History: (Daredevil I#177 (fb) – BTS) – Randolph Winston Cherryh graduated from West Point after serving in the Korean War conflict, for which he received three medals. Later, he was a successful city councilman. Through his political career, he developed relationships with several crime organizations, though he kept this hidden from the public. His primary criminal contact was the Kingpin.
(Untold Tales of Spider-Man I#2) – Cherryh was out on a date when he was attacked from the shadows by Batwing. The scandal soon hit the newspapers and Cherryh offered a $25,000 reward for Batwing's apprehension. Later, Cherryh was ordering his men to triple his security when Spider-Man showed up, offering to help Cherryh set a trap for Batwing, and Cherryh agreed reluctantly. That night, he hosted a rooftop party and when Batwing attacked, he ordered the creature killed but Spider-Man didn't want to hurt the creature. Spider-Man chased it across the skyline as Cherryh ordered a helicopter to pursue them. Cherryh's men soon apprehended Batwing and Cherryh offered Spider-Man the full reward if he just left and let them handle Batwing but Spidey chose to let Batwing go as he webbed up Cherryh's men. Cherryh vowed to make Spider-Man's life a living hell but Spidey simply webbed Cherryh's mouth shut and tossed him in a garbage can.
(Daredevil I#177 (fb) – BTS) – Cherryh announced a run for mayor. As his political ads ran on television, Cherryh read in the Daily Bugle an article in which Ben Urich alleged Cherryh's criminal connections. Cherryh immediately filed a lawsuit against the Daily Bugle.
(Daredevil I#177) – Cherryh furiously confronted the Kingpin, who grabbed Cherryh and brought him to his knees, reminding Cherryh that he was in charge.
(Daredevil I#178 (fb) – BTS) – Cherryh did a media interview about his lawsuit against the Bugle and he expressed his outrage. He also learned that young Sheldon was seeking to blackmail Cherryh, as he had proof of Cherryh's alleged corruptions. Cherryh reported to Kingpin.
(Daredevil I#178) – Kingpin commended Cherryh on his media interview and told him he had plans to take care of Sheldon (who was wanting to raise money for his sister, Tammi Lu). Kingpin's thugs went after Sheldon as well as Matt Murdock and "Foggy" Nelson, the opposing council in Cherryh's court case. In court, Cherryh was represented by Jeryn Hogarth. When Matt Murdock went missing, Power Man and Iron Fist questioned Cherryh, assuming he'd kidnapped him. Cherryh agreed to pay off Sheldon the next day and Cherryh later handed off a bag of diamonds during a busy parade in exchange for the checks from the Kingpin that Sheldon had as proof of Cherryh's connections but a child grabbed the bag and went running, thinking it was candy. Sheldon soon lost the checks after the child swallowed the diamonds.
(Elektra: Black, White, and Blood I#1/2 - BTS) - Working for the Kingpin, Elektra killed several drug dealers working for Randolph Cherryh.
(Daredevil I#179) – Cherryh set up a meeting with Ben Urich at a local gym, where Cherryh had local thugs, including Arnie, assault and threaten Urich. Daredevil intervened and easily waylaid the men, including Cherryh himself, who furiously called Kingpin to set up a meeting in Little Italy the next day. Cherryh showed up for the meeting, unaware that Urich was taking photographs across the street.
(Daredevil I#180 (fb) – BTS) – Cherryh heard that Urich dropped his expose and the Daily Bugle publicly admitted he didn't have proof to back its claims. The election took place and Cherryh got word that he was winning the election.
(Daredevil I#180) – Cherryh was predicted to win by a landslide but the sitting mayor refused to concede just yet. Later, Cherryh won by the greatest landslide the city had ever seen in an election. However, Kingpin ordered Cherryh to publicly admit that he was complicit in the crimes he'd been accused of, dropping the election and remaining unaware that Kingpin's orders were the result of an exchange between Kingpin and Daredevil for Kingpin's wife, Vanessa. As ordered, Cherryh publicly admitted the crimes, saying his conscience wouldn't let him continue, and he gave up all chances of being mayor.
(Daredevil I#192 - BTS) - When Ben Urich
confronted his mentor Jimmy Hughes about taking payments to drop news
stories, Hughes demanded to know who Urich was for judging him,
reminding Urich of stories he had heard of Urich dropping a story on
Randolph Cherryh to save his own life. Urich later brought up his
Cherryh story when discussing his scruples with his wife Doris, who
reminded Urich that there was difference between saving his own life
and letting a criminal take over his life, as Hughes had done.
Comments: Created by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson.
His surname is almost certainly a nod to SF author C.J. Cherryh, especially since, AFAIK, that surname isn't one that exists in real life outside of C.J. herself. Her real surname is Cherry, but when she started writing her editor told her that if she published as Carolyn Janice Cherry (her actual name) then people would assume she was a romance novelist. Hence using her initials and adding a silent H to the end of her surname. As she wryly noted, when her younger brother David Cherry also got some SF stories published (he's more commonly an artist) no one felt the need to suggest his surname sounded like a romance writer.
