History:
(Black Axe#4 (fb)) - Horem recklessly took on the
highly paid job from nobleman Irudef to rob Amentah's tomb of a pair of
powerful gauntlets; however, Irudef had also secretly hired mercenary
Black Axe
to keep an eye on Horem. The thief was surprised to find the tomb's
burial
chamber virtually empty. Seeing the gauntlets, Horem instead tried them
on
and was overwhelmed by the power they granted. Black Axe appeared and
demanded he turn them over, but Horem instead attacked, the gloves
increasing his muscle mass with every strike coupled with rising
euphoria. Black Axe warned Horem of their true nature - the gauntlets
were ancient suicide war weapons that increased strength but fed on the
person's life-force, leaving the wearer with a lingering malformed
death. Seeing Horem's head withering away, Black Axe considered it
merciful to kill him using his specialized axe. The mercenary then used
the gauntlets to escape the tomb.
Comments: Created by Simon Jowett (writer), Art Nichols (pencils) & Rod Ramos (inks).
Presumably Amentah was meant to reappear, maybe with a Lemurian connection, but the title was canceled before the writer had the opportunity.
Profile by Grendel Prime.
CLARIFICATIONS
:
Horem has no known connections to:
Amentah served as supreme advisor to three pharaohs
and was considered almost equal in their power. Legend had it that he
emerged naked from the desert bringing ancient wisdom and terrible war
weapons. Amentah used power-inducing gauntlets to slowly kill two
would-be assassins in front of his secretary Irudef so that he would
know his place. Eventually, for unrevealed reasons, Amentah faked his
death with a false burial using an escape hatch built into his tomb.
In the modern era, Black Axe considered the tomb's statues of Osiris
(god of death
and rebirth) and Isis (rescuing wife) to be clues to Amentah's real
nature and that he may still exist...
--Black Axe#4
Irudef was the secretary to Amentah, who ordered that
Irudef witness the secret and brutal execution of two would-be
assassins using strength-enhancing gauntlets. With Amentah's eventual
apparent passing, Irudef sought the gauntlets for himself and
surreptitiously copied
the plans to Amentah's tomb, later hiring the thief Horem to steal the
gauntlets from the tomb, but also retaining Black Axe to keep an eye on
Horem.
