History:
(Monsters Unleashed II#3 (fb) - BTS) - Thousands of years ago, the
Leviathon Mother, a powerful alien beast who can summon monsters to
serve her, woke and summoned monsters from across the universe to serve
her as her Leviathon Horde. They ravaged a world of the Universal
Inhumans, defeating one of them who could summon monsters. Triumphant
the Leviathon Mother entered a deep sleep for many years to follow.
(Monsters Unleashed II#3 (fb) - BTS) - Sensing the waking of the Leviathon Mother, the Leviathon Tide assembled again and began rushing toward Earth, which they would raze and prepare for their leader.
(Monsters Unleashed II#1/Avengers VII#1.MU) - In Boston, the first of the Leviathons landed, and many more attacked around the globe, with super heroes fighting back, defeating monster after monster along the way, including the Avengers, the X-Men, Black Panther and Shuri, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Inhumans, and the Champions.
(Invincible Iron Man IV#3) - Ironheart defeated one of the Leviathons in Chicago.
(Spider-Man/Deadpool#1.MU) - Spider-Man and Deadpool defeated a massive Leviathon near Toronto.
(All-New X-Men II#1.MU) - In the swamp, one Leviathon consumed the super-villain Dr. Chimera before the X-Men killed the beast.
(Champions II#1.MU) - Two Leviathons--one made of fire and another, a giant green acid-spitting lizard--attacked a national forest, but the Champions and the Freelancers worked together to repel them, then another Leviathon (a giant eyeball) attacked a Roxxon platform.
(Monsters Unleashed II#2) - Dozens more monsters landed on Earth, as more heroes responded, including Alpha Flight, the Winter Guard, Black Panther, the X-Men, the Inhumans, the Champions, the Avengers, Deadpool, Doctor Strange, Captain America, the Defenders, and Daredevil. Moon Girl built a translation device that helped her understand the Leviathons, and she learned that they were preparing the way for the Leviathon Mother. Kid Kaiju then summoned dozens of monsters to fight back against the Leviathons, including Vandoom's Monster, Fin Fang Foom, the Thing that Crawled by Night, Green Thing, Gorgilla, Zzutak, Metallo, Blip, Oog, Bruttu, Creature from the Black Bog, Crawling Creature, Goom, Googam, Tim Bo Baa, Monster, Ulvar, Rommbu, Monsteroso, Pildorr the Plunderer, Monstrom, and Quogg.
(Monsters Unleashed II#3) - The Leviathon Tide battled the assembled monsters, including Zetora, Klagg, Insect Man, Metallo, Monstro, the Creature from Krogarr, Sporr, Green Thing, the Abominable Snowman, Orrgo, Moomba, Kraa the Unhuman, the Thing that Crawled by Night, and Vandoom's Monster, as the human heroes sought to rescue civilians. Soon, the Leviathon Tide was defeated, if only briefly. Across the universe, the Leviathon Mother awakened and read the minds of her monsters about the events on Earth. She mentally summoned hundreds of her monsters and began making her way toward Earth.
(Doctor Strange IV#1.MU) - During the massive battle with the Leviathons, Doctor Strange teleported one of the monsters away as it fought with Goom and Googam. Later, Strange and Googam defeated another monster in Nunavut.
(Uncanny Inhumans#1.MU) - Two giant monsters attacked Rome, and Human Torch and the Inhumans fought back, saving as many civilians as possible. One pursued Swain and Crystal, and Swain formed an empathic bond with the beast and asserted control over it after a long battle. Swain took time to get back to herself after shaking off the monster's aggression.
(Guardians of the Galaxy IV#1.MU) - The Guardians and the Avengers fought off more of the Leviathons. Later, the Guardians defeated the Furnax, a fire monster that had once plagued Planet X.
(Monsters Unleashed II#4) - The Leviathon Tide attacked multiple sites on Earth, as the heroes of Earth and Kei Kawade's summoned monsters fought back against them at every turn.
(Monsters Unleashed II#5) - Elsa Bloodstone killed another Leviathon as the Mother led the rest of her horde, some whom she called her servitors, in a battle with Earth's heroes and monsters. Kid Kaiju soon created six new monsters to face the Mother, including Fireclaw, Scragg, Mekara, Aegis, Hi-Vo, and Slizzik. The Leviathon Mother killed Fireclaw before Kei changed the others into the massive combined monster Smasher, and it savagely attacked and defeated the Mother, seemingly killing her as her Leviathons fled in fear.
(Monsters Unleashed III#2 (fb) - BTS) - The Intelligencia kidnapped some of the remaining Leviathons and experimented on them, granting some the ability to combine into a larger composite monster.
(Monsters Unleashed III#1 (fb) - BTS) - Under the control of the Mole Man, the Leviathons attacked Corpus Christi, Texas, and Elsa Bloodstone, Kid Kaiju, and his monsters arrived to fight back.
(Monsters Unleashed III#2) - The Leviathons savagely fought Kid Kaiju's monsters until they lay defeated.
(Monsters Unleashed III#4) - The Intelligencia sent more Leviathons to attack the island of Mu, putting Deanna and Minouru Kawade and Gloria Clark in danger. When Kid Kaiju sent his five monsters to face them, he combined them into Smasher, but then the Leviathons combined into their own super monster.
(Monsters Unleashed III#5) - The super monster, which emitted signals blocking telecommunications, savagely fought Smasher, emitting acidic magma mucus during the fight, sending a swarm of powerful insect monsters to attack civilians (though Elsa Bloodstone and Mole Man held them off), and sending out electric wires from his eyes. Though the super monster stole Smasher's sword, Smasher defeated it with a concussion barrage, separating the creature back into its individual forms. Smasher broke apart, and Kei's five monsters restrained the Leviathons.
Comments: Created by Cullen Bunn, Steve McNiven, and Jay Leisten.
One thing I love about the Leviathon Tide is that each of the monsters is so incredibly unique, with different powers, natures, and vulnerabilities. The artists took a lot of creative license to create giant threatening monsters that provided real threats to the heroes they faced. Many of these monsters (the Furnax, for example) have their own backstories and histories, as they have to do something while the Leviathon Mother is asleep for hundreds of years. It is very likely that some of these Leviathons remain on Earth.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Leviathon Tide has no known connections to:
Leviathon Mother (Monsters Unleashed II#3 (fb) - BTS) - The Leviathan Mother is an ancient interstellar monster that wakes every few thousand years to find worlds to suck dry, to destroy, and to nest upon. She summoned huge hordes of monsters from across the universe and sent them to raze various planets. The monsters razed some of the worlds of the Universal Inhumans, and the Leviathon Mother soon followed, but a Universal Inhuman woman used her powers to summon monsters to defend her planet, though the Leviathon Mother soon defeated her as well. (Monsters Unleashed II#1 - BTS) - Monsters from the Leviathon Horde attacked Earth, but many were defeated by Earth heroes. (Monsters Unleashed II#2 - BTS) - More monsters battled heroes on Earth, and a new Inhuman, Kei Kawade, summoned many other monsters to defeat the Leviathons. (Monsters Unleashed II#3) - The Leviathons were repelled by the Kawade-summoned monsters. They returned to the Leviathon Mother, who was awakening from her desecrated nest, and they gave her their memories of what had happened, and she summoned more monsters to attack the Earth. (Monsters Unleashed II#4) - Leviathon Mother directed her monsters to attack Earth, and she monitored their progress. Leviathon Mother soon arrived on Earth. (Monsters Unleashed II#5 (fb) - BTS) - The Leviathon Mother defeated many of Earth's heroes with ease, including the Avengers (Captain America/Sam Wilson, Vision, Thor/Jane Foster, Hercules, Spider-Man/Peter Parker), the Champions (Nova/Sam Alexander, Hulk/Amadeus Cho, Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan), S.H.I.E.L.D. (Maria Hill, Phil Coulson, others), Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), and the Inhumans (Karnak, Medusa) as well as many of the conjured monsters. (Monsters Unleashed II#5) - As the Leviathon Mother demanded that the summoner reveal himself, Fin Fang Foom attacked her, though she soon defeated the dragon. The Leviathon Mother soon found the summoner, who turned out to be a small boy, Kei Kawade, and he drew a group of original monsters to attack her, including Fireclaw, Slizzik, Hi-Vo, Scragg, Aegis, and Mekara. Leviathon Mother killed Fireclaw with a blade through the chest, but then Kei Kawade formed the other five monsters into the massive Smasher, who soon defeated the alien queen, evading her energy blasts and sharp blades and cutting her in half. --Monsters Unleashed II#1 ([3 (fb)], [1-2], 3, 4, [5 (fb)], 5 |
"Monster-summoning Universal Inhuman" (Monsters Unleashed II#3 (fb) ) - A member of the Universal Inhumans, one of the Centaurians, an Inhuman woman developed the powers to summon monsters from across the universe by drawing constellations in the air. Wielding a sword, she inspired these monsters to fight back against the Leviathon Horde, but she and her forces were eventually overwhelmed, and she perished at the hands of the Leviathon Mother. --Monsters Unleashed II#3 (fb) |
