History:
(War Comics#9/1 (fb) - BTS) - Harry Thorne was
enlisted in the US Army and sent to the Korean war zone. Fearful of the
gunfire, shelling and death, he hoped for an end to the conflict,
placing faith in peace talks between the United Nations and the
Communist forces.
(War Comics#9/1) - Thorne was vocal in his hopes for
peace talks, while other soldiers did not expect peace. He was quietly
ashamed seeing fellow infantry soldiers killed in action. In the middle
of a battle, he desperately asked about prospects for a cease fire, but
fellow soldiers berated him as they focused on fighting and surviving.
Partly hoping Communist forces also wanted a cease fire, he thought the
Communists weren't really out to kill. Despite this, partly out of
selfishness, he hung back while fellow soldiers advanced and he
remained shocked at the carnage, gunfire and explosions. However, a
small band of enemy North Koreans made it to the rubble where Thorne
was hiding and gunned him down from behind. He lay dead on his back as
a cease fire was finally called on the battlefield.
Comments: Created by uncredited writer and Joe Maneely (pencils & inks).
Published in the midst of the Korean War, the story
draws an unfriendly connection between pacifism and cowardice, yet also
shows the US war machine as almost unstoppable.
