History:
(Marvel Knights 4#28 (fb)) - Martin Simms met and
married his teenage sweetheart, Lucy, and together had an only son,
Jeremy.
(Marvel Knights 4#4 (fb) - BTS) - Aged 16, Jeremy was
killed in a car accident. The death strained the marriage and six
months later, the couple separated. Eventually there was no contact.
Later, blood from coughing for Martin led to a terminal throat cancer
diagnosis. Depressed and scared he would die alone, he wrote a suicide
note and left it next to a photo of his son and wife in his office,
then stepped onto a window ledge high up on a New York skyscraper,
intending to jump.
(Marvel Knights 4#4) - Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards),
going in to do temp office work but seeing the cordoned-off commotion
around Martin Simms' building, stretched up and comforted Martin,
listening to his concerns. Reed gave Martin his personal
mobile phone number for when the cancer would be close to taking
Martin, promising he would be by Martin's side
as he slipped away. This reassured Martin and he no longer wanted to
jump.
(Marvel
Knights 4#28 -
BTS) - Martin's condition deteriorated and he was admitted to hospital.
No longer able to speak due to the aggressive throat cancer, he could
communicate only by writing. He instructed Nurse Christine Palmer to
contact Reed Richards.
(Marvel Knights 4#28) - Reed interrupted an
Illuminati meeting to rush to Martin's side. Martin agreed to Reed's
use of an experimental earpiece that would allow Reed to read Martin's
thoughts. Nurse Palmer privately told Reed that Martin was on
sufficient morphine to block the pain and was unlikely to survive the
night; she okayed his staying the night next to Martin. As he'd
promised, Reed held Martin's hand and witnessed his passing, seeing the
important moments of Martin's life with Lucy and Jeremy, even Martin's
vision of a reunion with his son in the afterlife.
(Marvel Knights 4#28 (fb) - BTS) - Reed helped with
the immediate logistics and paperwork concerning Martin's death and
informed Lucy Simms.
