History:
(Peter Parker: Spider-Man / Elektra '98 Annual (fb) -
BTS) - Max Igoe was a widely respected journalist, having earned
numerous awards along his career, such as the Press Club Trophy, the
Laventhol Award, and even the Pulitzer. He had established himself a
personal sports column in the Daily Bugle newspaper for years. Igoe had
negotiated a substantial increase in pay. His reputation had built a
level of trust when a retired, washed-out champion boxer, Sam Lincoln,
revealed a secret: he had hidden evidence that a top-level crime boss,
Alphonse Scarpetti, had organized the brutal murders of a judge and
district attorney many years ago. Excited with the money and fame
prospects beyond the initial biographical book deal, Igoe bragged to a
friend at a reporter's bar; within 36 hours, Lincoln had been murdered
by an assassin.
(Peter Parker: Spider-Man / Elektra '98 Annual) -
Drunk and suicidal from guilt over contributing to Lincoln's murder, he
stepped off the top of the Daily Bugle building at night, but was
caught by Spider-Man, who happened to be swinging by. Several of Igoe's
ribs broke with the save. The journalist immediately regretted his
attempted suicide and explained to Spider-Man what had happened.
Spider-Man webbed him up on a nearby balcony to sober up and calm down,
then left him to investigate.
(Peter Parker: Spider-Man / Elektra '98 Annual (fb) -
BTS) - Igoe organised a little help from the Bugle Scholarship Fund to help
put Lincoln's granddaughter through school. Igoe also wrote
Lincoln's obituary in the Daily Bugle.
(Peter Parker: Spider-Man / Elektra '98 Annual) - A
few nights later, Igoe spoke with Spider-Man and Elektra regarding Lincoln's evidence the two heroes had found that identified
Scarpetti as the killer.

A journalist with these awards should have had a higher profile in a newspaper (and hence more appearances), so maybe it says something about the Daily Bugle.
