History:
(Tales of Suspense I#29/4 (fb) - BTS) - Muggsy Bogar
committed various criminal acts, notably murder. This caught the
attention of law authorities. Wanted posters were put up and police
were on the lookout for him.
(Tales of Suspense I#29/4) - A
police squad car spotted the nefarious criminal, so a panicked Bogar
ran down a nearby dark alley to escape. He stumbled into a shadowy man
who knew his name and directed him to a barber shop at the end of the
alley, stating that Joe the Barber would hide him. Thinking it was the
(Mafia) mob helping him, he ran toward the shop and thought he had lost
his pursuers. Entering the barber shop, Joe the Barber told Bogar to
seat himself. While impressed with what he thought was a cleverly
disguised hideout, the tired criminal wanted to sleep. Joe the Barber
told him to be patient and finally turned around, throwing a smock over
the surprised criminal. The smock oozed down over Bogar's body, completely
covering him as his body seemed to sink into the chair until he disappeared, much to Joe's satisfaction.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee & Steve Ditko.
So who is Joe the Barber? The Devil come to collect a
nefarious soul? Or a type of angel casting Bogar for judgment? Maybe a
Fate come to claim him? Or was the shadowy man in the alley such an
entity and the barber enacting the sentence? A creepy tale rendered
beautifully by Ditko.

:
Muggsy Bogar has no known connections to:
Joe the Barber was a mysterious gray-haired character
who
operated in a barber shop at the end of a dark alley watched by a black
cat. The fugitive criminal Muggsy Bogar was directed there by a shadowy
man in the alley and Bogar thought the whole operation was run by the
mob to protect criminal fugitives. Joe wanted no reward,
claiming he received satisfaction. His back
to Bogar, Joe made preparations of some sort and told Bogar to be
patient when the tired criminal wanted to sleep in a bed. Joe then
threw a
smock over Bogar that completely covered him and oozed down
over him as he rapidly appeared to
sink into the chair until he disappeared. Knowing Bogar's crimes, Joe was somewhat amused that
he had made Bogar vanish.
