History:
(Avengers Annual I#10 (fb) - BTS) - Under unrevealed circumstances,
Madelyne "Maddy" Pryor became seriously ill. She was admitted to San
Francisco's Ocean Beach hospital where she eventually recuperated from
her undisclosed medical condition.
(Avengers Annual I#10) - Maddy Pryor was discharged from the hospital on
an early Wednesday morning. She was released into the care of Sister
Luke, who escorted her out, along with a nurse who told the "little
darling" to take care. As they approached the exit, they were passed by
Lieutenant Sabrina Morrell who had come to the hospital to meet up with
Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) after the heroine had brought in a woman
who'd fallen off the Golden Gate Bridge earlier. Maddy and Sister Luke
ran into Sabrina's colleague, Sergeant Golachinsky who gallantly held
the door for the girl and the nun. Before stepping outside, Maddy told
the police officer: "I'm Maddy Pryor. I been sick. But I'm better now."
Bemused by the pig-tailed child, Golachinksy replied: "So I see".
Comments: Created by Chris Claremont (writer),
Michael Golden (pencils), Armando Gil (inks)
The presence of Sister Luke seems to indicate that Maddy is an orphan. Wouldn't
you expect her mother or father to be present to pick their young
daughter up from the hospital?
And with that out of the way... Yes, she's Maddy Pryor, just not
∗that∗ Maddy Pryor. But Chris Claremont sure liked to tease X-fans with
the possibility of a connection. For years, readers wondered about the
significance of Maddy's one panel appearance in Avengers Annual I#10.
Why go to the trouble of naming a background character? Initially,
Claremont had simply thrown it in as a nod to Maddy Pryor, a British
folksinger who fronted his favorite band Steeleye
Span. But apparently, Chris liked the name enough to later reuse
it when he introduced Madelyne Pryor over in Uncanny X-Men I#168.
Fans began to speculate, even though there was no apparent relation
between Maddy and Madelyne.
That is, until Claremont decided to have a little fun with that alleged dangler. In late 1988's Uncanny X-Men I#238, Madelyne's mind is being probed by a Genoshan telepath who finds himself confronted by a young girl in an orange dress and pig-tails called Maddy who was sick and then got better... She even sang a Steeleye Span song for good measure.
Does that mean anything? Maybe, if one is prone to speculation. For instance, one could argue that Madelyne, as a retroactive, Phoenix force infused psi-talent, might have been telepathically aware of Maddy at the time (just like us mortals can't help but google our own name). She could have then (sub)consciously absorbed some of the girl's recollections in order to have memories of a childhood that weren't copied from Jean Grey's mind. But neither Claremont or any of his successors ever dared or got around to officially making a connection. Perhaps that's for the best... After all, Maddy just got better.
