History
(Books of Doom#3 (fb) - BTS) - "Otto" was a member of a secret order of Tibetan monks/mystics who had long foreseen
that "a man who lost everything, who hid his true face from the world, would come to their temple to learn their ancient secrets; and that man would become their master."

(Books of Doom#3 (fb) - BTS) - Victor von Doom returned to eastern Europe following the explosion (of his device used to contact his mother, Cynthia von Doom, in the netherworld) that scarred his face and led to his expulsion from Empire State University.

(Books of Doom#3 (fb) - BTS) - Appreciating von Doom to be the man from the prophecy and locating him as he hid out in secrecy with his face masked, "Otto" posed as a drunken man and frequently slept on von Doom's stairwell, despite instructions to the contrary.

(Books of Doom#3 (fb)) - After von Doom instructed the "drunken fool" to get out of his stairwell, Otto complimented the young master von Doom, such a nice boy, and explained that he only sought shelter from the cold. Von Doom brusquely told Otto to seek shelter elsewhere; "If you know what's good for you, you'll learn to stay out of my way."

(Books of Doom#3 (fb)) - Von Doom again instructed Otto to get out and "drink yourself to death elsewhere!"

(Books of Doom#3 (fb)) - Otto gave von Doom's lover, Valeria, a flower. Von Doom instructed Otto to leave them be, but Otto explained he only wanted to give her a gift and that he had meant no harm. Valeria tried to convince von Doom not to be cruel to Otto as he was likely a sad man who had lost everything.monks_of_doom-otto-magicenergies.jpg

They were interrupted by a group of KGB agents sent to forcibly recruit von Doom for Department X, and who had clandestinely arranged von Doom's reunion with Valeria so that he would have something to live for and/or protect.

After von Doom agreed to go with the agents if they released Valeria and they insisted they would keep her to ensure his cooperation, Valeria was suddenly surrounded by a protective force field generated by the flower Otto had given her.

Otto then generated magical energy to take out the Russians and get von Doom away from them, but not without taking multiple shots to the chest. monks_of_doom-otto-dying

Recognizing what had happened, von Doom turned to the fallen Otto, who noted he had almost missed his chance. Von Doom asked how he knew they would do this and how he did all of that, but Otto asked the "young master" to listen to him: "I come from a temple...high in the mountains of Tibet...long has it been foretold that a man who lost everything...who hid his true face from the world...would come to their temple...to learn their ancient secrets...and that man would become their master."

Von Doom accused Otto of being insane, but Otto continued, "No...it's true...you are the student who will best the teachers...you cannot deny...destiny...I know, because I was...I....find my temple...young master...they will teach how to master...science of magic...your path is just beginning...find them...find them..."

    And then Otto died.

Comments: Created by  Ed Brubaker, Pablo Raimondi, and Mark Farmer.

Otto may be his real name, or, he may have had a more traditional Tibetan name and took the name Otto so as to fit in in Latveria...or maybe he was German or something else and had traveled to join the monks but kept his real name. The world may never know...

I like palindromes. A fear of palindromes is Aibohphobia.
Maybe it was deliberately constructed, but that's neither here nor there.
Too bad I hid a boot.
