History:
(Avengers VI#9 (fb) - BTS) - Hecla came from a dimension with a
civilization full of miners and woodcutters. At some point, a creature
called Yod appeared, becoming the dimension's newest ruler and
demanding nothing but fealty, taking all of the civilization's industry
and resources, and forcing Hecla and others to farm the muckpits for
food. When Yod demanded tribute from Hecla's family, his wife and son
refused and were killed.
(Avengers
VI#9) - Hecla was digging into the muckpits of his alien world for
community food when he was shocked to see Thor immersed in the vicious
fields. Despite being somewhat skeptical when Thor referred to herself
as a god, Hecla nonetheless helped the other workers pull Thor from the
slime since Thor seemed to want to locate her hammer quite urgently.
After freeing Thor, Hecla sat down for a few moments to rest,
explaining how his race was not curious by rule when Thor questioned
how the other farmers could go on with their work despite having just
seen a stranger in their midst. Hecla then introduced himself and
listened intently as Thor explained how she had arrived in Hecla's
dimension. Continuing to think Thor delusional, Hecla still agreed to
help her find a way to return to her own dimensional, providing her
food and shelter in the meantime. While Thor slept, Hecla packed a bag
of rations and prepared for their journey towards a legendary artifact
that could potentially help Thor traverse back to Earth. He also
constructed Thor a reproduction hammer since she had lost her true
hammer, Mjolnir. The next day, Hecla led Thor towards a mountain range,
reminding her to focus not on the distance to be conquered but on the
distance already won. Remarking that his wife used to say that, Thor
deduced that Hecla's wife was dead and offered her sympathies, both for
Hecla's wife and the son Hecla also mentioned when he explained how his
family was killed when they refused to offer tribute to the dimension's
newest ruler. As their journey progressed, Hecla befriended Thor and
the two shared stories of Thor's Earth and Asgard dimensions, taking an
entire day for Thor to explain to Hecla how the game of cricket worked.
Revealing a legend that the device that could return Thor to Earth was
built by one of Hecla's race for Yod, who was also trapped in Hecla's
dimension, Hecla led Thor nearer to the legendary transportation device
that was foretold to be able to send a person back to its perceived
home when the person was exposed to the device. When they grew close,
the duo was attacked by a group of crystalline monsters that Hecla was
unfamiliar with. Yelling for Thor to save herself, Hecla attempted to
hold off the two "crystal monsters" and injured his arm in the process,
prompting Thor to display her power by grabbing one of the monsters by
the tail and slamming it into the other monster, killing them both on
their own crystalline bodies. An amazed Hecla asked how Thor could do
that and Thor reminded him that she was a god before stopping to tend
to Hecla's injured arm. Thinking that he had made a lifelong friend in
Thor, Hecla then led her to the mountains where Yod resided. Thor asked
Hecla to stay close but, terrified of Yod, Hecla tried to run for it,
drawing attention to himself and making himself a target for a
lightning bolt meant to strike him dead. Hecla was rescued by Thor, who
harnessed the lightning and hurled into the mountain, creating an
opening inside. Finding no legendary device inside, Hecla and Thor
found some sort of guardian, who revealed itself to be Yod. While Thor
leapt into battle against Yod, Hecla tried to stay out of the way, only
to find a gun-like device on the wall. Thinking it was the legendary
device he had spoke of, Hecla grabbed it and tossed it to Thor, only to
be struck by one of Yod's lightning bolts through the chest. Rushing to
Hecla, Thor asked Hecla to stay strong but Hecla, aware he was dying,
told Thor to use the last remaining charge on the gun to save herself
and her friends by transporting herself home. Thor instead used the
transport gun on Hecla, sending him to his own perceived home. Thor
then used the hammer Hecla had constructed for her and grabbed the orb
Yod had been guarding, smashing the two together to incinerate Yod. As
Thor then sat, wondering how she would get back to Earth, Hecla awoke
in a field of red, where he reunited with his lost family and thought
about his friendship with Thor and how she could have saved herself and
didn't.
Comments: Created by Mark Waid and Mike del Mundo.
Hecla mentions "our children" in his internal
monologue, suggesting that he may have unidentified children but he
also very well could have been referring to the children of his race
and not himself specifically.
