History:
(Marvel
Comics Super Special#1 (fb) - BTS) - Apparently frequenting an
unidentified disco in some sort of floating space city, Mandu was at
least considered to be the queen of Big Leo (who considered himself her
"old man," aka boyfriend)
(Marvel Comics Super Special#1) - When newly-empowered KISS
members Peter Criss (aka the Cat) and Ace Frehley (aka Space Ace)
arrived in the space city disco (a result of Ace's unpracticed
space-warping power), Peter and Mandu were swiftly, mutually attracted.
Mandu met Criss' eyes, acknowleding him and inviting him over with a glance.
Criss approached her, and the two introduced themselves before dancing, touching, and purring together.
When the song was over, they had swiftly become the hit of the evening.
They left the dance floor amid applause and murmurs, oblivious to all but one another.
(Marvel Comics Super Special#1 - BTS) - Some other feline aliens present -- referring to
Criss getting friendly with Big Leo's queen -- noted that there was
going to be trouble, as "that little Tom ain't long for this satellite.
(Marvel Comics Super Special#1) - Mandu asked "Peter Criss" if they might sit the next one out, and he led her to a table.
Noting Criss was new around there, Mandu asked if he was just passing
through. As Criss paused to answer, Mandu quickly added, "It would be
nice if you could stay...with me. Would you like that?"
Admitting he might like that, Criss told her, however, that it wasn't
in the stars as he had this other gig on this other world, and he had
to see it through.
Mandu was disappointed,
but before she could respond, Big Leo showed up with his associates and
warned Criss to stop looking at her. Mandu introduced Leo to Criss,
noting "Leo, uhm, thinks he's my old man...!"
Mandu could only stand by, visibly distressed as Leo's agents grabbed Ace and Leo himself grabbed Criss.
After Criss had gotten free and drop-kicked Leo and after Ace had
driven off his attackers and contained Leo within a cone of force,
Mandu noted how impressed she was: "Your friend is as powerful as you
are...prepossessing."
Via his energy staff, Leo got out of the cone of force, and Criss leapt to the attack. Although Big Leo urged Criss to get down off of him as it was Mandu he <presumably he was going to say "wanted">,
Criss swiftly knocked out Leo, and Ace apparently destroyed the staff.
Ace then teleported himself and Criss back to Earth, telling Criss to bid his sweetheart farewell.
Mandu gave Criss a tearful wave goodbye as he faded away.
Comments: Created by Steve Gerber, Alan Weiss, and Allen Milgrom.
When introducing herself to Peter Criss, she said, "I
am called
Mandu." That leaves it somewhat open that Mandu may not be her real
name but rather one she adopted at some point...but there's nothing
further to support this either way, and we don't have any other aliases
for her, so we'll just ASSume it's Mandu.
In their brief time together, she always referred to Peter as "Peter Criss."
In case you don't know, queen refers to a female cat, like tom refers to a male cat.
Mandu was not confirmed to be a member of any known alien race. Other
known feline extraterrestrial races include
- Calurnians Rom Annual #4 (1985) Feline humanoids of Calurnia; enslaved by Shi'ar; identified members Dr. Tyreseus (Liberator).
- Mephitisoids X-Men #107 (1977) Shi'ar galaxy race from
planet Tryl'sart; feline humanoids with night vision and enhanced
olfactory senses, retractable claws, black & white fur and a long
tail; could control others via pheromones; former warrior race
conquered by Shi'ar; quarantined to their home planet; used as warriors
and slave laborers; identified members Hepzibah, Mephitisoid. - these are more skunk-like...
- Rack-Cats Captain Marvel #39 (1975) Large antlered quadruped felines from Watchers' homeworld; identified member Mad-Eye.
- unidentified Claws of the Cat #3 (1973) Feline humanoids with aquatic base on Earth.

Dragon-Men; identified members Queen Nara--Marvel Mystery Comics#8
(1940)
- Whatever race to wich Jaqe Murania belongs--Captain Marvel I#42
It is also possible that she is a mutate, or perhaps she is a member of one of the Cat People races of Earth.
