History:
(Human Fly I#18 (fb) - BTS) - Frank Sturgis was owner
and operator of Frank's Bar, which he set up just outside the Hopi
reservation near La Cruces, New Mexico. His alcohol brought most of the
senior Hopi Tribal Council into line with his opportunist goals and he
set up a tourist Indian fair timed to drown out a sacred Hopi festival,
although it divided the community along largely racial divides. Sturgis
contracted stuntman the Human Fly to participate at the event to boost
attendance. Sturgis also used intimidation to get his way and even had
one defiant elder killed; the body was found by the Human Fly.
(Human Fly I#18 (fb)) - Hopi local Cha'tima informed
the Human Fly of Sturgis' actions, stating also that the Fly wasn't
welcome. The stuntman confronted Sturgis at his bar and refused to
perform, but Sturgis revealed that the Hopi would be financially liable
for the advance advertising. The Fly angrily left, but knew that Sturgis
had the upper hand. Sturgis then had his thugs follow the Human Fly and his troupe to
beat him up.
(Human Fly I#19 (fb)) - Although abhorring violence,
the Human Fly and his friends, including Cha'tima, overcame their
attackers. After hearing of this, Sturgis called for the Human Fly to
be killed. The next day during the fair, the Human Fly stopped one of
Sturgis' men aggressively harassing Cha'tima, while Sturgis gloated how
he was getting rich from the people attending. Cha'tima's cousin,
Nakwach, stopped Hankus, who had been assigned by Sturgis as a sniper
to shoot the Human Fly during the highwire stunt. While Sturgis and his
men struggled against the Hopi guard, the Human Fly and his troupe
joined the Hopi festival.
(Human Fly I#18-19) - West-TV reporter Harmony Whyte typed a report covering the events.
