risk even talking to. When he and his class went on a field trip to high-tech company Horizon Labs, Andy had to fake his father's signature on his permission slip to attend. There, Horizon scientist Peter Parker showed off his newest discovery - Parker Particles, a hyper-kinetic form of energy tied into the forces of universal expansion. When Parker's device malfunctioned, thanks to sabotage by Parker's jealous colleague Tiberius Stone, Andy knocked Chrissy out of the way of a bolt of energy, taking the brunt of it himself. As the damaged device fell towards both of them, Andy blasted it aside, having been granted super powers by the Parker Particles. While his parents threatened to sue the company, Horizon brought in Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Giant-Man, and the Beast to study Andy.  They determined that Andy was in no danger but had been granted a range of super powers. He could only use one at a time and they were steadily increasing in power. Horizon offered Andy a contract to serve as their super hero spokesman and the Maguires and their lawyer Joan Conway accepted, much to Andy's excitement. Parker designed a costume and superheroic ID for Maguire, who taped a promo for Horizon's new aPhone as Alpha. He returned to Midtown High to receive a hero's welcome and he "accidentally" gave popular student Mark Hunsacker a super-nudge while flirting with Chrissy. That night, while making out with Chrissy, she showed him the Alpha fan-website she'd designed. He made the mistake of reading the disparaging comments users had left on the site and left Chrissy to go prove he was a great super hero. Spider-Man found him and together they saved the inhabitants of a burning building, stopped an electronics robbery and battled the Looter. When Spider-Man received a call from the Fantastic Four, who were battling the Subterranean monster Giganto, he ordered Alpha to stay behind but Alpha immediately disobeyed and knocked out the rampaging creature with a single punch. As Alpha gloried in the attention he was getting, Spider-Man realized he'd created a monster...

(Amazing Spider-Man II#593) - Alpha left the FF and Spider-Man to handle the clean-up. The next day, he took Midtown High cheerleader Paula Lake home with him and they were getting better acquainted with each other when Chrissy Chen dropped by. Humiliated, she ran out of the house. Immediately afterwards, the Jackal and one of his Spiderzons (a mutated clone of the Jackal's late ally, Ana Soria) came to the Maguire house, where they quickly subdued Alpha, his parents, Joan Conway and Paula. The Jackal took Alpha and the others to his lair, an abandoned school in Brooklyn, where he bound Alpha in a white-noise helmet and Carbonadium shackles then harvested his genetic material to create the Alpha Males, a group of clones he intended to mate with the Spiderzons to produce a master race. Spider-Man tracked them down but the Jackal unleashed the Alpha Males on him, only to discover that Andy's powers hadn't altered his DNA, making the Alpha Males nothing but mindless clones of an ordinary teenager. The Jackal then used his equipment to try and drain Maguire's powers at the expense of the boy's life and ordered the Spiderzons to eat everyone else there. Spider-Man tried to inspire Andy to overcome the odds to save his family but Andy misinterpreted it, seeing his powers as the only thing that made his life worthwhile. He broke free of his restraints and destroyed the Alpha Males, prompting the Jackal to make all the clones there (himself included) self-destruct, leaving Alpha and the others covered in degenerated clone-goo but otherwise unharmed. Seeing the errors he'd made, Alpha hired Joan Conway as his personal agent/lawyer, had himself emancipated from his parents and moved to a Manhattan penthouse, where he hooked up with a purple-haired pop star. Spider-Man told Andy that if they kept working together, there'd be a spot for him on the Avengers. Andy accepted, unaware that Spider-Man was planning to take away his powers for good!

(Amazing Spider-Man II#594) - Bereft of parental constraints, Alpha became more popular than ever. He went on a world tour and landed a guest spot on "the Vampire Diaries." His powers also kept growing and soon he was able to use multiple powers at once. He also left Midtown High and got a private tutor. While he was in Japan, Alpha got a call from Parker, who reminded him that he'd missed his scheduled power check-up; Alpha brushed him off. When the planet-harvesting colossus Terminus attacked New York, Spider-Man called in Alpha at Captain America and the Avengers' urging. Alpha flew from Tokyo to New York in a matter of moments and soon began taking on the creature single-handedly. Alpha recklessly blasted him with energy but Terminus blocked the blast with his lance, knocking out the power of every commercial aircraft in a ten-mile radius. Alpha continued to heedlessly battle Terminus as the other Avengers scrambled to save the plummeting airplanes. Captain America remained behind to supervise and had Thor pull him out of the battle once Terminus was down to prevent further danger to civilians. Alpha took off without even acknowledging the disaster he'd nearly caused. Later, he reported to Horizon Labs, where Spider-Man was "filling in" for Peter Parker. He had subjected Alpha to a device that he'd incorporated the technology from Terminus' lance into, draining away most of the boy's powers. He explained that Andy hadn't been worthy of them. Now largely powerless, he abandoned his Alpha identity, returned to his parents and went back to Midtown High, where he was soundly mocked.  However, he still retained a small fraction of his old power, which he inadvertently used to crush his locker door...

(Alpha: Big Time I#1 (fb)) - Andy's parents separated and his mother took him to live with her mother Mona in Pittsburgh. At the John Forbes High School cafeteria, the only students who could tolerate his presence were obese science fiction nerd Duncan Kilgore and hostile, pierced Susan "Soupcan" Rice. He maintained a relationship with Horizon Labs, who flew him to New York City every few weeks to visit his father and have his powers tested by Peter Parker.

(Alpha: Big Time I#1) - After another miserable day at school, Andy made a trip to Horizon Labs, where "Peter Parker" (with a new attitude thanks to his psyche having been usurped by that of Otto Octavius) was waiting for him. After subjecting him to a battery of tests, Parker claimed that Andy had acted responsibly enough to become Alpha again although, in fact, he only wanted to use Andy as a test subject so that he could master Parker Particles himself. Andy agreed and Parker put him through a painful procedure that restored his superhuman abilities at 10% of their peak power. The grateful Alpha flew home to Pittsburgh in a matter of minutes and saw a fire raging in the city below. Generating an energy mask to hide his identity, he absorbed the heat of the burning building, extinguishing the fire. Flying off, he saw a mugging in progress and intervened, introducing himself as "Beta." He shattered the mugger's knife and when the criminal pulled a gun on him, Alpha disintegrated the bullet. Tiring of the one-sided fight, Alpha blasted the thief with energy, crushing his skull.

(Alpha: Big Time I#2) - Alpha flew both the mugger's traumatized victim and the stricken mugger to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. While the cops gave him a pass on injuring the mugger, Andy went to the Eat a Lot restaurant to brood and was surprised to see that Soupcan was his waitress. He ordered a coffee, all the while noticing for the first time how attractive Soupcan was but when he got a text from his mother, he raced home without paying for it. He arrived there in a panic, only to find that she'd only wanted him to pick up cereal and hadn't noticed that he'd been out all night. His grandmother explained that his mother was going through a lot right now and that everything would be fine but warned that if he stayed out all night again, she'd break his kneecaps. The next day, Andy endured another excruciating day of school and a one-sided science fiction conversation with Kilgore then bumped into Soupcan, who chewed him out for stiffing her on the bill. After he expressed his angst a little, however, she cut him some slack, and merely asked that he pay her later. Later, Alpha, lost in thought, saw an explosion at a steel mill. There, he found an elemental creature (unbeknownst to him, sent by Pittsburgh mobster Boss Cohen) trashing the place. It absorbed his energy blasts but when he dumped a giant cauldron of molten metal on it, it was destroyed. Thinking that Parker would take away his powers for attacking the mugger, he flew to Horizon Labs but in their waiting room, he saw a newspaper article that mentioned the incident and learned that the mugger had survived. After saying a quick and confusing hello to Parker, he flew back to Pittsburgh, where he visited the mugger in the hospital. He apologized to the comatose criminal, only for him to suddenly awaken and proclaim that "Alpha...must...suffer!"

(Alpha: Big Time I#3) - The mugger collapsed back into bed and Alpha left. Spider-Man tracked him down and recruited him for some Avengers business, which mostly involved Alpha standing in the middle of the desert holding up a giant boulder. Spider-Man returned him home but as he headed up to bed, he heard Soupcan crying out for help. He flew to the Eat a Lot, which was on fire, and saved her from the flames. Despite the energy mask, she recognized him immediately. Two days later, he had another session with Parker, who determined that Andy had developed super-senses as well. Andy also asked him for some advice but Parker brushed him off. Back in Pittsburgh, Andy flew over the city and extended his senses, overloading them. Anguishing about all of the suffering he couldn't stop, he plummeted to the ground until his senses picked up Soupcan talking about how cute he was. Elated, he pulled out of his dive and shot through the city. After another hospital visit to the comatose mugger, he stopped another suspicious fire, unknowingly making him Boss Cohen's next target.

(Alpha: Big Time I#4) - Alpha battled the Miller, an embittered engineer with a matter-transmuting hammer. Although the Miller got a few shots in with his hammer, Alpha played possum, allowing him to drag the Miller into the sky, where he was hit by a lightning bolt thanks to Thor. Thor gave him a little advice, telling him that although adventure and mead and women were important, the lives he saved were more important. Andy took off for school, arriving late and running into Principal Markazenie, who assumed that Andy smelled like smoke because he'd been smoking and gave him detention. Later, Andy tried to tell Soupcan how he felt about her but she shot him down. Embarrassed, Andy took off when he heard calls for help coming from the hospital. There, he found that the mugger had mutated into Zeta, a bio-mass absorbing monster who had consumed four hundred people in the hospital and was still growing. Hearing his mother cry out (as Boss Cohen's men had been tailing him and found his home), he abandoned the battle and raced home, only to find it engulfed in flames...

(Alpha: Big Time I#5) - Andy absorbed the fire and found his mother and grandmother, the former of whom wasn't breathing. He revived her with a jolt of energy and resolved to get Boss Cohen as soon as he finished with Zeta. He flew to New York, snatched up Spider-Man from a battle with the Constrictor and flew the indignant arachnid to Pittsburgh to help him battle Zeta. After Spider-Man failed to beat it and Alpha's attempts to lift it into the river only gave it more energy, Spider-Man prompted Alpha to use his x-ray vision to look inside it. When Andy described seeing cancerous cells, Spider-Man had him use his energy blasts to target only those cells, leaving the healthy ones unharmed. Soon, all of Zeta's victims were freed and unharmed but Zeta himself slipped away. Alpha flew off to visit his mother in the motel she was staying at, where she expressed gratitude towards him - the first emotion she'd shown him in some time. He then went to see Soupcan at the burned-out Eat a Lot. They shared a brief moment, which was rudely interrupted when one of Boss Cohen's men shot at her. Alpha destroyed the bullet, clocked the gunman and tried, unsuccessfully, to comfort the traumatized Soupcan. He tracked down Boss Cohen and threatened to take him down but Cohen offered him a deal - he'd leave Alpha and his family alone if Alpha stuck to fighting crime that didn't cost Cohen money. If Alpha reneged, he'd release a picture of Alpha's confrontation with the mugger to the press. Alpha accepted. Returning to school, he befriended Kilgore but Soupcan was still terrified to be around him. Needing to clear his head, Alpha took flight...

(Young Avengers II#11) - When the Young Avengers put out a call to teen heroes to battle the evil entity Mother, the call eventually reached Spider-Girl, who contacted Alpha.

(Young Avengers II#12-13 - BTS) - Alpha joined with dozens of other teen heroes in battling Mother's forces in Central Park. The heroes ultimately emerged victorious.

Comments: Created by Dan Slott, Humberto Ramos and Victor Olazaba.

Alpha was created as part of Spider-Man's 50th anniversary celebration - as such, Andy's story initially parallels Amazing Fantasy #15 but replaces the decent, well-raised Peter Parker with the aimless, neglected Andy Maguire. It's nice to see that the whole "flawed protege" thing didn't produce a supervillain, as it so often does but a callous jerk of a super hero. Fans didn't really warm to him but he's clearly supposed to be unlikeable. I'm sure he'll turn up again, eventually, and in fact [TWELVE-PAGE PITCH FOR ALPHA/MANIA TEAM-UP REMOVED].

How does Spider-Girl have Andy's number? They probably had an off-panel team-up and he gave her his number for non-super-heroic purposes and she never called.

Andy Maguire's name was presumably derived from the names of big-screen Spider-Man portrayers Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Likewise, Joan Conway is probably named after longtime Spider-scribe Gerry Conway.

So, uh, Andy probably gave his mom cancer, huh?

You know what word looks weird when you type it over and over again? Alpha. Alpha Alpha Alpha.

Alice Maguire

(Amazing Spider-Man II#692/1) - Alice Maguire lived in Forest Hills, Queens with her husband Ray and their aimless son Andy, who they were both somewhat neglectful of. They were both oblivious to his requests for a signed field trip permission slip, prompting him to forge it but when an accident at the field trip endowed Andy with super powers, they came down to Horizon Labs with their lawyer Joan Conway to threaten legal action. They were placated when Horizon boss Max Modell offered Andy a job as Alpha, Horizon's new super-spokesman. They soon became concerned that they weren't seeing enough money from the arrangement.

(Amazing Spider-Man II#693) -  Alice and Ray let Chrissy Chen into their home. Joan recognized her as the girl who ran Alpha's website and all were apparently unaware that Andy was upstairs getting better acquainted with another girl, Paula Lake. After she stormed out, another girl, this one accompanied by her father, came to see Alpha. As the Maguires fretted about their son's lifestyle, the duo soon revealed themselves as the Jackal and one of his Spiderzon clones. They abducted all three Maguires, Joan, and Paula and took them to an abandoned school in Brooklyn. They were eventually rescued by Spider-Man. The Maguires apologized to their son and suggested that he give up super heroics. Instead, he promptly hired Joan as his own lawyer and emancipated himself from his parents.

(Amazing Spider-Man II#694) - Ray and Alice tried to call Andy's new penthouse to make amends but he didn't reply. Later, after Spider-Man drained away most of his powers, the humbled Andy returned to live with his parents.

(Alpha: Big Time #1 (fb) ) - In the wake of the Alpha situation, the Maguires divorced; Alice and Andy moved to Pittsburgh to live with her mother, Mona.

(Alpha: Big Time #2) - Alice called Andy to ask him to pick him up some cereal. He misinterpreted it and rushed home, thinking there was a problem. Although disappointed at the lack of cereal, she was unconcerned about Andy having been out all night, as she was still stuck in a depressive haze after her divorce.

(Alpha: Big Time #4) - Alice and Mona watched Alpha fight Zeta on TV. Mona thought it was Andy but Alice insisted that he'd lost his powers. Just then, two of Boss Cohen's men came by. They assaulted both women and set the house on fire.

(Alpha: Big Time #5) - Andy rescued Mona and Alice from the burning house but Alice had inhaled too much smoke and stopped breathing. Andy revived her with a concentrated burst of energy. Later, the trio moved into a motel. The recovering Alice didn't want Andy going after Cohen. He relented, and went to see his friend Soupcan instead.

Chrissy Chen

(Amazing Spider-Man II#692/1) - A student at Midtown High and a fan of super heroes, Chrissy Chen went on a field trip to Horizon Labs and was nearly struck by an errant bolt of Parker Particles before fellow student Andy Maguire pushed her out of the way, taking the brunt of the blast himself. He then saved her from a piece of falling equipment with his newfound powers. A week later, after Andy had become the super hero Alpha, Chrissy had already ordered six Alpha t-shirts from Horizon. When he came back to school, he invited her back to his place that night. That night, they took a break from making out to look at Alpha's website, which Chrissy had designed for him. Seeing negative comments posted about himself, Alpha flew off, leaving Chrissy in the lurch.

(Amazing Spider-Man II#693) - Chrissy came by to see Andy again but instead found him locking lips with Midtown cheerleader Paula Lake. Humiliated, she stormed out.

(Amazing Spider-Man II#694) - As Paula and her boyfriend Mark argued about her encounter with Andy, Chrissy dismissed them.

Paula Lake

(Amazing Spider-Man II#692/1) - Head cheerleader at Midtown High, Paula Lake dated new Midtown student Mark Hunsacker. She went on a class field trip to Horizon Labs and witnessed Andy Maguire acquiring super powers in an accident. Later, she looked on as Andy, now the super hero Alpha, returned to Midtown.

(Amazing Spider-Man II#693) - Invited to the Maguire house by Alpha, Paula couldn't resist. Unfortunately, their makeout session was interrupted first by an angry Chrissy Chen, Alpha's prior conquest, and then by the deranged Jackal and his cloned Spiderzon. They captured Paula, Andy and his family, and their lawyer Joan Conway and took them to the Jackal's lair in an abandoned Brooklyn school. Eventually, Spider-Man and Alpha defeated the Jackal and his clones but when Paula tried to express her gratitude, Alpha brushed her off to talk to Joan about his career.

(Amazing Spider-Man II#694) - Paula tried to justify her dalliance with Alpha to Mark, who was not having it.

--Amazing Spider-Man II#692/1 (692/1, 693, 694

Mark Hunsacker

(Amazing Spider-Man II#692/1) - Newly transferred to Midtown High, football player Mark Hunsacker was already dating head cheerleader Paula Lake. He went on a class field trip to Horizon Labs, where he accidentally knocked fellow student Andy Maguire over. Later, he witnessed Andy Maguire acquiring super powers in an accident. The next week, Andy, now the super hero Alpha, not-so-accidentally knocked Mark over and thanks to Andy's strength, he went flying.

(Amazing Spider-Man II#694) - Paula tried to justify her dalliance with Alpha to Mark, who was not having it.

--Amazing Spider-Man II#692/1 (692/1, 694

Joan Conway

(Amazing Spider-Man II#692/1) - Ray and Alice Maguire hired Joan Conway to represent them against Horizon Labs when their son Andy gained superpowers during a haywire Horizon demonstration. When Horizon head Max Modell suggested making Andy their super-powered spokesman Alpha, the financial compensation for which would outweigh that of a settlement, Joan and the Maguires agreed.

(Amazing Spider-Man II#693) - Joan met with the Maguires at their home in Queens to discuss a move to Manhattan. There, she noted the steady stream of girls going to see Andy and suggested that they might have to worry about paternity suits. Unfortunately, the latest girl was one of the cloned Spiderzons, chaperoned by her creator, the Jackal, who abducted the Maguires, Joan and Andy's latest dalliance, Paula Lake. Taken to an abandoned Brooklyn school, they were all eventually rescued by Spider-Man and Alpha. Afterwards, Alpha brushed past the others to talk to Joan about better exploiting his brand. Before long, she'd legally emancipated him from his parents

(Amazing Spider-Man II#694) - Conway helped make Alpha a media sensation, taking him on a worldwide press tour that included a stop in Tokyo. When he lost most of his powers however, he no longer required her services.

Duncan Kilgore

(Alpha: Big Time #1) - Obese, orthodontic headgear-wearing nerd Duncan Kilgore was one of the only students at John Forbes High School who would tolerate Andy Maguire's presence in the school cafeteria. Andy was totally oblivious to his discussion of the movie Prometheus.

(Alpha: Big Time #2) - The next day, Kilgore continued talking about Prometheus but noticed that Andy was "off." When Andy told him that he was going through a situation and didn't have anyone to talk to, Kilgore told him they could talk but Andy brushed him off and left.

(Alpha: Big Time #5) - After Andy saved the city from the monstrous Zeta, he saw Kilgore at school again, still talking about Prometheus. Andy admitted that he was Alpha, which Kilgore already knew, and asked Kilgore if he wanted to be his confidant, which Kilgore thought he already was. He also insisted that Andy wasn't lame and that he was "big time."

Mr. Markazenie

(Alpha: Big Time #1) - The principal at John Forbes High School, Mr. Markazenie came across new student Andy Maguire being bullied in the hallway. He reassured the boy that he was a good kid and told him that Horizon Labs had sent for him.

(Alpha: Big Time #4) - Mr. Markazenie caught a smoky Andy coming in to school late. Assuming that he'd been smoking, Markazenie gave him detention.
