unidentified
WAKANDAN male
Real Name: Unrevealed
Identity/Class: Human;
Wakandan citizen
Occupation: Unrevealed (see comments)
Group Membership: None
Affiliations: Black Panther (T'Challa)
Enemies: Kazibe, Tayete;
indirectly Erik Killmonger
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: "Wizened One" (from Tayete)
Base of Operations: Unrevealed;
formerly an unspecified location in Wakanda
First Appearance: Jungle Action II#6 (September, 1973)
Powers/Abilities: The man was loyal to the point of sacrificing his own life rather than reveal information to his king's enemies.
He was dying following apparent
torture and starvation in his sole appearance, so we don't know his
abilities in health or in his prime. Even at the time of his death, he
had pretty solid muscle definition.
Height: Unrevealed (perhaps 5'8"; possibly taller in youth/prime)
Weight: Unrevealed (perhaps 150 lbs; possibly heavier in youth/prime)
Eyes: Light brown
Hair: Gray-white (likely brown or black in youth)
History:
(Jungle Action II#6 (fb) - BTS) - While the Black Panther (T'Challa) was away from Wakanda, working alongside the Avengers, Killmonger began his efforts to usurp Wakandan rule.(Jungle Action II#6 (fb) - BTS) - As Killmonger plotted to slay the Black Panther (T'Challa) and take over Wakanda, his agents Tayete and Kazibe captured this unidentified older Wakandan man and imprisoned him in a wooden cage suspended from a tree for an unrevealed but extended period of time, demanding he answer Killmonger's questions: They wished to learn what orders were given from T'Challa's throne while he was away.
Despite starvation, dehydration,
and presumably torture, the man kept his faith in T'Challa and refused
to divulge any information to his captors.
(Jungle Action II#6) - As
Tayete demanded the answers they sought, the
Black Panther arrived and drove off Kazibe and Tayete.
As the Panther cut the rope suspending the man's cage, the man greeted him as "T'Challa, my chieftain."
As the Panther broke the cage, noticing he was freeing his loyal friend's body and spirit, the weakened man noted that while his body was indeed freed, his spirit sought its own flight.
Realizing the man was dying,
T'Challa asked him why they did this to him, and the man told him of
the terrible trouble that threatened Wakanda and how many had lost
faith.
Dying, the man told his king, "I knew they were wrong. You must believe...I never lost faith in you, T'Challa! I always...believed."
Comments: Created by Don McGregor, Rich Buckler, and Klaus Janson.
T'Challa called this man "loyal friend," presumably indicating that they were longtime friends and associates.
Further, as the man was abducted
to learn what royal orders were given from the throne, he was
presumably at least a tribal representative to the Wakandan government.
He appeared to have some sort of ornamental piercing on his chin.
Even though he was only in 14 panels over 4 pages, he seemed an important figure. I was going to give him a sub-profile under Tayete or Kazibe, but between the number of images and his being a friend of T'Challa...well, you can figure out the rest...
I like M'Gre as a name for this guy.
