History:

(Wild Western#31/4 (fb) - BTS) - When he was a much younger and inexperienced cowboy, Hal Newby was saved from death by an older colleague he had initially mocked. Newby learned from this and adopted a cowboy's code not to display others' faults.

(Wild Western#31/4) - Many years passed, now an aged cowboy who joined cattle roundups, Newby overheard others question employer Clem if Newby was too old to help. Later, they found the ranging cattle and Clem ordered Slim to watch out for Newby as the cattle were rounded up. Newby warned Slim about charging into a blind canyon but the younger cowboy ignored the advice and was confronted by a stampede. Slim intended to leave Newby behind but his horse fell. Newby courageously used gunshots to keep the stampede away from the unconscious Slim. Clem arrived and Newby covered for Slim's foolhardy behavior; Newby was fired by Clem and accepted his fate as he rode off. But Slim soon recovered and told what had really happened. Seeking to right a wrong, Slim rode after Newby who had meanwhile been caught in a fierce storm. A fallen tree pinned Newby to the muddy ground. Slim arrived and, defying the lightning, helped Newby to safety. The storm cleared and they faced clear skies ahead.

I like to think that the Newby character was fashioned after somebody real, as it's an unusual mix of "newbie" sound with someone old.
