History:
(X-Men I#17 - BTS) - After the X-Men's victory over the Sentinels left some of them injured, Lt. General Fredericks and the National Guard decided to take the young heroes to the hospital. During the ride over in an ambulance, Iceman blacked out.
(X-Men I#17) - Dr. John Thomas was the attending surgeon in charge of taking care of the injured teenage heroes. Thomas found it difficult to accurately diagnose Iceman, in part because of his unique, icy physique and also because the comatose mutant started ranting deliriously. He then ordered round-the-clock observation on Iceman as he made his way to his next patient, the Beast. Thomas studied X-rays of his fractured foot and noted how remarkably fast the bones were healing. Sometime later, Beast and Marvel Girl came to check with Thomas on how Iceman was doing. He explained that he held little hope the icy teen could awaken from his coma and suggested the X-Men contacted Iceman's parents. After the other X-Men left the hospital, Thomas was harassed by two reporters who hoped to get a scoop on the mutants' secret identities. He quickly showed them the door, telling them that taking care of his patients is all he cared about. Just then, the nurse noticed Iceman's pulse was dropping, prompting Thomas to prepare to use a new medication.
(X-Men I#18) - With Iceman in critical condition, Dr. Thomas had no choice but to administer a new experimental drug, using a laser induced hypodermic machine to penetrate his frigid epidermis. After injecting him with the cure, Thomas decided to wait around to see the results. Soon after Thomas and his nurse briefly left the room, Professor X mentally contacted Iceman to get him to free the other X-Men from Magneto. Iceman woke up and left the hospital through the window to save his fellow teammates.
