History:
(Battlefront#48/4 (fb)) - John Mason came from a
small town and admired the local athlete, William "Big Bill" Haley. He
joined the war effort against Imperial Germany during World War I and
farewelled his fiancee Gloria. Mason was trained in firing various
types of guns.
(Battlefront#48/4) - In his first taste of military
action, Mason joined Haley at the frontline against German forces,
dodging gunfire and briefly stunned from explosions. He was slightly
shaken by Mason's suggested friendly rivalry for his fiancee. But
seeing the enemy ahead, Mason charged as he'd been trained. German
machine-gun fire separated him and several soldiers from the rest of
the battalion. Finding himself next to a machine-gun nest, he clobbered
the Germans with his rifle, then shot the neighboring nest, before
turning the machine-gun against other German posts. Seizing the
opportunity, Mason's battalion pushed ahead and overran the German
forces. The lieutenant promised to recommend Mason for a decoration,
although Mason was surprised at awarding his "logical" behavior.
Recognizing it was ordinary people who rise above themselves in
emergencies, his battle action renewed his self-confidence.

Created by uncredited writer and Reed Crandall (pencils & inks).
Mason's nationality is not defined and with the
"Tommy"-style helmet, at first I thought he was British. But the
uniform appears American
with the "Brodie" helmet.

William Haley
William "Big Bill" Haley came from the same town as
John Mason. Haley was admired by many and considered a "catch" by local
women with his family's wealth and influence (his father was the
mayor), and being a successful athlete. He joined Mason on the
frontline against German forces in World War I. Haley hinted that he
would compete with Mason for Mason's fiancee's affections. But Mason's
heroic action against German machine gun nests earned admiration from
Haley.
