History:
(Giant-Size Spider-Man I#5/1 (fb)) - Edmond Arnstead
completed a biochemistry degree after college and married Dorothy. He
gained a loan to start up his own firm, which expanded, and he moved
from science into administration. But an economic
recession hit Arnstead Chemical Co. hard and he was forced to close and
declare bankruptcy. This impacted him psychologically.
(Giant-Size Spider-Man I#5/1 (fb) - BTS) - Edmond
read about the Man-Thing in a newspaper.
(Giant-Size Spider-Man I#5/1) - Several months later, deeply impacted by
financial loss, he felt he was a failure and became suicidal. Secretly
observed by Man-Thing, Edmond was ready to kill himself by drowning in
a swamp and make it appear like an accident so that his wife and
daughter could collect the insurance. A crocodile was about to grab
Edmond, but Man-Thing defended Edmond and lurched forward, killing the
crocodile. Thrown out of his depressed state, he saw Man-Thing as a
potential
goldmine if he could bring it to civilization and so he gave chase,
tracking it through the swamp. Unsure how to tackle the creature,
Edmond was instead amazed to see swamp reptiles moving in the same
direction (secretly summoned by the nefarious Lizard). He followed
Man-Thing's tracks and came across a fight between Man-Thing,
Spider-Man and the Lizard. Martha Connors sought help recreating the
antidote to her husband's transformation into the Lizard and Edmond
responded, although a little flustered, mixing chemicals in the Connors
lab. He carried the completed antidote out in a test tube, but tripped
and berated himself. Spider-Man still caught it and returned the Lizard
to human form. Still surprised, Edmond felt his life had been changed
and he was ready to begin anew.
