Halloween Special#1/4 (fb)) - Raoul attended a party to celebrate opera
singer Marie Castiglione, where Raoul's lover Christine became jealous
of the attention Marie was getting and remarked that it should be them
getting the attention. Agreeing, Raoul replied that Christine should be
no one's mere understudy and that they were all meant for better
things. Taking a cue from Raoul's words, les Gars assured
Raoul that they would take care of it and Marie would singing in an
entirely different way when they were done with her. Later that night,
Raoul and his men (and Christine, whom Raoul had suggested she stay
behind) visited Marie Castiglione's home and killed Marie and her two
children, leaving them behind to die in the arms of Marie's husband. A
short time later, Raoul and Christine were in the Palais Garnier opera
house gloating about how their murder allowed Christine to take Marie's
place, unaware that Marie's husband was beneath them in the French
Catacombs hearing the entire conversation.
(Avengers Halloween Special#1/4) - One week later,
Raoul and les Gars sat in the audience
section and listened to Raoul's lover Christine practice opera for her
stage debut. Raoul remarked that Christine sounded perfect and les Gars
agreed, prompting Raoul to reply that they should all be proud that
Christine was finally making her debut after it had cost them all so
much to bring her there. During Christine's debut, she was killed by a
falling chandelier cut by Marie's husband, who dropped from the rafters
and killed les Gars, terrifying Raoul
into fleeing. Catching up to Raoul, Marie's husband shot Raoul at point
blank range, killing him to avenge Marie's death.

Raoul's story seems to be a parody of the novel "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux (1868-1927). The novel's female protagonist is Christine Daaé, a young soprano singer from Sweden. She attempts to start a singing career in France, but finds herself stalked by Erik, the Phantom of the Opera. Christine's lover in the novel is Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny (Raoul, Viscount de Chagny), a young French aristocrat and former childhood acquaintance of Christine. The novel implies that he will receive a larger part of the family inheritance than originally expected, because Erik/the Phantom caused the death of Raoul's older brother and legal guardian, Philippe Georges Marie, Count de Chagny. - Dim I Nticoudis
