History: (Avengers VII#13) -
Following the burning of the Great Dead Forest at the hands of the
Mephisto-manipulated Gorgilla Clan, the prehistoric Iron Fist (Fan Fei)
encountered the alpha of the Gorgilla Clan, the Ape King. Swinging his
giant diamond club at Iron Fist, the Ape King was eventually defeated
when Iron Fist shattered his diamond club, the shards of which pierced
the Ape King's right side. Soon after met by the demon Mephisto (in the
form of a snake), the Ape King ignorantly followed the snake into a
cave, where Mephisto led the Ape King into touching the Infinity Power
Stone. His injuries healed by transmutation into crystal by the Power
Stone, the Ape King later confronted Iron Fist on his own, knocking her
back with a Power Stone-enforced punch to the ground. Fiercely fighting
Iron Fist, the Ape King used the Power Stone to empower a punch that
Iron Fist met with her own fist, causing a power backlash explosion
that launched the seriously injured Iron Fist miles away.
(Avengers VII#31) - While
attempting to tempt a time-displaced Iron Man (Tony Stark), who was
stuck in 1,000,000 B.C., Mephisto sent the Ape King to attack Tony
Stark in a cave he was hiding out in. Recognizing the Power Stone and
the Ape King as an attempt by Mephisto to tempt him into dying, Stark
was left for dead by the Ape King following the attack.
Comments: Created by Jason Aaron and Andrea Sorrentino.
The name of the Ape King's Gorgilla Clan suggests
that perhaps the modern day monster Gorgilla
may be a descendant of the Ape King's clan or perhaps even a
time-displaced member of the Clan from prehistoric days.
Seeing as how the profile on Gorgilla
says he is a Deviant genetic experiment and the Official Handbooks say
that the Celestial experiments on the ape-like creatures they captured
was to test their mutation potential (which is why Deviant children
don't resemble their parents), there is is no way short of cloning for
there to be a race of Gorgillas. Plus, the Ape King resembles a
modern-day gorilla and Gorgilla does not. - Snood
Big thanks to Mike Fichera for helping approximate the weight of the Ape King!

CLARIFICATIONS:
Ape King has no known connections to:
The Gorgilla Clan was a group of prehistoric,
forest-dwelling proto-apes that attacked nearly anything coming onto
what they deemed to be their territory. When Iron Fist ventured into
their forest, the Gorgilla Clan attacked her and she killed at least
one while protecting a group of cavemen from the Clan. Following their
defeat, the Gorgilla Clan were given the gift of fire by the demon
Mephisto, which they used to burn down most of their forest. Iron Fist
again came to the defense of the local cavemen, fiercely battling the
Gorgilla Clan until she encountered the Ape King.
