History:
(My Love II#7/1 (fb) - BTS) - Valerie Van Dyne was a
member of the social register Van Dyne family, but grew disillusioned
and bored with the inane gossip and pointless wealthy diversions.
(My Love II#7/1) - At a party she was hosting,
Valerie was frustrated and bored at the meaningless social whirl of the
rich set. The next day, she canceled a yacht date and tried to find
meaning in the arts, attending theater and museums, but felt lonely. By
chance, she passed where Larry Arthur was giving piano lessons and,
captivated by his looks, waited her turn. Intrigued by him, Valerie
took up more piano lessons and was an apt pupil, yet Larry was also
attracted to her and they were soon engaged. She remained defiant when
her wealthy friends questioned his social standing. Valerie and Larry
soon wed, although she briefly questioned if she'd been rash. The
honeymoon took them driving across the USA over several months with
Larry paying his way by giving piano lessons along the way. They passed
Valerie's old country club and she saw the same faces; she was sure
then that she'd made the right choice in following her heart.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee (writer), John Buscema (pencils), Dick Ayers (inks).
She's of the wealthy Van Dyne socialite family?
Sounds like
she might be related to Janet Van Dyne (the Wasp). Valerie appeared in
1970, seven years after Janet Van Dyne's introduction in Tales to
Astonish. It's easy to ASSume that Stan Lee had some connection in mind
at the time.
This story was later reprinted in My Love II#22 and
#37 (same series).
These romance stories often had the flavor of the time in which they were written, and nothing else to tie them into Marvel's sliding timescale. As such, it's likely that the stories took place at the time of publication rather than being part of the sliding timescale.
