History:
(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Phoenix Saga - Part I: Sacrifice" (fb) - BTS) - Eric the Red, an agent for the Shi'ar Empire, was stationed in the Milky Way Galaxy where he spent years upon years, hoping for the opportunity to serve his emperor. During these years, Eric the Red familiarized himself with Earth, even spending time amongst humankind.
(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Phoenix Saga - Part I: Sacrifice" (fb) - BTS) - When Shi'ar Emperor D'Ken's rebellious sister Lilandra stole the M'Kraan Crystal, D'Ken ordered Eric the Red to locate and retrieve her. Eric the Red took the Starcore Eagle station as his base, forcing the space station crew to follow his command, hypnotizing them with a "cerebral lock" and even mounted the space station with an energy weapon, capable of disabling Lilandra's star-cruiser.
(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Phoenix Saga - Part I: Sacrifice") - Learning a new spaceshuttle with solar physicist Peter Corbeau was on its way to Starcore Eagle Station to study a unique solar vortex, Eric the Red planned to subdue them when they reached the space station. Eric the Red, and Corbeau, for that matter, were unaware Corbeau's space crew was replaced by the mutant heroes the X-Men following Professor X's orders to get aboard the spaceshuttle.
When Corbeau's spaceshuttle arrived at Starcore Eagle Station, Eric the Red gassed the new arrivals, rendering them unconscious. Then when he inspected them, he realized Corbeau's men had been replaced by the X-Men and planned to blow them out of an air lock while taking the time to reveal his origins to Corbeau. It was the X-Man Jean Grey who saved them as she used her telekineses to close the air lock. Eric the Red and the X-Men came to blows just as Lilandra's ship arrived from the wormhole, causing Eric the Red's weapon to miss it's target. Certain he couldn't defeat the X-Men, Eric the Red and the mind-controlled astronauts fled. While doing so, they were contacted by Shi'ar Emperor D'Ken asking if he'd fulfilled the mission, Eric the Red assured the emperor he would deal with Lilandra's agents. Eric the Red followed Lilandra's starcruiser but was unable to destroy the ship just as the X-Men and Peter Corbeau piloted back home as well. During their flight Jean Grey used her mutant abilities to keep the crew and herself safe, unable to do so she telepathically cried out for help, which was answered by the cosmic force and protector of the M'Kraan Crystal, the Phoenix.
(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Phoenix Saga - Part II: The Dark Shroud") - Eric the Red hid in Earth's atmosphere and had sent one of the mind-controlled astronauts to shadow the X-Men. As such Eric the Red learned how Charles Xavier's dark side attacked his own team members and reasoned he would be the key to capturing Lilandra.
(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Phoenix Saga - Part III: Cry of the Banshee" (fb) - BTS) - Determined to serve his emperor, Eric the Red hired supervillains Juggernaut and Black Tom to follow Charles Xavier to Muir Island, certain Lilandra would contact the powerful telepath.
(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Phoenix Saga - Part III: Cry of the Banshee") - Eric the Red made his way to Cassidy Keep in Ireland as Juggernaut and Black Tom had successfully captured Lilandra. Expecting a large sum, Black Tom welcomed the Shi'ar agent but was struck down as Eric the Red had no intention of paying the duo. However, just then, Juggernaut appeared and grabbed him, squeezing the life out of his body. Eric the Red then ordered the mind-controlled astronauts to attack Juggernaut but they were easily defeated after which he admitted his defeat, promising to pay the large sum of ten million dollars. As promised, Juggernaut delivered Lilandra, tied to a chair. Eric the Red immediately interrogated the princess for the location of the M'Kraan Crystal but was unable to stop her from sending Charles Xavier a telepathic message to reveal their location.
Not long after the X-Men and Banshee (Black Tom's brother) arrived to rescue Lilandra, during the fight that followed Eric the Red fought Gambit. Realizing they wouldn't win against the mutant heroes, Eric the Red ordered Juggernaut to bring Lilandra to his ship. But just as the X-Men made their way to the Castle's roof another appeared, Gladiator of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. Pleasantly surprised by his arrival, Eric the Red welcomed Gladiator who was quick to note Eric the Red had no honor, calling the man a failure. Juggernaut tried to attack Gladiator but was easily launched into the Atlantic Ocean (see comments). Surprised by his might, Eric the Red stood by as the X-Men tried to stop him from taking Lilandra after which the Phoenix appeared, stating Lilandra was under her protection. Seeing a chance to escape, Eric the Red quickly boarded his ship and took off after which the mighty Phoenix defeated the powerful Gladiator.
(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Phoenix Saga - Part IV: The Starjammers") - Wishing an audience with Emperor D'Ken, Gladiator brought Eric the Red and his ship to the emperor's starcruiser. Emperor D'Ken expressed his disappointment in Eric the Red's failure after which Gladiator revealed Lilandra and the X-Men were helped by the Phoenix, the protector of the M'Kraan Crystal. Just then a hologram appeared of Corsair, leader of the pirate Starjammers offering him the M'Kraan Crystal and the X-Men leader Cyclops in exchange for a large sum of money (unbeknownst to Eric the Red, Gladiator and D'Ken, Corsair planned to use Cyclops to assassinate the emperor). Eric the Red stood by as the Imperial Guard entered the room and D'Ken ordered Gladiator to destroy Corsair and the Starjammers when they would arrive.
Not long after, Corsair arrived with the M'Kraan Crystal and Cyclops while Eric the Red and Gladiator stood beside the emperor. However just when Corsair wanted Cyclops to attack, Gladiator ordered the Imperial Guard to seize them. At the same moment, the Phoenix, Lilandra and the X-Men arrived to safe Cyclops and the crystal. As a fierce battle between X-Men and Imperial Guard erupted, Eric the Red tried to hide. In the end when the X-Men successfully took the crystal, Eric the Red re-appeared again and tried to shoot Cyclops in the back but was shot by Corsair after which the X-Men seemingly escaped. Believing to have escaped the X-Men were in for a shock when Emperor D'Ken had taken the crystal, using it to empower himself.

In a subtle nod to the "Phoenix Saga - Part III: Cry of the Banshee" episode a small 1 second cameo of Juggernaut can be seen in Fantastic Four "Nightmare in Green" (Earth-534834) when he's seen rising out of the ocean, pulling himself up onto New York City's Brooklyn Bridge.
