First Appearance: Captain Britain II#7/1 (July, 1985)

History:

(Mighty World of Marvel#9-11 - BTS) - During Sir James Jasper's time as Britain's Prime Minister, he engulfed his country and possibly the entire world in a reality warp. As a result, reality became unstable, ordinary citizens would mutate, catch fire or float off into the sky while buildings would be twisted into whatever vision "Mad Jim" had for them. Jaspers was eventually defeated, but a lasting result of the "Jaspers Warp" was a large number of unborn children who were mutated in the womb. They would eventually be born and become known as Warpies. (see comments)

(Excalibur I#50 (fb) - BTS) - The unintentional reason the Warpies' mutations were permanent was a lighthouse off of England's Northwest coast (the manifestation of Merlyn's multidimensional tower on Earth-616).

(Captain Britain II#14/1 (fb) - BTS) - Additionally, Earth-238's Captain UK's anomalous presence prevented the reality damage caused by the Jaspers Warp from fully healing.

(Captain Britain II#8/1 (fb) - BTS) - The UK government formed the R.C.X (Resources Control Executive) agency to handle Britain's paranormal assets, initially by simply gathering the Warpies.

(Excalibur I#62 (fb)) - The R.C.X. biblically code-named leader Peter (Nigel Orpington-Smythe) incorrectly believed the children were mutants.

(Captain Britain II#7/1 (fb) - BTS) - Over a hundred Warpies were found by the R.C.X. whose computer had calculated it to be 70% of the total Warpie population. To safeguard the children, they were housed in an old prison while the use of drugs (sterazine) and music (Lou Reed) kept them docile. As soon as they were under R.C.X. control, plans were made to start training the Warpies to become powerful operatives. Raphael, leader of the Narco Hypnosis team, selected eleven of the most powerful Warpies for training. Calling his group the Cherubim, they were all given costumes and codenames: AC-DC, Fern, Giggles, Lump, Quill and the Cherubim Whirlwind quintuplets.

(Excalibur I#62 (fb)) - R.C.X. operatives Gabriel and Michael went to collect a young Warpie child, affectionally calling it Beetroot.

(Captain Britain II#10/1 (fb) / Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis#3 (fb)) - R.C.X. operatives Gabriel, Michael and Joshua N'Dingi again set out to collect more Warpie children and located Robert Arnold. Before they could safely retrieve him, the frightened child manifested his powers and exploded in N'Dingi's face (he survived, but the experience would set him on a path to become Doctor Crocodile).

(Excalibur I#62 (fb)) - Learning R.C.X. leader Peter intended to mold the children into soldiers, agents who had genuinely come to care for their charges decided to relocate them away from Peter's control and obtain Captain Britain's protection, believing his physical might and popular public status could block Peter's political influence.

(Captain Britain II#7/1) - The R.C.X. had come to care about the children and hoped to obtain Captain Britain (Brian Braddock)'s protection. Hoping to get the hero's attention, R.C.X. operatives Michael and Gabriel lured photographer Linda McQuillan (secretly Captain UK) to their prison for a photo assignment. After revealing to Linda they knew her secret identity, the R.C.X. introduced her to the Warpies and their unique origins. Linda agreed to help them out and brought the Cherubim and the R.C.X. agents to Braddock Manor.

(Captain Britain II#8/1) - Successfully getting past the nightmarish creatures projected by the Braddock Manor computer, Captain UK and her guests reached the front door where they were met by Jeeves (Mastermind). However, Captain Britain wasn't interested in allying himself with R.C.X., feeling they were untrustworthy and manipulators. Meanwhile, Brian's houseguest Meggan sensed the presence of the Cherubim who were left in the vans outside. Naturally curious and innocent minded, Meggan accidentally set them free. Without proper guidance the Cherubim attacked her, with the Cherubim Whirlwind quintuplets whipping up a giant whirlwind that caught the attention of Captain Britain and his guests.

(Captain Britain II#9/1) - Captain Britain, Captain UK and Betsy Braddock engaged the Cherubim until Cherubim's Lump confronted them with their most feared nightmares. This only aggravated the situation, because the Captains envisioned the Fury and used their might to knock all Warpies unconscious. Moments later Meggan (who had shed her old, feral form) defeated the Whirlwind quintuplets and seemingly killed them because she was unfamiliar with her newfound strength. After the fight, Gabriel noticed the surviving members of the Cherubim had disappeared. He approached Betsy, hoping to charm her only to be rebuffed. That changed when moments later several vans filled with Warpies arrived at the Braddock Manor. Unable to turn the children away, Betsy caved and arranged for them to stay at the manor. Captain Britain was unaware the R.C.X. operatives discussed how to get him out of the picture. Allying themselves with Jeeves (Mastermind), they agreed to allow the scheming hologram to convince Captain Britain to leave of his free will. After only two days with the Warpies in his house, Brian was already fed up and frustrated.

(Captain Britain II#10/1 - BTS) - Captain Britain and Meggan left the manor to deal with Jamie Braddock's capture at the hand of Doctor Crocodile.

(Captain Britain II#12/2 - 14/2) - During that time Lex Christian came across several Warpies in the streets of London. He would gather more Warpies and teach them to steal for him, gaining the nickname Uncle Lex (read the history of the Parasites here).

(Captain Britain II#13/1) - After convincing Betsy Braddock to become the new Captain Britain, the R.C.X. and the Warpies watched several news reports of Betsy and her tutor Captain UK foiling several robberies. Not much later, Captain UK would leave to go her own way.

(Captain Britain II#13/1 (fb) - BTS) - British crime lord Vixen's forces kidnapped two R.C.X. agents and a truckload of Warpies. Vixen threatened to kill them if the new Captain Britain wouldn't turn up at the South Bank building site on the Thames, where she had arranged for Slaymaster to kill her.

(Captain Britain II#13/1 - BTS) - Betsy Braddock was severely injured by Slaymaster who left her blind. Betsy sent a telepathic cry for help to her brother who flew at top speed to rescue his sister. Enraged, Brian overpowered Slaymaster and crushed his head with a large rock. Vixen ran off, reasoning she still had to dispose of her Warpies hostages (the Warpies entry in X-Men: Earth's Mutant Heroes confirms they were indeed murdered).

(Captain Britain II#14/1) - The Warpies celebrated christmas at Braddock Manor. The joyful children opened their presents as the now blind Betsy Braddock played with them. When Lady Roma took Captain UK with her to Earth-616 she informed Mastermind that the cause of the Warpies had been removed and none would be born in the future. Mastermind then revealed his true form to R.C.X. operative Michael and told him he would from now on be in control of the situation.

(Captain Britain II#14/1) - On the request of chief inspector Dai Thomas, Captain Britain and Meggan agreed to help him catch an assassin who had killed at least 27 gangsters in Glasgow on behalf of the Glaswegian gangsters the McCloud Brothers. The assassin proved to be Donald "Shoulders" McGill, an insane alcoholic who used his Warpie son, Calum, to kill. Calum, called Silver Death, was a flying nightmare consisting of tentacles ending in razor-sharp blades. Using the heroes as bait, on New Year's Eve, Dai Thomas finally lured the killers to him, and when Shoulders unleashed his murderous son against Thomas, the heroes intervened. After an intense battle in the dark Captain Britain finally struck Silver Death's core a solid blow, killing the Warpie instantly. Shoulders McGill was then taken into custody by Dai Thomas.

(Uncanny X-Men I#254 (fb) - BTS) - Through an association with the Weird Happenings Organization (W.H.O.), the Warpies were placed in Moira MacTaggert's care. They moved from Braddock Manor to her Muir Island research center in Scotland. The Warpies remained there for several months.

(Uncanny X-Men I#254) - The Warpies were visited in their nursery by Legion and several Morlocks like Sunder who had survived the Morlock Massacre. During their shared playtime, the island was attacked by the Reavers who had come to Muir Island looking for the X-Men. The nursery was penetrated by Bonebreaker, Skullbuster and Pretty Boy who blasted through the wall and immediately opened fire. Sunder immediately shielded the children with his body and was aided by Legion, who erected a psionic force field to protect everyone. Sunder directed the Warpies to head for the bunker while he turned to face the Reavers. However, Legion (presumably influenced by the Shadow King) gave in to a sudden sadistic streak. He stopped shielding Sunder, making him an easy target for the Reavers who shot the durable Morlock in the back. Bonebreaker was about to deliver the killing shot when Tom Corsi and Polaris arrived to chase the cyborgs off.

(Uncanny X-Men I#254 - BTS) - Following the Reavers' attack on Muir Island, the Warpies returned to Braddock Manor where Mastermind continued to take care of them.

(Excalibur I#62 (fb)) - With Mastermind as the sole defender of the Warpies, the R.C.X.'s real leader Peter (Nigel Orpington-Smythe) decided it was time to strike and claim the Warpies as his own private army. Peter's agents planted a bomb that disabled Mastermind, allowing him to subsequently abduct all the Warpies and their rogue R.C.X. agents (the ones who had managed to keep the Warpies out of Peter's hands). While the "rogue" agents were put into suspended animation, Peter won the naive Warpies over. The Warpies were then used to construct Cloud Nine, an underground base 75 feet beneath Liverpool's abandoned St. Oswald's Church.

(Excalibur I#64 (fb) - BTS) - Peter, believing he was acting like a true patriot, gathered hundreds of Warpies at Cloud Nine. He analyzed their abilities and potential, selecting the most powerful among them for his elite. He placed those Warpies in teams such as the Advocates and the Seraphim in preparation for an all-out assault on superhuman "threats" to Britain like Mys-Tech, Dark Angel and even Excalibur.

(Excalibur I#62 (fb) - BTS) - Cloud Nine housed a total of 400 Warpies. The first arrivals received colorful names with appropriate nouns and imaginative adjectives. But when the Warpies continued to pour in, fancy names became less of a priority and the focus shifted to categorization. R.C.X. settled on names based on animals, vegetables and minerals. Several Warpies proved uncontrollable and dangerous either because of their limited intellect and monstrous forms. They were labeled "Serpents" and kept inside Cloud Nine in a prison called the "snake pit".

(Excalibur I#62 - BTS) - Following FI-6's shutdown, its personnel and equipment were absorbed into the R.C.X. organization. The same thing happened to the Weird Happings Organization (W.H.O.) after Stuart's death.

(Excalibur I#50 - BTS) - Captain Britain and Meggan, now part of Excalibur, destroyed Merlyn's lighthouse. This dispersed the focused arcane energies contained in the construct. As a result, the Warpies began randomly regressing to normalcy.

(Excalibur I#62 (fb)) - When some of his Warpies began to lose their powers, Peter incorrectly concluded this was part of an unknown foe's attack. He had the afflicted Warpies quarantined, while R.C.X. medics inadvertently killed some of them in an attempt to stabilize them. Peter placed others in suspended animation to halt the reversion.

(Excalibur I#61 - BTS) - Seeking to bring other superhuman "threats" under his control, Peter sent out several of his Warpies squads to capture them.

(Excalibur I#61) - The Cherubim had been tasked with abducting ex-British agent Micromax and tracked him down to the Broadcasting House in London. Carrying out the mission appeared easy: Lump appeared before the hero as a beautiful woman, leaving him open to Fern and AC/DC hitting him unconscious. The Warpie named Snoop was ordered to spy on Captain Britain and Meggan who were on a well-deserved holiday on England's south coast. Snoop witnessed how Brian asked Meggan to marry him, thinking to himself it was a pity they wouldn't know a happily ever after. The Seraphim were sent out to abduct Alistaire Stuart. Not only would that lure Excalibur, it also stopped Stuart from exposing the R.C.X. framing his sister (in an attempt to weaken the W.H.O. and to increase their own power).

(Excalibur I#62) - Alistaire Stuart woke up within Cloud Nine and immediately tried hitting Peter, who introduced him to his personal bodyguards the Advocates (a group with less than imaginative codenames as Aberdeen Angus, Mustard, Shrew, Salt and Celery). Convinced Excalibur would put an end to Peter's mad scheme he was surprised to learn his capture was part of the trap set up to lure the superhero group. Later that night, Excalibur had indeed tracked Stuart down to the ruins of St. Oswald Church. The leader of the Seraphim, Peanut, surprised the heroes and then introduced his fellow teammates who emerged from the shadows to attack and quickly defeat Excalibur save for Nightcrawler. Aware he didn't stand a chance against the powerful team of Warpies, Kurt played possum and allowed himself and his teammates to be carried away into the secret hideout underneath the church.

At the same time, Peter was showing Stuart around Cloud Nine. Stuart was outraged when he learned FI-6 agent Micromax was a captive as well. Peter justified this by reasoning that FI-6 was absorbed into the R.C.X., just as W.H.O. had, which meant they were all on the same side. Before Stuart could press his point, several doctors suddenly rushed by with the small telepathic Warpie Beetroot. The dying telepath shared his thoughts with Stuart, showing him how the Warpies had happily lived at Braddock Manor until they were captured by Peter's forces and heavily experimented on. Beetroot's visions ended when he died. Enraged at what Peter's actions had caused, Stuart hit him only to be subdued by his bodyguard Aberdeen Angus.

After observing the base and the Seraphim, Nightcrawler decided it was time to act. Having analyzed the Seraphim, he used the small hallway to his advantage, teleporting around his attackers so the Seraphim accidentally took each other out. However, their fight had opened the doorway to the Serpents' holding pen causing the monstrous Warpies to spill out and attack. Nightcrawler would have been killed, if not for Peanut who got help in the form of Peter and his Advocates. Peter then placed Nightcrawler, Shadowcat and Cerise under arrest, pending official investigation because he considered them illegal aliens.

(Excalibur I#63) - Another of Peter's Warpie squads (Lodestone, Oak and Ocelot) had been tasked with capturing Excalibur's ally Kylun. They successfully tracked the superhuman down to his parents' house in the forest. Before Kylun could ring the doorbell, Lodestone used his magnetic powers to send him flying over to them. The skilled hero quickly kicked Lodestone in the head while evading Oak's punches. Kylun then reached for his weapons, the enchanted blades of Zz'ria and slashed through Ocelot's arm. The innocent minded Ocelot, however remained unharmed because the blades couldn't hurt any being that was pure of heart. A surprised Kylun was then knocked unconscious by Oak. With their target down, the team set out to return to the Cloud Nine base.

Even though Excalibur had been captured, Peter still pretended to only have good intentions. He allowed the heroes to roam around the Cloud Nine facility, but had them accompanied by Warpies that cancelled out their powers (Sponge, Syphon, Static). Peter gave another tour of Cloud Nine, starting with the sixty-three Warpies he kept in suspended animation to halt their so-called destabilization. Peter explained he only wanted to save the children's lives, claiming they were destabilizing because of an unknown attack. Peter, still convinced the Warpies were actually mutants, asked Nightcrawler to participate in a special training session with some of his charges so he could study the common features in mutants. On their way to the training room, they were greeted by a large group of Warpies who were part of the Cloud Nine workforce. Ecstatic to meet the famous British heroes, the Warpies asked for autographs. The Warpie Silkworm even offered to make Nightcrawler a new costume when he spotted Kurt wasn't wearing his usual attire. Before Wagner was able to refuse, he found himself wearing an entirely new costume designed by the Warpie. After saying goodbye, the group made their way to Cloud Nine's training facility.

Reminiscent of the X-Men's Danger Room the training facility generated an interactive hologram that Nightcrawler had to fight while a special Warpie team (Iris, Scope, Sonar, Lens and Scan) used their powers to monitor Nightcrawler's metabolic activity. As Nightcrawler fought the hologram, the team's raw nerve impulses were fed through their backpacks into Cloud Nine's mainframe. But when Nightcrawler used his teleportation to escape one of the holograms the flash temporarily blinded the entire team with an exception of Scan because he didn't have eyes. Scan learned that Nightcrawler's teleportation appeared as two virtually simultaneous dimensional rifts. Before the Warpies could continue their observations, the session was aborted because of a special alarm. Dr. Nicholas and his assistants (Zebedee and unrevealed others) concluded Nightcrawler was also suffering from the destabilization, just as the sixty-three Warpies already in suspended animation.

At the same time on Britain's Cornish coast the Cherubim arrived to capture Captain Britain and Meggan.

(Excalibur I#64) - After an extensive fight, the Cherubim defeated Captain Britain and Meggan and brought them back to the Cloud Nine facility. A feat Snoop made a report on and showed Peter, Luke (Peter's right-hand man) and Jordan (another of Peter's loyal employees). Meanwhile, resident genetics genius Dr. Nicholas did a full scan on Nightcrawler who received a visit from several Warpie children such as Gourd and Skink who were impressed when the hero lifted his weights a hundred times. After loud cheers the children went to their sleeping quarters. Shadowcat, still accompanied by Static, had come up with a way to rid herself of the power-cancelling chaperone. She started a special program in the training room which included a hologram of Kitty which Static thought was the real thing. Sneaking away until she was out of reach of Static's powers, Shadowcat regained her phasing abilities. She phased through the walls and reached a room where Captain Britain was just in talks with Peter.

Peter hoped to convince Captain Britain to fight on their behalf. But Cap became violent when he spotted his fiancee Meggan inside a vat of regenerative fluids (this turned out to be merely a hologram, Meggan's body had already been moved to a secure level with the other prisoners). Peter nevertheless asked nearby Warpies to defend him. Oak, Butane, Aberdeen, Pumice and Cabbage came to his aid. Luckily, this display of force calmed the Captain down long enough for Peter to try and sell him his lies filled tale. Unaware they were being watched by Kitty through one of the air vents, Kitty quickly saw through Peter's ruse and couldn't believe Brian was falling for his lies. But before Kitty could act she was taken out by Ferret who had used a fazer gun on her. Afraid he had hurt the girl, Ferret kept on apologizing while he brought Shadowcat from the vents and handed her over to Luke (Peter's right-hand man). As a reward for helping he was allowed to go to the video arcade.

Upon learning of Kitty's capture Peter decided to keep up his ruse and had the Warpy Lump take on Kitty's appearance. Lump made his way to Nightcrawler, whom the shapeshifter tried to convince of the R.C.X.'s good intentions, however Nightcrawler wasn't fooled by the appearance but decided to play along.

(Excalibur I#65) - Peter continued to spy on Captain Britain who was keeping watch over the injured Meggan (still unaware it was only a hologram). Peter enjoyed seeing the hero shattered, thinking he was pathetic and easily molded into whatever Peter wanted him to be: a true patriotic symbol. Just then, Peter and Luke were interrupted by Aberdeen Angus who had begun to revert back to human. Believing he wouldn't be of any use without his powers Peter ordered Luke to place the Warpy in stasis with the others.

Meanwhile in Cloud Nine's research laboratory Dr. Nicholas was finishing up his work with Nightcrawler, Cerise and "Shadowcat" (actually Lump). Realizing something was wrong with "Shadowcat" Nightcrawler decided to retreat to his private chamber and took Cerise with him. To rid themselves of their assigned Warpies Sponge and Syphon, Nightcrawler took Cerise into his room, passionately kissing Cerise. Believing them to be occupied for the next few hours the Warpies left, allowing the two heroes to snoop around the facility.

When the frustrated Captain Britain smashed a piece of machinery, it caused the hologram of Meggan to fade out. Realizing he'd been tricked enraged the hero even more. Peter's brute force of Warpies quickly reacted by punching the hero down to the floor. But when he refused to surrender, Peter ordered Oak and the other elite Warpies to really beat him up although the Warpies truly questioned his orders.

Elsewhere Nightcrawler and Cerise had successfully rescued their fellow allies and rogue R.C.X. members (the ones that had kept the Warpies out of Peter's hands). But before they could act Luke had appeared with a large battalion of Warpies and a fight brooke loose. However, Sponge and several of the younger Warpies where frightened and tried to escape until Luke tried to force them back into the fight, calling them "mutinous brats". Just then Nightcrawler knocked out Luke, opening the way for Sponge and the other young ones to escape the all-out brawl. On their way out Syphon alarmed Prune and Wire that Peter's elite forces were fighting Excalibur. Prune and Wire decided it was time to help the heroes and rallied all other Warpies to finally take a stand against Peter and his regime.

On the other side of the Cloud Nine facility Captain Britain was still resisting Peter until the Warpies seemingly beat the hero to death. Just then Tadpole, another Warpy loyal to Peter appeared to warn them Excalibur had escaped and a Warpies revolt was underway. Peter ordered his brute force to quickly join the battle to stop Excalibur. When all present had left Roma appeared and fully restored Captain Britain.

During the giant Warpies revolt a large group of Warpies fought alongside Excalibur against those who stayed loyal to Peter until Captain Britain appeared and finally defeated Peter who then called out for Oak, Butane and Bison to help him but they refused since they realized he had lied to them. With Peter defeated, the former R.C.X. agents Gabriel and Michael vowed to take care of the Warpies from now on.

(Excalibur II#4 (fb)) - England's malevolent intelligence agency Black Air learned of the Warpies existence and decided to use them for their secret campaign for global conquest. The Black Air agents attacked and defeated Mastermind before taking away the children. Now in the hands of Black Air, the Warpies were experimented on to turn them into killing machines with armor and implants.

(Excalibur II#4 (fb) - BTS) - A little while later, the time-traveler Kang (Nathaniel Richards, see comments) repaired Mastermind. With his programming seemingly returned to normal (in reality Kang changed his programming causing Mastermind to attack Otherworld), Mastermind rescued the surviving Warpies from Black Air. Mastermind set out to become the hero his creator (Sir James Braddock) had created him to be. To do so he sought a power source potent enough to carry out his plan. Mastermind set his sights on Roma's home dimension Otherworld where the Amulet of Right and the Excalibur sword were kept. Alongside the Warpies, Mastermind invaded Otherworld, slaughtered the Corps (Centurion Britannus, Enforcer Capone and Lady London amongst them) and managed to trap the Omniversal guardian Roma.

(Excalibur II#1 (fb) - BTS) - Mastermind was well aware all corpsmen shared a spiritual connection to Otherworld and would receive visions in the form of nightmares warning them of what had transpired there. To make sure they were dealt with he sent out several squads of Warpies to kill the Corps members on their individual Earths. One such group of five Warpies attacked Captain UK (Linda McQuillan), but she fled to find Captain Britain of Earth-616 in an attempt to warn him.

(Excalibur II#1) - While Captain Britain and Meggan met with his friend the Black Knight (Dane Whitman) and his sister Betsy (Psylocke) suddenly an unconscious Linda McQuillan fell through the glass ceiling. Behind her a group of Warpies appeared, accompanied by Widget (who had fallen under control of Kang, see comments). The Warpies attacked Excalibur but before the heroes could defeat all of them, Widget teleported himself and the Warpies away. After Linda McQuillan regained consciousness she explained what had happened, thinking Roma (Mastermind in disguise) was out to kill the Corps. To stop the Omniversal Guardian, the group went to Otherworld.

(Excalibur II#2 (fb) - BTS) - On Otherworld, a group of the Corps was being slaughtered in battle by bloodthirsty Warpies. The only Corps member who withstood the attack was Crusader X.

(Excalibur II#2) - After defeating the last of the Warpies on the battlefield, Crusader X was suddenly caught by surprise by a group of flying Warpies. The Warpies grabbed the corps member by the head, flew high up in there air and dropped him. He was saved at the last possible second by Linda McQuillan. As soon as they were back on the ground, the heroes from Earth-616 arrived. The heroes discussed their plan of action: because "Roma" already possessed the Amulet of Right the heroes would have to find Excalibur, a task Brian Braddock (without his powers at the time) wanted to fulfill. After the Black Knight called on his flying steed Strider, Brian took off, leaving the heroes to deal with another Warpies attack. On the other side of Otherworld "Roma" and the Cherubim watched how the heroes fought. Thinking them fools, he made his way to one of the dungeons accompanied by Lump. The prisoner was Hauptmann Englande the leader of the nefarious Lightning Force and Corps. "Roma" then ordered Lump to kill the prisoner right after he took the sword's location from his mind.

(Excalibur II#3) - The group of heroes finally arrived at the outer gates of the Omniversal's palace where they dealt with two Warpies who served as guards. After gaining entrance to the inner section they witnessed how "Roma" spoke to her troops, promising the Warpies a new era without torture as soon as they got their hands on the magic blade Excalibur. Even though the heroes had disguised themselves with hoods one of the Warpies named Quill discovered who they were and went to warn his fellow Cherubim. Meggan suddenly sensed a horrible pain behind a wall and when Linda McQuillan knocked it down the heroes discovered the real Roma, blindfolded and chained in mid-air. Sadly, before the heroes could save the Omniversal guardian they were attacked by all the Cherubim who revealed they actually were their old friends the Warpies. The Cherubim successfully defeated all the heroes while Brian Braddock had regained his full powers along with the sword of Excalibur and was attacked by "Roma" who revealed his true identity as Mastermind.

(Excalibur II#4 (fb) - BTS) - Mastermind returned the captured Brian Braddock to the Omniversal palace where he and his Excalibur friends were to be beheaded. The imprisoned Roma was also brought to the gathering.

(Excalibur II#4) - At a public hearing attended by the Warpies, Mastermind explained that Braddock was standing trial before the new ruling class of Otherworld. He deemed Braddock to be guilty and ordered him to be executed. However, the executioner was Sir Benedict, a recent ally of Brian's who swung his giant axe to shatter the power-inhibiting shackles instead. Mastermind quickly ordered the Cherubim to kill them, but Psylocke managed to telekinetically break the shackles restraining her and the others. The heroes engaged the Warpies, while Mastermind himself took on Captain Britain. The battle went on until Meggan, Pyslocke and the Black Knight combined their powers to release Roma from her imprisonment. Now free, the Omniversal Guardian defeated Mastermind. After she had congratulated the heroes, Roma placed the fate of the Warpies in the hands of Captain Britain. Braddock then unleashed the divine spark he carried within himself. Using the power of the Excalibur blade, he restored all the Warpies to their human selves, much to their surprise and joy.

(Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis#1 (fb) - BTS) - Jim Jaspers of Earth-10083 fled his native dimension while being hunted by the Furies (beings that had destroyed all of Earth-10083's superhumans). Jaspers arrived on Earth-616, appearing in Karere, a town in the African country Mbangawi. Just like his 616 counterpart had done in the past, Jaspers' reality jumping caused all of the town's unborn babies to be mutated, which led to the birth of a new generation of Warpies.

(Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis#1) - One of the Warpies was born seemingly normal in a Karere hospital. However, the boy suddenly turned bright blue and exploded, destroying much of the hospital and killing his parents and staff members.

(Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis#1 (fb) - BTS) - The town of Karere experienced a flood of special births that read like horror stories: boneless babies born with speech, babies who were literally difficult to see, who vibrated or were partially unsubstantial. Other stories reported of babies who hung in the air like balloons and babies who vomited acid. The news reached King T'Challa in Wakanda who contacted Storm of the X-Men to intervene as T'Challa was funding Mutantes Sans Frontiers who in turn funded the X-Men. Mbangawi's leader N'Dingi, formerly known as Doctor Crocodile, also learned of the mysterious births. He quickly realized they could be Warpies and sent his soldiers out to secure the town of Karere in preparation for his arrival.

(Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis#2 (fb) - BTS) - Before N'Dingi's soldiers could carry out their orders, Mutantes Sans Frontiers had arrived in Karere. The relief workers set up shop in the burned out hospital.

(Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis#2) - The X-Men arrived in Karere and after dealing with the soldiers they were greeted by Dr. Helene St. Just who showed the heroes to the Warpies. After seeing the situation Beast took command of the expedition and ordered the Sans Frontiers workers to help him collect histories and case notes to make full examinations of every child present. Even though the X-Men believed the babies to be mutants, Beast couldn't help but feel they were something else entirely. After examining the blood of one of the babies, he discovered traces of ghost box radiation (radiation from transuniversal travel) which proved they weren't mutants. Just then, the soldiers returned with Joshua "Doctor Crocodile" N'Dingi who recognized the newborns were Warpies. He immediately ordered their execution.

(Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis#3) - As Emma dealt with N'Dingi's forces, Doc Crocodile told the origin of the Warpies, explaining the working of the Jaspers (time) warp and how it affected the infants' nature, making them a threat for their environment. Before the X-Men or N'Dingi could act they were interrupted by one of the soldiers: Earth-10083's Jim Jaspers had been found and detained. Moments later, the Furies of Earth-10083 arrived in Mbangawi.

(Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis#4 - BTS) - The X-Men and N'Dingi joined forces to battle the Furies.

(Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis#5 - BTS) - After the heroes successfully dealt with the Furies, N'Dingi decided to take care of the root of the problem. Before the X-Men could act, N'Dingi executed Jaspers to prevent further radiation bursts. He promised the X-Men he would try to care and contain the Warpies without killing them.

The Warpies received a profile in the X-Men: Earth's Mutant Heroes handbook.

Altough the Warpies were heavily featured on the covers of Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis they really didn't play a big part in the comics themselves. And speaking of Xenogenesis, I will never understand why Warren Ellis went through all this trouble to create new Warpies when Ben Raab had finally dealt with them in 2001. As explained in the issues of Excalibur the Warpies returned to normalcy after all energies had been removed from Earth so this new generation of Warpies will also return to normal now that Jim Jaspers of Earth-10083 has been killed. Unless another source like Excalibur's lighthouse would sustain the alterations.

Despite the statement that the Warpies had been unborn children, given the apparent ages of Warpies we saw, either some teens and adults also ended up Warpies, or else some of them aged very rapidly to maturity. The handbook entry notes they are "predominantly children" rather than all children. It is feasible that some of those rounded up weren't Warpies, but rather Inhumans, mutants, etc. - despite Michael's scanning equipment hopefully preventing such misdiagnoses, if an RCX agent was sent to collect a Warpie with potentially dangerous powers, and found their target was really a mutant, the agent would probably still collect the target anyway. -- Loki

(Excalibur I#65) - When Excalibur and a large group of Warpies finally took a stand against Peter and his regime, Bison and the others were summoned by Butane and ordered to defend Peter. During the big fight Captain Britain finally defeated Peter who then called out for Butane, Bison and Oak to help him but they refused as they realized he had lied to them. With Peter defeated, the former R.C.X. agents Gabriel and Michael vowed to take care of all the Warpies.

Butane

Butane was a Warpie who possessed superhuman strength (Class 10) and a body burning with inner fire.

(Excalibur I#64 (fb) - BTS) - Butane was one of the many Warpies living at the Cloud Nine facility. He was considered one of Peter's elite forces.

(Excalibur I#64) - After Peter had taken Captain Britain (who had recently lost his powers) prisoner, he'd hoped to convince the hero to fight on their behalf. But Britain became violent when he spotted his fiancee Meggan inside a vat of regenerative fluids (this turned out to be merely a hologram, Meggan's body had already been moved to a secure level with the other prisoners). Peter nevertheless asked nearby Warpies to defend him. Butane, Oak, Aberdeen, Pumice and Cabbage came to his aid. Luckily, this display of force calmed the Captain down long enough for Peter to try and sell him his lies filled tale.

(Excalibur I#65) - When Captain Britain smashed a piece of machinery the hologram of Meggan faded, enraging the hero even more. Butane and Pumice quickly reacted by punching the hero down to the floor. But when he refused to surrender, Peter ordered Oak and the other elite Warpies to beat him up. When Captain Britain was beaten seemingly to death, Peter was warned by Tadpole that Excalibur had escaped and a Warpies revolt was taking place. Butane and the others quickly made their way to join the big fight. When Captain Britain (who had been restored by Roma) finally defeated Peter who then called out for Butane, Oak and Bison to help him they refused since they realized he had lied to them. With Peter defeated, the former R.C.X. agents Gabriel and Michael vowed to take care of all the Warpies.

comments: Butane was portrayed as being yellow in Excalibur I#64. Perhaps the color of his flames change the more aggressive he becomes.

(Excalibur I#63) - Peter asked Nightcrawler to participate in one of these special training sessions. The room generated an interactive hologram that Nightcrawler had to fight while Iris and several other Warpies used their powers to monitor Nightcrawler's metabolic activity. As Nightcrawler fought the hologram, Iris' raw nerve impulses were fed through her backpack into Cloud Nine's mainframe. But when Nightcrawler used his teleportation to escape one of the holograms, the flash temporarily blinded Iris which was cause to abort the session.

comments: Iris' full powers were revealed in the X-Men: Earth's Mutant Heroes handbook. It goes without saying that her name also refers to the part of the eye that catches light.

With their target down, the team delivered their prisoner to Cloud Nine.

(Excalibur I#65) - When Excalibur managed to break free of their imprisonment, Lodestone and several other of Peter's elite teams were summoned by Luke (Peter's right hand man) to recapture the heroes. Serpents

The Serpents were a group of (approximately 26) Warpies who, apart from their obvious deformities didn't possess any superhuman abilities. These Warpies were deemed too dangerous to interact with others because they would attack and occassionally even devour both Warpies and humans alike. To contain them, they were placed inside the so-called Snake Pit within the Cloud Nine compound. A force wall surrounded it, so they couldn't break free.

(Excalibur I#62) - When the British hero team Excalibur was taken prisoner by the Seraphim (one of the many Warpies strike teams), the force wall generator was destroyed during the struggle, allowing the Serpents to break free. Randomly attacking the first thing they saw, the Serpents assaulted Nightcrawler, though he eluded them because of his martial arts training. But when Kurt noticed the vicious Serpents tried to capture his unconscious teammates Shadowcat and Cerise he went into a violent rage and managed to defeat the strongest amongst the Serpents, forcing the others to retreat in fear. Nightcrawler then realized most of them were just children in terrible pain. The Serpents were most likely returned to confinement by the Advocates (Peter's personal Warpies squad).

But when Nightcrawler used his teleportation to escape one of the holograms the flash temporarily blinded Sonar and the session was aborted.

comments: The extent of Sonar's powers were revealed in the X-Men: Earth's Mutant Heroes handbook.

Sponge

Sponge was a Warpie that possessed the ability to fly and absorb energy. Her yellow skinned body was shaped like a balloon.

(Excalibur I#63 (fb) - BTS) - Sponge was one of the many Warpies within the Cloud Nine facility. Because of her power she was chosen alongside Static and Syphon to keep captive superhumans in check by draining their metahuman energies.

(Excalibur I#63) - When the Seraphim had successfully captured Nightcrawler, Shadowcat and Cerise of Excalibur, Sponge was assigned to Cerise. Sponge followed Cerise during the day, while Peter gave Excalibur a tour of the facility. She was present when Excalibur witnessed the Warpies who were put in suspended animation to halt their regression, when they met the Warpie workforce and even later when Nightcrawler took part in a training program.

(Excalibur I#64) - Sponge still kept an eye on Cerise while resident genetics genius Dr. Nicholas did a full scan on Nightcrawler who received a visit from several Warpie children such as Gourd and Skink who were impressed when the hero lifted his weight a hundred times.

(Excalibur I#65) - Still in Cloud Nine's research laboratory Dr. Nicholas was finishing up his work with Nightcrawler, Cerise and "Shadowcat" (who was replaced by Lump). Realizing something was wrong with "Shadowcat" Nightcrawler decided to retreat to his private chamber and took Cerise with him. To rid themselves of their assigned Warpies Sponge and Syphon, Nightcrawler took Cerise into his room, passionately kissing her. Buying into the ruse, Sponge and Syphon decided to give them some privacy for the next couple of hours. As soon as they left, the two heroes decided to snoop around the facility. When Excalibur managed to break free of their imprisonment, Sponge and several other of Peter's elite teams were summoned by Luke (Peter's right hand) to recapture the heroes. However, Sponge and a number of younger Warpies were frightened and tried to escape until Luke tried to force them back into the fight, calling them "mutinous brats". Just then Nightcrawler knocked out Luke, opening the way for Sponge and the other young ones to escape the all-out brawl. On their way out, Syphon alarmed Prune and Wire that Peter's elite forces were fighting Excalibur. Prune and Wire decided it was time to help the heroes and rallied all other Warpies to finally take a stand against Peter and his regime. The battle ended when Captain Britain finally defeated Peter, who in desperation called out for Oak, Butane and Bison to help him. They refused since they realized he had lied to them. With Peter defeated, the former R.C.X. agents Gabriel and Michael vowed to take care of all the Warpies from now on.

Static

Static was a Warpie that possessed the ability to fly and disrupt power usage. Beside his ability his skin was yellow.

(Excalibur I#63 (fb) - BTS) - Static was one of the many Warpies within the Cloud Nine facility. Because of his power he was chosen alongside Syphon and Sponge to keep captive superhumans in check by draining their metahuman energies.

(Excalibur I#63) - When the Seraphim had successfully captured Nightcrawler, Shadowcat and Cerise of Excalibur, Static was assigned to Shadowcat. Static followed Shadowcat during the day, while Peter gave Excalibur a tour of the facility. He was present when Excalibur witnessed the Warpies who were put in suspended animation to halt their regression, when they met the Warpie workforce and even later when Nightcrawler took part in a training program.

(Excalibur I#64) - Static still kept an eye on Shadowcat while resident genetics genius Dr. Nicholas did a full scan on the hero who received a visit from several Warpie children such as Gourd and Skink who were impressed when the hero lifted his weight a hundred times. Not much later she was recaptured thanks to Ferret. Upon learning of Kitty's capture Peter decided to keep up his ruse and had the Warpie Lump take on Kitty's appearance. Lump made his way to Nightcrawler the shapeshifter tried to convince Nightcrawler of the R.C.X.'s good intentions, however Nightcrawler wasn't fooled by the appearance but decided to play along. Static however, would still have thought it to be the real Shadowcat.

"Shadowcat" and Static however decided to stay behind at Dr. Nicholas' side. When Excalibur managed to break free of their imprisonment, Static and several other of Peter's elite teams were summoned by Luke (Peter's right hand) to recapture the heroes. However, Static and a number of younger Warpies were frightened and tried to escape until Luke tried to force them back into the fight, calling them "mutinous brats". Just then Nightcrawler knocked out Luke, opening the way for Static and the other young ones to escape the all-out brawl.

Syphon

Syphon was a Warpie that possessed the ability to selectively drain other's powers. Beside his ability he didn't seem to possess any fingers or toes.

(Excalibur I#63 (fb) - BTS) - Syphon was one of the many Warpies within the Cloud Nine facility. Because of his power he was chosen alongside Static and Sponge to keep captive superhumans in check by draining their metahuman energies.

(Excalibur I#63) - When the Seraphim had successfully captured Nightcrawler, Shadowcat and Cerise of Excalibur, Syphon was assigned to Nightcrawler. Syphon followed Nightcrawler during the day, while Peter gave Excalibur a tour of the facility. He was present when Excalibur witnessed the Warpies who were put in suspended animation to halt their regression, when they met the Warpies workforce and even later when Nightcrawler took part in a training program.

(Excalibur I#64) - Syphon still kept an eye on Nightcrawler while resident genetics genius Dr. Nicholas did a full scan on the hero who received a visit from several Warpies children such as Gourd and Skink who were impressed when the hero lifted his weight a hundred times.

Tadpole

Tadpole was a Warpie who had amphibian-like skin. Besides his apparent look, he possessed no superpowers.

(Excalibur I#65 (fb) - BTS) - Tadpole was one of the many Warpies within the Cloud Nine facility, loyal to Peter and apparently had access to all of Cloud Nine's levels.

(Excalibur I#65) - When Excalibur finally broke free of their imprisonment, many of the Warpies decided to help the heroes in their fight against the elite forces of the Warpies. Tadpole, however stayed loyal to Peter and after making his way over to him, warned him of what had transpired.

Wire

Wire was one of the more adult-looking Warpies, his skin was grey, his hair was white and he had a scar resembling a star on his right eye. Beside his appearance he didn't seem to posses any superhuman abilities.

(Excalibur I#65 (fb) - BTS) - Wire was one of the many Warpies within the Cloud Nine facility. He was apparently part of a workforce in the process of extending the already gigantic facility.

(Excalibur I#65) - While working on site with his good friend Prune, they suddenly noticed several of the younger Warpies fleeing the area. When asked, the young Syphon explained that Peter's elite forces were fighting Excalibur. Prune and Wire decided it was time to help the heroes and rallied all other Warpies to finally take a stand against Peter and his regime. After Prune had rescued Shadowcat Wire showed the heroine the group of Warpies they had rallied to join their cause. He was then present when Captain Britain and Nightcrawler finally defeated Peter and the former R.C.X. agents Gabriel and Michael vowed to take care of all the Warpies.

comments: It goes without saying that "Wire", both in appearance and name, is a thinly veiled homage to Cable.
