History: (Avengers Halloween Special#1/4 (fb)) - In Paris, France circa 1881 A.D., as opera singer Marie Castiglione's fame grew, her understudy Christine became jealous and complained to her lover Raoul, whose goons promised to take care of Marie. Not long after, Christine accompanied Raoul and his goons to murder Marie Castiglione and when they arrived at the Castiglione home, Christine announced that she had been asked to stay home but had insisted on joining the goons to remind Marie that she was going to be killed because of Christine's wishes. After fatally injuring Marie and her children, Christine and the goons left the dying family to be found by Marie's police officer husband. Some time later, while in the Palais Garnier opera house, Christine bragged to Raoul about how she would be taking her place as a star in one week and how she had Raoul to thank for it. Promising to make Raoul proud, Christine gloated that Marie's ghost would be watching, lonely, for all eternity, unaware that Marie's husband was overhearing the conversation from the French Catacombs beneath the Palais Garnier.

(Avengers Halloween Special#1/4) - One week later, on the night that Christine made her operatic debut, she was stalked by Marie's husband (now the Punisher of the Opera), who dropped a chandelier atop Christine, killing her before tracking down and killing Raoul and his goons in revenge for Marie's murder.

Marie Castiglione's children were never identified on-panel but for the purposes of this profile, I have assumed they were "Frankie" and "Lisa," like their Earth-616 counterparts.

Christine's story seems to be a parody of the novel "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux (1868-1927). The novel's female protagonist is Christine Daaé, a young soprano singer from Sweden. She attempts to start a singing career in France, but finds herself stalked by Erik, the Phantom of the Opera. Christine's lover in the novel is Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny (Raoul, Viscount de Chagny), a young French aristocrat and former childhood acquaintance of Christine. The novel implies that he will receive a larger part of the family inheritance than originally expected, because Erik/the Phantom caused the death of Raoul's older brother and legal guardian, Philippe Georges Marie, Count de Chagny. - Dim I Nticoudis
