History:
(Thunderbolts II#156 (fb) - BTS) - Gothenvald, a
German baron, had delved deeply into the occult. In 1911, just as an
alliance of duchies began storming his castle, Gothenvald magically
displaced it and the mountain it was built on, as well as all the
Baron's soldiers inside, and they vanished from the real world as they
traversed magical dimensions. It took many decades before
the Baron found his way back to his homeland and they reappeared in the
modern era near Stuttgart, Germany, but all inside had been corrupted
and
enhanced by magic during their journeys, taking on zombie-like
appearances. Gothenvald had also gathered various supernatural beings
as guards. Outside, any law enforcement sent to
investigate the newly returned castle was repelled in critical
condition. Months passed as international agencies declined helping
until the Cage's Thunderbolts were assigned. Meanwhile, the imposing
Castle Gothenvald developed a reputations as being haunted.
(Thunderbolts II#156) - Satana joined Cage's
Thunderbolts team as occultist and magic adviser, and they immediately teleported outside the
castle. Escaping supernatural banshee-like Dirae, the Thunderbolts
rushed into the castle, only to be attacked and overwhelmed by the
Baron's soldiers and other supernatural beings, empowered by advanced
magic.
(Thunderbolts II#157) - Satana used the
energy-depleting spell, the magic-consuming Flame of Animus Infernus,
to eliminate the supernatural assault. She identified Baron Gothenvald
was steering the attack from the tallest turret and that he had to be
separated from the castle to stop further attacks. The Thunderbolts
reached the Baron in his "wheelhouse," where Gothenvald set loose the
Incarsicus, which shrouded the Thunderbolts in personal nightmares;
Satana's timely intervention saved them. Gothenvald fled into magical
dimensions, taking his
castle with him and expelling the Thunderbolts. Gothenvald vowed to
return now that he had identified his way home.
