History:
(Hercules,
Prince of Power: Full Circle - A Marvel Graphic Novel (fb) - BTS) - At
some point, Mallax became long-lasting friends with the pirate Lucynda
Thrust.
(Hercules, Prince of Power: Full
Circle - A Marvel Graphic Novel (fb) - BTS) - Mallax Fortnite was made the
military governor of a planet conquered by the forces of Emperor
Arimathes. He believed that the Emperor was merely securing the borders
of their own system. However, when Arimathes' aggressions began to
extend beyond, to other star systems, he spoke out in opposition.
(Hercules,
Prince of Power: Full Circle - A Marvel Graphic Novel (fb) - BTS) -
Alongside 200 of his loyal subordinates, Mallax Fortnite was imprisoned
in the stasis beds -- where he remained alert but but without voluntary
motor ability
below the neck (he could still breathe, but could not move his skeletal
muscles) -- below Port Anteris, Wilamean for opposing Emperor
Arimathes' policies.
(Hercules, Prince of
Power: Full Circle - A Marvel Graphic Novel) - When Hercules and his
allies Recorder #417 and Skyppi the Skrull were imprisoned in the
stasis beds, Mallax introduced himself, explained how he had gotten
there, and shared Arimathes' plans to conquer the neighboring Omacron
system. As he tried to explain to Hercules that it was futile to try to
escape the stasis beds, he was disturbed to see the arrival of the
Queen Mother (Layana Sweetwater) in the stasis chamber.
In order to have a private conversation with Hercules, the Queen Mother
activated a device that neuro-neutralized everyone else present. After
she departed and released the neuro-neutralization, Mallax asked what
had possessed the Queen Mother to visit the lowly stasis chamber, but
Hercules was to disturbed by learning of the nature of his son,
Arimathes, to explain things initially.
Soon
after, when Igwanus arrived to give the prisoners their weekly Gruel-X
nutrient injections, Hercules convinced Igwanus to free him,
Recorder, Skyppi, and Mallax. Though they lacked the time to free
the others (and needed to have only a small group for their plan to
work) so as to avoid detection by the palace guards, Mallax swore to
his friends they would return and free them all. Noting the need for a
techno who could hotwire the hyperdrive systems to escape the planet,
Mallax asked Hercules and the others to wait a few minutes while he
recruited just such a person.
(Hercules,
Prince of Power: Full Circle - A Marvel Graphic Novel (fb) - BTS) -
Mallax located and freed Lucynda Thrust, and headed back to Hercules
and the others.
(Hercules,
Prince of Power: Full Circle - A Marvel Graphic Novel) - When Mallax
returned and introduced Lucynda as his old pirate friend and the best
starship thief in the galaxy, both were shocked to see the Emperor
Mother present, but "she" quickly revealed herself to be a transformed
Skyppi the Skrull.
After the group agreed to
follow a plan, Mallax and the others were allowed out as prisoners
under the Queen Mother's care.
(Hercules, Prince of Power: Full Circle - A Marvel Graphic Novel (fb) - BTS) - The group boarded one of Arimathes' ships.
(Hercules,
Prince of Power: Full Circle - A Marvel Graphic Novel) - As Lucynda
bypassed the controls, Mallax was impressed as Hercules took out a trio
of Arimathes' troops with a single punch.
As they reached orbit, Mallax noted that the navigational computer had
the co-ordinates to a safe port to which they could fly as soon as they
could break formation; however, Mallax and the others were surprised
when Hercules instead revealed they were not going to escape but rather
confront Arimathes and stop the assault on the Omacron system.
After Lucynda forced one of their captured trroops to reveal the
fleet's communication codes and Skyppi posed as Arimathes and ordered
the fleet to stop, Fortnite -- noting that if this plan failed that
they were all dead -- then established a ship-to-ship communication
that allowed Hercules to challenge Arimathes to single combat with the throne as the prize.
Arimathes accepted, and the group landed their craft on a nearby planetoid and awaited Arimathes' arrival.
When Hercules, who was seeking to not only defeat Arimathes but to
teach him a lesson in humility, donned a blindfold for the combat,
Mallax told Lucynda he hoped Hercules knew what he was doing. When
Arimathes seemed to be getting the better of Hercules, Mallax advised
the others they needed to make a break for it because they were going
to be killed once Hercules was finished; however, Skyppi countered that
the space armada would blast them to vapors as soon as they tried to
lift off. Ultimately, he watched as Hercules ultimately kept Arimathes
talking to determine his location and knock him out; when
Arimathes recovered, accepted that he had been fed lies about Hercules
by his mother, and asked Hercules to teach him, Hercules proclaimed
Arimathes a new emperor.
(Hercules,
Prince of Power: Full Circle - A Marvel Graphic Novel (fb) - BTS) - In
the ensuing days, the stasis chambers were emptied of political
prisoners.
Arimathes gave prominent political
appointments to all those who had aided Hercules, including making
Mallax Minister of Defense.
(Hercules,
Prince of Power: Full Circle - A Marvel Graphic Novel) - Mallax prepared to report to his new position.
Comments: Created by Bob Layton.
On page 38, after the Emperor Mother has left, the Omniscient Narrative
speaks of "the weeks that follow (as) the imperial army prepares to
launch its attack
against the neighboring Omacron system!" However, on page 41, Igwanus
visits his "pookies" to give them each their "weekly nutrient injection"
and first encounters Hercules, which implies that Hercules and his friends could only have
been trapped in the stasis chamber for no more than a week. This
contradiction in how much time Herc spent as a prisoner is a mistake
made by writer Bob Layton and I'm not sure how it should be handled.
--Donald Campbell
I guess one possibility is that they were there longer
and that there are other caretakers besides Igwanus, which would mean
that he may not have encountered Hercules in his first week
there...either that or it was just the first week there, and the
narrative was in error (or perhaps the narrators definition of a week
was different than Igwanus', based on different solar cycles).
I don't even want to get it into the reality of waste disposal...
