History: (Punisher War Journal II#3 (fb)) - During US marine Frank Castle's basic training, the marines were visited by Captain America. While there, Captain America ordered Frank Castle to hit him with all he had, taunting that the marines could be scared of a "little old ranger." Castle declined, explaining that he didn't think he could but Captain America repeated his order and told Castle to pretend his life depended on it. Captain America then knocked Castle to the ground then announced that he was only joking with Castle, whom he called "ma'am." Cap then reminded the other marines that "Charlie" was out there waiting for them and that he wasn't going to pull any punches. Grabbing Castle by the shirt, Captain America asked how he could be expected to train marines in hand-to-hand combat if they wouldn't lay hands on him then asked if Castle was a chicken. He then ordered Castle to explain to the other marines how Castle being too chicken to let Cap train him translated into him turning into a chicken when facing "Charlie." Castle replied that he had no problem going after "Charlie" but Cap threw Castle to the ground, claiming that it was great that Castle respected the Captain America uniform but warned that if Castle couldn't get past the uniform to attack him, then Cap couldn't turn him into the killing machine the others needed him to be. He then instructed Castle to use his imagination to get to wherever he needed to be to get himself to fight back. When Castle stayed on the ground, Captain America turned around, announced the training attempt as a total waste of time and dismissed Castle. The next day, after Castle was beaten by his fellow marines for being weak, Captain America returned to teach hand-to-hand combat to someone else, giving each of the marines-in-training an American flag pin before leaving for Fort Dix.

Comments: Created by Matt Fraction and Ariel Olivetti.

Not much was revealed about the pre-modern era Captain America. He was active during Frank Castle marine basic training, which would have been prior to Steve Rogers being unfrozen but after Jeff Mace had retired as Captain America. It seemed as if he was likely a military man that was ordered to dress up as the actual Captain America to go around training new recruits and equally likely was not even an active super hero. His hair color was also impossible to determine, as he was never without his helm on.
