History:

(Doom 2099#6 (fb) - BTS / 2099 Unlimited#5/2 (fb)) <2097 AD> - When the fabric of Cyberspace was threatened by the "Domino Crash," netgliders Broken Haiku, Dot 33, Duke Stratosphere, Firelight, and Shiva Blue joined forces to prevent the total destruction of the 'net.

These netgliders became known as the Avalon Five.

Comments: Created by John Francis Moore and Kyle Baker.

Broken Haiku and Duke Stratosphere have their own profiles. Gabriel O'Hara will get a profile at some point, as he has an extensive history and is the brother of Spider-Man (Miguel O'Hara) of Earth-928's 2099 AD. However, I don't think we have any further information on Dot 33 or Shiva Blue.

Who is who (or is it "who is whom")?

While Duke Stratosphere is clearly the guy in front, the other four don't really look like their names. Broken Haiku and Firelight/Gabriel O'Hara have been shown elsewhere and don't really look like any of the other four in the image.

Maybe Firelight fits at the top right, because the character looks like it might be on fire...then again, the character in the top legt seems to glowing with some sort of energy...

The text box notes Duke as working with Shiva Blue, Dot 33, Broken Haiku, and Firelight, so you might assume that the order of the names matches the pictures...but is it left, top to bottom, and then right, top to bottom? Is it top, left to right, and then bottom, left to right? Is it clockwise? Any of those make Firelight the character in the bottom right...the character that looks like a Centaurian wearing Iron Man armor...perhaps the least Firelight-y of all the characters except Duke...so, not sure who is who (or is it "who is whom")?

It has been suggested that the character in the top left is a light blue, which may make him Shiva Blue; the fiery character in the top right may represent Firelight; the armored character in the bottom right maybe looks to have breasts, so that might be Broken Haiku (although who's to say that Dot 33 and/or Shiva Blue aren't females...or that a male character might have chosen a feminine archetype for whatever reason); and that would leave the character in the bottom left as Dot 33, by exclusion.
--I'll say that's all reasonable, but nonetheless purely speculative.

Some answers/discussion courtesy of creator John Francis Moore:

Thanks for asking about the Avalon Five.  Unfortunately, it's been a long time since I wrote the Duke Stratosphere story and I have forgotten what I intended to do with those characters.  (I did see a couple of Kyle's pages were sold on the Heritage Auction site recently.)  I wish I had the script for that story to reference but I imagine on a 1996 zip drive buried in closet somewhere.

In those days, part of what I was always trying to do in the 2099 books was to suggest events and personalities that had happened in the recent past of the 2099 timeline.  In creating my entry level cyberpunk/cyberspace reality, I tried to give characters names that didn't sound like contemporary superheroes and villains.

I don't remember who Dot 33 and Shiva Blue were supposed to be, other than names to fill out a cyberpunk super group fighting corporate/governmental authority.  I imagined the Avalon Five was an international group.  I name-checked the two characters from Spider-Man 2099 (Firelight) and X-Men 2099 (Broken Haiku) to create some inter-title continuity.

If I were trying to make story sense of the discrepancy between Kyle's characters in that panel and the characters that appeared in Spider-man 2099, I'd suggest the characters intentionally changed their avatars' appearance to create chaos and confuse their enemies.

You're right that Duke Stratosphere was named after the XTC psychedelic side project, the Dukes of Stratosphear. (My other musical nod in the 2099 books was Halloween Jack, named after "a real cool cat" in David Bowie's Diamond Dogs album.)

Thanks for taking the time to archive the 2099 universe.  It's nice to know that segment of the MCU hasn't been completely forgotten.

Best,

John
