Powers/Abilities: Melmacula can shapeshift his
body into various forms. This ranges from a shadowy bat-like form that
can traverse space to a partial bat-like form of a large bat with his
head, as well as a wolf (although this was more a sleazy human form). He mostly has the usual physical
appearance of a Melmac native (compared to humans), with heightened
immunity, an extended lifespan (usually set at 650 years but
potentially longer in his case) and a savage appetite, although in his
case it is solely based on sucking out cholesterol from Melmacian throat
veins using his elongated incisors; however, certain impurities in this
can poison him. Melmacula let his nails grow for a claw-like
appearance.
He was feared by Melmacians and he used this to
his advantage to scare them into submission.
Height: Variable (4'1" in Melmacian form)
Weight: Unrevealed
Eyes: Black with white iris
Hair: Blue fur
History:
(ALF Annual#2/4 (fb) - BTS) - On planet Melmac,
Melmacula was the King of Hampires, Melmacian-looking creatures that
sucked the cholesterol out of the throat veins of normal Melmacians,
leaving the victims in a zombie-like state craving and searching for
fatty foods. Because of this, Hampires had a fearsome reputation but a
herbal defense was found.
(ALF Annual#2/4 (fb)) - The planet Melmac exploded
with Gordon Shumway (later ALF) one of the very few to survive.
Melmacula also escaped, his coffin abode shot into space from the
explosion. Hungry for Melmacian sustenance, he found Shumway's litter
trail in space and transformed into a black bat-like creature until he
found Earth and the Tanner family's house in Los Angeles, Shumway's new home.
(ALF
Annual#2/4) -
Melmacula attacked Shumway in the house, also threatening the Tanner
family members, who defended themselves. Momentarily stunned, Melmacula
was trapped in a food
storage container. Shumway quickly devoured various herbs to protect
himself but
Melmacula had escaped and quietly transformed into a sleazy human form
that menaced Lynn Tanner. The Hampire offered to trade Lynn for Shumway
to eat from and Shumway agreed. However, Shumway's Melmacian defense
of "Scarborough Hair" (parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme) that he had
consumed proved poisonous to Melmacula and he melted into a black
puddle.
The black puddle quickly
solidified. Shumway rolled it up to use as a throwrug in his room in
the attic.
Comments: Created by Michael Gallagher, Dave Manak, Marie Severin.
It's unrevealed exactly how Hampires (effectively Melmacian Vampires) came to be; they could be a mutate, but it's not from being bitten, so they're like a sub-species of Melmacians.
Obviously Melmacula is a play on words of ALF's home
planet Melmac and the human vampire lord Dracula.
Further details on the Melmacian alien species (according to the ALF television show) can be found on a Melmac fansite. No problem!
