Base of Operations: New York, USA (Earth-57780)
First Appearance: Spidey Super Stories#39/3
(March, 1979)
Powers/Abilities: Thanos behaved like a brash, power-hungry bully. He did not display any cosmic-level powers or enhanced strength.
Thanos briefly wielded the wish-fulfilling Cosmic Cube. He also flew a personalized helicopter.
History:
(Spidey Super Stories#39/3) - After the creation of
the Cosmic Cube by uniformed scientists (see comments), Thanos was on hand to claim it
for his plan to take over Earth.
(Spidey Super Stories#39/5 (fb) - BTS) - Through
unrevealed means, the Cat was able to acquire the Cosmic Cube. Thanos
gave chase to get it back.
(Spidey
Super Stories#39/5) - From his personalized helicopter, Thanos dropped
exploding bombs around the Cat to harm her and she accidentally dropped
the Cosmic Cube in an alley. The Cat alerted skateboarder Speedy about
the danger before running off. Thanos saw the boy find the Cube and and
snatched it off him. Nearby, Spider-Man and the Cat confronted Thanos
while Mary Jane Watson comforted the boy. Using the Cube, Thanos
summoned a giant dog against the heroes but they chased it off. Thanos
next used the Cube to generate a localized earthquake, but this caused
the villain to drop the Cube. Speedy lunged at the Cube and used its
power to wrap Thanos in long grass as a restraint. The police arrived
to arrest Thanos and he was led away in handcuffs.
Comments: Created by uncredited writer, Win Mortimer (pencils), Mike Esposito (inks).
It's not specified where this Thanos is from, but
I'll assume (given his appearance) he's similar to Earth-616's with an
extraterrestrial origin. However, we don't see Thanos-57780 using any
cosmic, blast-like powers like his Earth-616/Prime counterpart, so this
could just as easily be a big ex-wrestler with face paint and a
costume.
(Or maybe the Cat negated his powers when she first took the Cosmic
Cube? The Cat (Patsy Walker) may have been an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D.
agent along with the later "police officers", and the handcuffs may
have been disguised power dampeners...?)
The evil scientists wear A.I.M.-style "beekeeper" uniforms (although colored orange with blue helmets), but aren't identified as A.I.M.
CBR reports that apparently Jim Salicrup was inspired by DC's Batcopter, hence Thanos in a helicopter...
Profile by Grendel Prime.

Cat
retrieved the item. Its fate is unknown.
