Powers/Abilities: After undergoing Terrigenesis, Meruda grew to a massive size and developed the ability to manipulate the elements (including wind and water), and to manipulate sand, from which he created an axe as well as sand creatures to follow him. Meruda's control of the sand allowed him to shape the sand into the form of his own memories. Meruda had training in the mystical arts, knowing how to summon the gods Fenech the Foul, Yakuba the Bloodless and Gawa, Lord of the Undead, through human sacrifice. Meruda appeared to have super-strength and durability. The full extent of his powers is likely unrevealed.

History: (Amazing X-Men II
Annual#1/1 (fb) – BTS) – Meruda grew up in a tribe in Kenya. Years ago,
Meruda saw young Ororo Munroe, the goddess Storm, go after the Black
Panther around the same time that a sandstorm wiped out Meruda's entire
tribe. He grew up believing that Storm was responsible for the death of
his tribe. At some point, Meruda developed skills in summoning dark
gods. After the Terrigen Cloud hit, Meruda emerged transformed and with
super powers related to sand and weather control.

X-Men II Annual#1/1) –
Meruda, determined to get long overdue revenge against Storm, attacked
the tribe containing her family members, killing many including Mumbi
Sefularo. Meruda then kidnapped Ayuba, the cousin of Storm. Meruda
returned to his adopted tribe, where they were setting up a pentagram
and ritual, and various candles and animal parts were placed at each
point. After blasting one of his followers for knocking over a candle,
Meruda tried summoned Fenech the Foul and Yakuba the Bloodless. Just as
the X-Men (Storm, Wolverine, Beast, Nightcrawler, Firestar) arrived,
Meruda summoned Gawa, Lord of the Undead, and Ayuba's spirit left her
body. Meruda did battle with Storm while the X-Men sparred with Gawa.
Meruda shaped the sand into shapes to tell the story of his memories to
Storm then he hit her with her strongest winds and blasts of lightning.
Storm, able to control the elements, overwhelmed Meruda's powers and he
went crashing into the sea. The connection broken, Gawa fell, and
Ayuba's spirit returned to her body.

(Amazing X-Men II Annual#1) – Gawa, Lord of the Undead, was summoned by Meruda in Kenya, who sacrificed the spirit of the girl Ayuba. The X-Men (Firestar, Beast, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Storm) attacked, quickly discovering that Gawa was surrounded by a force field that could only be penetrated by his own weapons. After Meruda was defeated, Gawa easily fell as the mutants stabbed him with his own weapons.
Gawa is a powerful god with multiple mouths and spikes growing out of his body, long claws on his hands, multiple hands holding arrows and a tendrilly snake body. Gawa is surrounded by a magical force field which can only be penetrated by his own weapons
