History:
(Spidey Super Stories#17/2) - Dr. Strange's origins are unrevealed. Dr. Strange attended
the bicentennial celebrations at Electric Company studios alongside
other heroes. He helped Iceman add extra frosting to the giant birthday
cake. He overheard Captain America tell Spider-Man that he wished he
could visit notable patriots from the American Revolution 200 years
earlier. Strange offered to send them back in time using magic and
the two eagerly took up the offer. Strange watched via a small time
portal as Captain America and Spider-Man thwarted the time-traveling
tyrant Kang's efforts to disrupt the Boston Tea Party, and pulled the
heroes back to the present time. However, Strange's portal revealed
further interference by Kang against revolutionary Paul Revere and he
sent the duo back. Seeing Kang continue his
time-meddling, Strange then sent the two heroes to Boston, where they ended
Kang's efforts. Strange allowed the two heroes to watch the signing of
the American Declaration of Independence before pulling them back to the present
(although they hauled Kang back with them as well).
Comments: Created by Jim Salicrup (writer), Win Mortimer (pencils), Mike Esposito & Tony Mortellaro (inks).
Physical stats are taken from the Earth-616 version, as they look very much alike.
Along with many other characters, Strange appeared on
the single-color back cover advert of Spidey Super Stories#52, showing
that he too read Spidey Super Stories.
Strange doesn't display any other magic tricks, just a time spell, and he seems to disappear when Kang arrives in the heroes' present. This Strange could just as easily have been Immortus disguised, sending heroes to thwart his rival Kang's plans. (Or maybe he has the Time Infinity Gem embedded in the amulet on his collar?)
There certainly seems to be more to Dr. Strange,
including his magical clothing items, but I've kept the profile to what
was revealed in the story.
