History:
(ALF I#44 (fb) - BTS) - On planet Melmac, Prof.
Charles Xylophone prepared Nightcaller to join his mutant team of
adventurers, the X-Melmen.
(ALF I#44 (fb)) - Coincidentally, X-Melmen
member Häagen-Dazzler
left
the team to start her own group. Prof. Xylophone then introduced
Nightcaller to the team, but disgruntled Michigan Wolverine forced a
demonstration of powers and was knocked out by Nightcaller. Prof.
Xylophone sent the
team on a space mission, but while they were away, their home planet
exploded in a separate
incident, leaving
the X-Melmen as some of the very few surviving Melmacians. They
discovered the nefarious Magmeato and Emma DeFrost on Melmac's frozen
moon and their
plot to take
over Earth.
(ALF I#44) - X-Melmen Psych-Major and Dark
Kleenex went to Earth
and gained the cooperation of fellow Melmacian Gordon Shumway, changing
him into his secret superhero
identity of Fantastic Fur, before they rejoined the X-Melmen near
Magmeato's moon base. Magmeato caused their spaceship to
crash using a digestive tractor beam. The X-Melmen and Shumway escaped
and stormed the villains' castle, but DeFrost almost made the
X-Melmen drown by instantly defrosting all the moon's ice. The X-Melmen
regrouped
and Nightcaller, with Shumway's aid, stopped Magmeato from escaping.
However, DeFrost's actions had severely destabilized the moon and just
before it was about to explode,
Shumway fled in an escape pod while Nightcaller dialed an emergency
group transportation to an alternate dimension.
Later, back on Earth, Shumway played with his Melmutant action figures, confident the real Melmutants had survived.
Comments: Created by Michael Gallagher, Dave Manak, Marie Severin, Michael James & Ruth Leon.
Nightcaller received an entry in the Official Handbook of the Melmarvel Universe (entry at right) (!) (Handbook unpublished - it's a parody, folks).
I ASSume that a Melmutant is simply a mutant on the planet Melmac.
Further details on the Melmacian alien species (according to the ALF television show) can be found on a Melmac fansite. No problem!
Nightcaller is a clear ALF parody of Earth-616's Nightcrawler.
