History:
(Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror#13/3 (fb)) -
Ignoring multiple warnings, Comic Book Guy bought several items
specifically listed as "cursed props" off ebuy seller Lewis Vendredi (see
comments) on Friday the 13th, including DVDs that he discovered
would trap anyone else who touched them in the film or TV show on the
disc. Despite being aware of the curse, Comic Book Guy attempted to sell
the items on, and as a result trapped a number of his fellow
Springfieldians within the narratives, among them Groundskeeper Willie,
who became Wolverwillie on the X-Men DVD, facing off against Sabretooth
atop the Statue of Liberty.
(Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror#13/3) - Discovering that he could free the victims by smashing the props, Comic Book Guy released everyone, though they retained any physical changes they had underwent as part of the curse, leaving Willie a clawed superhero in black leather.
Comments: Created by Ian Boothby, Pia Guerra and Terry Austin.
Comic Book Guy's backroom contains multiple comic boxes labelled Spawn#1, suggesting he speculated heavily by buying lots of copies of that early Image comic.
Presumably protected by parody laws, the story places various Springfield characters in several copyrighted properties, many explicitly identified, including:
Additionally,
Bart reads the covers of comics such as
Yet despite being comfortable with all these clear uses of copyrighted characters and logos not belonging to Bongo Comics, the story shied away from using e-bay, instead utilizing the similarly named "ebuy," albeit with almost identical fonts and coloring for the fake site.
One much more subtle homage is the name
of the ebuy seller of the cursed items Comic Book Guy had purchased. Way
back in 1987, there was a now little-remembered TV show Friday the 13th:
The Series; unconnected to the horror movie series in anything but name,
its premise was that devil-worshipper Lewis Vendredi had sold various
cursed objects to unsuspecting victims which the series' protagonists
now had to retrieve.
